Carlos prepared a nice breakfast for the two days that we stayed. We were blessed to be there one night when Kilauea erupted. The manager texted us and we were among the first people there. Amazing experience. The only negative is that the wifi is limited so download anything you want to watch before you come or enjoy the view and read a book"

- "The location and atmosphere can't be beat. The area was very lush and gorgeous, and we could see the sunrise over the beach from our patio (and showers!). The cottages, each an individual standalone unit, had a wonderful rustic decor, with plenty of windows to enjoy the scenery. The establishment is not kidding about the lack of connectivity though: I couldn't connect to the complimentary wifi, and I had only emergency calls and no data through my Verizon provider. But if you want to go off the grid, this is the place! It was very quiet and peaceful at night, except for the coqui frogs. Some find their incessant chirp annoying, but I enjoyed it as part of the atmosphere. I wish I could have stayed longer, and I'll definitely be back if I have the opportunity."

- "My husband and I love staying here. The place is perfect for two, the location is one of our favorite places on the island. The outdoor shower is the greatest and feels wonderful. In the evenings we love sitting on the porch and watching the geckos. Diana is kind and helpful. Paradise for two." - "Loved this cabin on a farm at the foot of King Kong Mountain,1 mile from an uncrowded beach. We only saw locals at this beach. Location on the east side was superb for accessing the entire island if you have a car. Lush garden around property with coconut trees which we were allowed to eat from. Grounds are well kept. Loved sitting on the porch. Bed slept great and cabin was well equipped. Bedroom has window unit air conditioner which kept bedroom cool at night and in mornings. However, it couldn’t handle mid-day temperatures. A larger unit may be needed. But we we’re out and about during most days. I would definitely recommend this cute, comfortable cabin!"

- "This house is super comfortable, cozy, and clean with gorgeous decor. Rules were strict, which is understandable, but possibly could have been stated in a more welcoming way. I would definitely stay there again & recommend it to others." - "We stayed at Hale Sweet Hale for a week in February, 2024. The cabin feels secluded and you feel part of the tropical landscape whether you are relaxing on the back porch, in the hot tub, or inside. Granma's Cabin Kona coast
Cabin
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, USA

Official website. When Granma was 95, we had to move her in with us to take care of her. This left her little panabode cabin (900 square feet with a 500 square-foot wrap-around lanai) vacant. Lucky you . . . you can spend your Hawaiian vacation in this beautiful, quiet, and centrally located cabin which has just about everything.
There is a complete kitchen, a bath with tub and shower, a washer/dryer, a living/dining room, and a cable TV . There is also a big gas barbecue, and birds for a morning alarm clock. We even left all the little nick knacks in place to make this is truly a 'home-away-from-home'.
The home is backed by a herb farm and macadamia nut orchard. It is surrounded by mac nuts, lychee, and mango, avocado, and citrus trees. If anything is in season during your stay, you are welcome to enjoy it.
The big island of Hawaii is almost 200 miles around.

As you tour the island and along the Kona Coast you can see cattle ranches, rain forests, lava fields, volcanoes, snowcapped mountains in the winter, beaches, and spectacular valleys and waterfalls.
Our cabin is located in one of the most temperate places on earth. We have over 300 excellent days a year. All of our prior guests have raved about their stay, and have vowed to come back. The Big Island has something for everyone.

Guest Reviews:

- "This is the most perfect place to stay in Volcano. It is remote, set within the gorgeous lush rainforest, yet if you have a car you can see everthing you would want to see. VERY comfortable and private, stocked with housewares, blankets, towels, and shower supplies, games, instructions and suggestions. The host is available and very helpful. I would suggest buying distilled water because all the island's water supply is rainwater. There is a water filter pitcher available if you are okay with the rainwater. The place is truly a wonderful home away from home. And the Big Island is a magical land, deeply spiritual and steeped in history and tradition. There is something for everyone. Aloha!"

'We Loved This Romantic Getaway for Two !' - Testimonial.
Cabin
Captain Cook, Hawaii, USA

This rustic wooden mountain cabin is situated next to a forest, in a secluded spot away from the main house, on a 3.5 acre farm. At an elevation of 2,100 feet, it avoids the summer heat at sea level ('Cool and peaceful..' - Teri), yet is close to Kealakekua Bay (5 miles), kayaking, horse-riding, the Captain Cook Monument, Place of Refuge, and wonderful snorkeling. Ten minutes south is a small shopping center, with supermarket, Chinese restaurant, sandwich shop, bagel shop, pizza restaurant, etc. Three miles north is Kainaliu Town, with theater/cinema, Blue Ginger Gallery, clothing stores and other quaint places. One of the finest restaurants in West Hawaii (Keei Café) is less than 15 minutes away, and there are other lovely breakfast, lunch, dinner places and coffee shops nearby. From the cabin, a short walk across the property and along private paths through coffee fields leads you down a road that takes you through natural Hawaiian flora.

The 760 square feet cabin consists of a living-room, sleeping loft, bathroom, and well-equipped Hawaiian-style lanai kitchen with screens that look into the forest ('The forest is full of birdsong' - Claudia & Chan). A redwood deck is situated under the kukui and macadamia nut trees, and has a Polynesian gazebo. A charcoal barbecue ('An evening barbeque and wine on the deck - perfect' - Barbara & John) stands nearby. The cabin itself is a single wall structure built from exterior plywood. It does not have sheet rock and, like other Hawaiian-built cabins and coffee shacks, the plywood constitutes the inner and outer walls. Windows are aluminum and glass. The kitchen windows are wood, glass and screen, allowing for excellent ventilation.

The farm has three beloved and gentle dogs, three cats, sheep, and chickens. The farm critters are kept in an area at the upper south end of the farm, and the cabin is at the lower north end, some distance from them.

Guests will find fresh farm eggs, homemade bread, a fruit basket, Kona coffee, and other goodies to get them started.

Also worth noting - Jeffrey is an enthusiastic table tennis player. There are four clubs on the Big Island so if you play, bring your equipment!

Generally our guests' feedback is that the cabin is a comfortable place to hang out, read, watch movies and just unwind, or a cool base to return to after swimming, snorkeling and exploring the warmer locations elsewhere.

The proximity of the cabin to the forest means that there are a variety of forest sounds that can be heard - lots of birds in the morning, and tree frogs at night (especially in the wet summer months). As in any woodland setting, nature makes itself known!

- "We had a few days on the big island and wanted to split our time between the Kona area and the Hilo area. This place was PERFECT for us as we wanted to avoid the hustle and bustle of Kona but be close enough to do all the snorkeling we could pack in and hit as many different places as we could. We loved the location of the cabin as it suited our needs and wants to a T. It was easy to get where we wanted to go and do all the things we had planned. Jeffrey and Heide were amazing hosts and the cabin is very lovely. The yard is a dream! A truly amazing gem of a place to stay. Well appointed with everything you could need or want. The fresh bread, fruit and amazing passionfruit jelly were such lovely touches. Cute friendly dogs too! 100% recommend this place if you are looking to stay somewhere a bit remote but accessible to the area."

River View Rainforest Tiny Cabin with Kitchenette (No Cleaning Fee)
Cabin
Pepeekeo, Hawaii, USA

This tiny house offers a private bathroom and a well equipped private kitchenette on a screened-in porch. You will also have access to our shared waterfall swimming area.

This cabin is off-the-grid. Being off-the-grid means that we get all of our electricity from the sun and all of our water is collected from the rain. We are not connected to the island's grid power system. Our solar panels charge a large bank of deep cycle batteries all day in order for us to have power around the clock. Guests are asked not to use any appliances that generate heat from electricity (such as toasters, hair dryers, curling irons, etc...) as they consume too much energy for an off-grid power system.

Regulatory Note: This is a hosted rental and is not subject to Hawaii County Bill 108.

Guest Reviews:

- "Exactly as described! Waterfall just 1 min walk away from cabin. Little kitchen. Private driveway. Little tricky to find even with google map direction, but once you get here, it’s worth it!" - "I wish more people could find this place and stay here for couple nights, off grid and private natural pool." - "We truly felt like we were in paradise. Pictures don’t show the true beauty of the plants and trees and water. The sounds were incredible too. We had just came from Waikiki and it was so nice to be with nature - the true original Hawaii."

Romantic Cabin on a gated aquaponics farm centrally located for exploring.

The cabin is a very satisfying living space. High ceiling with loft bedroom high end Serta queen sized bed. A fully functional kitchen is also included. It's a very romantic and cozy space especially for couples. You get acces anywhere in the 2 acre property.

Come see it before is stops! It's truly an incredible sight. A must see!! On a side note Keaau is a very safe place to be for safe air.

Great location for all that east Hawaii has to offer and your host Jonas will make sure you have all the information and toys you need to explore eg. snorkel gear boogie boards!

Currently the county of Hawaii is setting up safe viewing areas of the volcano and lava flows. Hookele cabin is located 15 miles from the volcano and is upwind so air quality is fresh and clean. Come see a once in a lifetime experience of a close look at an active volcano.

Guest Reviews:

- "Very comfortable space with all you could need. Wonderfully accommodating host. Conveniently located." - "Jonas is a great host. He tells a lot of usuful information you need for stay at big island." - "Much need time away from the busyness of LA. We have family here on Big Island and this spot was right up the street! We’ll definitely be back many more times! Thanks Jonas Aloha for now :)" - "A+" - "My wife and I recently stayed here from 9/23-9/27 as part of a big anniversary trip. First time out of the lower 48 since COVID and we wanted to stay on both sides of the island (it is a big island) and we wanted a real much needed getaway - and we got exactly what we were hoping for. It's a beautiful little cabin on a gated property a little off 130 that makes you feel like you're basically alone in a little slice of paradise. The owner/host next to there Jonas is the nicest guy ever and helped us feel at home. He has lots of solar stuff set up, cool lights around the property, very self sustaining including the water (he provides big jugs of water for drinking, tap is safe to cook with and brush teeth etc). There's hot water, but take quick showers. During our stay he gave us a really awesome locals driving tour of a lot of the aftermath of the 2018 lava flows as well as some interesting history and some other cool spots we surely wouldn't have seen on our own. We definitely recommend asking him about it. The cabin was maybe a half hour from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park which is worthy of at least a few days if you like to hike. Hilo is very close, and we easily explored the NE coast as far as Laupahoehoe Point (don't miss the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden). It is centrally located to really get to see a really cool area in the state that we thought was so exciting and beautiful. The cabin is small just like the pictures show but great for couples for sure. The loft upstairs with the bed is where the AC is located and we were very happy with how comfortable it kept us upstairs and down too, and we like it cool. The ladder up to the loft is pretty easy, we went up and down once and were fine. Internet was top notch, which we tried not to use too much (I mean you're in Hawaii) but when we were being lazy and eating box Mac n Cheese a few times after a big day of hiking was nice. Speaking of kitchen, it's basic but we definitely got by fine. There's a microwave, a dual burner, a convection oven, and a coffee maker. There was something else under the microwave that I forgot what it was kinda looked like an air fryer type thing but not sure so don't hold me to that. Nice fridge and freezer. In short, we loved it, and will hopefully be back again before too long. I say this in a positive way, as much as we loved it this place also might not be for everyone. But if it's for you, you're going to love it. Thank you so much Jonas!!"

- "This is where i will go when i run away from home. It feels rustic with all its comforts and a waterfall. I sat for 3 days on the porch never tiring of the botanical garden right in front of me. The owners are a delight and care about every detail. We never heard anyone's voice the entire stay and could cocoon ourselves in beauty and peace. We read a lot, watched the stars, sipped coffee on our private deck in early morning light and napped on two comfy couches in the cabin in the afternoons. The weather was 75 degrees with trade wind breezes. So many perfect places to sit overlooking the river as i wandered through the gardens. The Frog Pond cabin is my new home away from home. Thank you Darin and Katerina, you are the best!"

We are a 501c3 nonprofit dog rescue so there are various dogs/puppies here at any given time. We love when our guests take dogs on field trips and/or walks as well! =)

Rainforest massages are available starting at $100 for the hour.

We are about about a 30 minute drive from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and a lovely central location to many other places on the island. Keep in mind, we are a BIG island so more driving is required here than the other islands.

We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. All of our cabins are equipped with propane heaters for comfort. Winters are also rainy season so if traveling to the Big Island in the winter, we suggest some light layers for warmth, a raincoat and rain boots.

Guest Reviews:

- "Truly different experience especially for people who come from a city. We came home early every day so we can shower in the “jungle” watching the rain and hearing frogs. The apartment has everything you need for a short or long stay. The yard is beautiful with flowers and decorations. It definitely will make you feel like living in a rainforest. Dawn is very friendly. We had great conversation every night in the kitchen. (We seem to always have the same dinner time). Her cats and dogs are super cute. She even gave us fresh eggs from her chickens every morning!"

Plumeria Room on a Lush Farm on Maui's North Shore
Cabin
Haiku, Hawaii, USA

A cozy room offering a king-size bed and a queen size bed. Guests can enjoy a small refrigerator, microwave, electric kettle, coffee pot, desk, private bathroom with shower, large closet, and a small outdoor sitting area. As guests of Hale Akua Garden Farm & Eco-Retreat Center, we offer access to our sixty-foot swimming pool, large hot tub looking over the ocean, infrared sauna, shared retreat-kitchen facilities, and to purchase our organic farm's produce and eggs.

Our eco-retreat center is situated in the lush tropical rainforest of north shore Maui in Haiku, making our property the perfect location for growing organic fruits and vegetables. The land is bathed in ocean trade winds and negative ions from the 150-foot waterfall just below us. We offer an alternative Maui experience in comparison to the leeward side resorts and are the perfect mid-point stay for a road to Hana journey.

The center's buildings are situated along the cliffside of a seven-acre property. The Plumeria room is on the ground floor of the Ohana House, just a short walk to the shared: pool, hot tub, sauna, and kitchen.

Hale Akua is a magical and idyllic place created and designed to provide a natural and supportive environment for groups, couples, families, and individuals to relax, renew, and restore well-being.

Guests have access to the eco-retreat facilities which include the large saltwater pool, hot tub overlooking the ocean, kitchen, and dining area. Guests can also get guidance on what is great to visit by looking through our guidebook in their room or asking for help at the office.

Office is open Mon - Sun from 9am - 5pm. We also provide an after-hours phone if you need anything outside these hours. Upon your booking, we provide you with a Welcome Booklet that includes local recommendations and anything else you may be wondering about before and during your stay.

Note: Please keep in mind, our center is a rustic compound in the middle of the jungle. We do have de-humidifiers and air purifiers in every room. We are centered in a tropical rainforest with many weird and wonderful insect species. We only use natural pesticides and cleaning chemicals on the property. As a result, we occasionally have more animal visitors. These may include geckos, ants, flying cockroaches, centipedes, cane spiders, and mice. We are in their natural habitat, so we will not be able to refund any portion of your stay for these house guests.

The price listed includes cleaning fees and extra coffee, tea, and cream if needed in the room.

The solar electric system at Hale Akua currently consists of 200 solar panels, 12 inverters, and 24 solar batteries. Our founder Lori Grace has invested in this system to prevent unnecessary contributions to climate change. This solar electric system will add another two days of electricity, provided there has been an adequate amount of sunlight charge before an electrical outage. We also have 10 Eco-Flow batteries (3kw electricity per room) which can add two to three days of electricity if needed. Learning to live on limited electricity is a wonderful and necessary education for our current climate situation. We would like for all our guests to learn to work together with our staff in these situations.
Large hotels here on Maui that experience an electrical failure do not provide backup power, nor do they offer refunds. As we do not feel responsible for Hawaiian Electric’s failures, there will be an opportunity for education rather than a refund if we have an outage, and our staff will assist you the best they can.

- "Perfect place to escape for a while." - "We loved staying in Huelo...we were looking for peace and tranquility so that we could reconnect as a family. It was the perfect setting for us! We loved the pool, hot tub, kitchen facilities and there was even a surprise wellness, fundraising day filled with yoga, massage, amazing food & more... what a treat! Wonderful staff were helpful and welcoming. Mahalo nui loa to all!" - "Read the welcome manual in your room lol but this was the most beautiful stay with a great host Andras! I’m so happy I found this at the last minute and got to wake up everyday in this oasis. The pool at night is a MUST as well as visiting with the farm animals. The only thing that had me weary was the beautiful array of spiders and their many cool webs all over the property :) be careful when going for a walk. It’s just 25 mins from Paia where you’ll find all you need. I wish I could stay again when I come back in April but it’s just so great it’s all booked up! Whenever you get the chance, snatch up any room available!"

- "Totally unique off grid experience smack in the middle of the jungle. Think tiny house meets summer camp! Misty, the property host, gave an excellent introduction to the property and amenities. Her knowledge of flora and fauna enhanced our experience. Don’t worry about trading comfort for rural retreat. Our bedroom cabin was super clean, warm, appointed with quality linens and towels, and worked well for the four of us. This is a must do experience you won’t stop thinking about."

KIRPAL MEDITATION AND ECOLOGICAL CENTER (KMEC)

This is a cozy, cute, and private ground level walk-in cabin surrounded with flowers and plants to sweeten the view. Once inside, this intimate sanctuary gives you all the tranquility you need to find peace within yourself. It is close to the community kitchen and bathrooms and has a very comfortable double mattress.

The shared kitchen and two fully equipped, clean, and modern bathrooms, also with jungle view, are about 20 feet away.

Our spacious and open 11 acre property is surrounded by a buffer of jungle and features 100 trees with 30 or so kinds of tropical fruit. You're welcome to enjoy the freshest fruit possible whenever they're ripe!

Enjoy a walk half a mile away to the newest formed beach in the world Isaac Kepo'okalani Hale Park. You will walk down Pohoiki road which is full of huge old mango trees that make for a stunning stroll.

Shopping, a natural foods market, and delicious restaurants are 30 minutes away in Pahoa town. Several large Farmer Markets operate on the weekends too.

We have a 1000 square foot Yoga Hale for small groups and events with a phenomenal view of the Pacific. We have a resident yoga teacher that hosts yoga classes for guests daily at 8 am for $12.

Our teak Meditation Pavilion was made in Bali and is, to us, a very holy and special place for prayer and reflection. We don't preach, or otherwise "reach out"...., it's simply there if you would like some peace and tranquility - which is, as most people tell us, is our main product. :-)

Check-in time is 3 pm or after, and we ask that you please arrive no later than 9 pm to ensure someone is awake and available to show you to your cabin. Late check-ins can be arranged, but you have to let us know ahead of time. Late fee for late check in. Keep us informed in your route to us.

The cost contained herein is all inclusive covering the required Hawaii Hotel Room Tax and the Hawaii General Excise Tax (14.25%).

Check out our reviews on AirBNB! They speak for themselves. KMEC is the best value around for places under $100.

Guest access
Guests have full access to all of the community spaces including: community kitchen with fridge and cooking space, dining gazebo, 3 full bathrooms on property, 1 half bathroom by yoga hale, meditation pavilion open 24 hours, yoga hale, and always welcome to walk throughout the 11 acre organic fruit orchard.

Other things to note
All of our cabins (unlike a hotel) are open to the elements. They are screened in to protect from pesky mosquitoes and bugs, however the Hawaiian jungle is full of geckos and screens don’t keep them out. They are harmless and just enjoy being around humans, and especially love eating sweet treats if you leave any food out. Please be aware that you may see a few during your stay, but there won’t be a large number of geckos. In case of gecko droppings we do put a painting drop cloth over the bed to maintain cleanliness of bedding and towels until your arrival. These are removed to be washed on a regular basis. This is typically placed under the bed during your stay, in case you choose to cover the bed while you are out during the day.

Fern Forest Modern Cabin
Cabin
Island of Hawai'i

Newly completed in Jan. 2023! Our cabin is perfect for ventures into Volcanoes National Park, and sits on a peaceful private 3 acre property that’s perfect for couples. You’ll love the semi-outdoor shower with screens to keep out any bugs or critters, and the patio kitchenette is a great place to relax and enjoy brunch, a cocktail, or a brunch cocktail! California King bed with Casper mattress, luxury bedding, fast wi-fi, covered parking, and lots of fun custom design touches!

The space
Our off-grid cabin was lovingly custom remodeled and expanded between 2021-2023. It’s a one bedroom with a full bathroom, and a screened lanai featuring a kitchenette. The bedroom has a Cal King Casper Mattress, couch, 55 inch Roku TV, bladeless ceiling fan, and garment rack. Our bathroom area has a dedicated water closet, separate vanity, and a custom “semi-outdoor” shower. The shower is fully enclosed with screens to keep unwanted bugs away while you shower, and a translucent roof to allow natural light in. There is an attached carport that can accommodate two vehicles, and has a covered walkway from carport to cabin. We have prided ourselves on putting a lot of hard work into custom touches on the cabin, and you’ll find a variety of local hardwoods, reclaimed lumber, and custom woodwork throughout!

The 3 acre property itself is fenced and gated along the road, and is in a well preserved native Ohia forest with many tropical palms and anthuriums, citrus trees, and wild guava and ginger. The forested area back of the property is not fenced, and you may notice a wild pig or two pass through during your stay. If you notice an area of grass that has been dug up mysteriously, the pigs are the culprit! The cabin is on the front half of the property, the back half is heavily forested and not really accessible.

Be aware that Fern Forest is at approx 2400 ft elevation and does get chilly at night at times- down into the 50s. We have a very thick comforter on the bed as well as a backup blanket. It stays fairly warm in the bedroom but if you’re concerned about being cold you might want to bring a sweatshirt and some warm pajamas for bedtime.

Our off grid setup does include very fast wi-fi! We have 300 mb/sec Hawaiian Telcom Fiber internet. Our power comes from a large solar array on the carport with a battery bank that is more than sufficient for our one bedroom cabin, and the power is seamless- you won’t need to switch anything on or off when the sun goes down. We have normal 110v outlets all around and you would never even know you were off-grid if you hadn’t read this! All our water is rain collected by our cistern system, which is then two stage particle filtered and run through a UV light filter to neutralize any potential bacteria and make the water drinkable.

Our kitchenette features an automatic burr grinder for coffee, countertop convection toaster oven, electric kettle, modular plug-in 2 burner cooktop, and mini fridge with separate freezer compartment. We keep a basic set of bartending supplies, pots and pans, kitchen utensils, dish towels, cutting boards, bowls, plates, cups etc. for our guests use. We also supply basics like salt, pepper and olive oil. It’s a great space for cooking breakfast, simple meals, and making tasty cocktails!

Restoring/remodeling this cabin has been a major labor of love for my husband and I the past few years. It’s our privilege to share it with you! We have really done our absolute best to consider every detail and provide a great guest experience, so if you have any concerns at all, we encourage you to please reach out to us!!

Guest access
The garden around the cabin as well as the cabin itself are your private space to enjoy! If it has been raining, the garden will likely be muddy so please be advised. The front door has a coded lock, and you’ll be provided the code prior to check-in. The property is gated, and you will have access to the lock code, so you are welcome to lock yourselves in if you choose. Nobody else will be coming on property during your stay unless it has been pre-arranged with you by us (your hosts). The rear of the property also has a large cleared area for potential future home construction but we do ask that guests refrain from exploring it as there is an uncovered pit for future wastewater processing that could be potentially hazardous if stepped into.

Other things to note
Be aware that Fern Forest is a residential neighborhood. Please be respectful with regard to excessive noise.

Listen to the peaceful sounds of the Waiulili Stream and our waterfall running through the property and then over a 650' cliff. Waipio Lookout is 1/2 mile away. Ocean and waterfall views abound. Enjoy the peace and privacy of your own suite complete with private outdoor soak tubs.
