Just a few things that would be better is if screens/windows were repaired or replaced so they can be opened to allow airflow and less use of a/c. Especially in the upstairs bathroom. We couldn’t figure out where the outside stairs light was, which would have been helpful as it was quite dark when getting back at night. Felt a little sheepish since there was a camera pointing right at us whenever outside the front door, which someone must have visual access to given the panel on interior wall. Also, fumigation every so often would definitely help with the “critter” issue. I was raised in Hilo with much of my family still there so didn’t have an issue with removing our trash from premises which is not something I’ve had to do in other vacation rentals I’ve stayed in. Usually there is clearly somewhere on site to dump it. Overall, good for a large group but not for those who are squeemish with insect or reptile type creatures or are used to “finer” lodgings. "

Lazy Lehua Cottage was constructed in 2004 with respect for the aina (land). Trees were hand-cut and the property was cleared in a minimally invasive manner. Trees removed from the site were recycled into the cottage’s posts and railings to blend in with the rainforest. Select cottage furniture was hand crafted— the coffee table, bar top, and bedroom headboard were all made with local, exotic, and native woods. The cottage has been maintained with immaculate and loving attention and we know you will feel its special mana when you are here.

Guests rave about the 'SWEEPING, UNSPOILED, TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY VIEW' in every direction! The sun and moon rise over the ocean as you watch the wonders unfold from your comfy rocking chair OR swinging bed on the lanai. Birdsong is the beautiful sound track on this private farm located at the end of a dead end country road. Relax as you walk through the orchards and please, sample the fruit...that's when it is best!
The COTTAGE is bright, clean, and furnished with all you will need. The 'BAMBOO SLEEPING CHAMBER' offers a KING size 'sleep number' bed with dual controls for firmness. A FULL size futon is inside, and outside on the LANAI is the QUEEN size 'HANGING BED'. (This bed has become a favorite with our guests, who sleep, nap, read and talk while swaying in the breeze, taking in the beauty.) Walk-in shower and pedestal sink in the cottage bath. Laundry facilities, with all supplies, are available for our guests and just steps away from the cottage.
A huge AVOCADO tree hugs the patio next to the lanai. We have named her, MS. CADDO. You may taste her fruits in season and almost always there will be a stalk of 'apple' bananas hanging from her branches. Bring some groceries and you are ready to settle in.

Once used to house managers from the sugar cane plantation days, this home, named Hale Ulu Lulu, underwent a major rebuilding (completed in early 2020 and constantly maintained) and is now completely restored with attention to historic detail, while providing every modern convenience. - "Great!" - "We spent two weeks in Hawai’i, 4 different locations on two islands. Our stay in Puako was easily the best part. First, David is an absolutely amazing host. The grounds are filled with all sorts of plant life that my daughter enjoyed hearing David talk her through. We used the plants several times to accompany our meals. The property itself is great. Super clean, full amenities, comfortable beds and the outdoor shower is a great touch. Access to a nice beach for sunset is less than a 2 minute walk. As for the location, it always comes down to a personal preference but Puako is in a great location for us. The proximity to small towns and a couple resort areas give enough options for dinner, shopping and exploring. The towns were fun to take in a little more of the typical Hawai’i living. Waimea was especially fun for us. You have to do the farmers markets on Saturday morning. There are also a couple touring companies that launch their activities out of the boat ramp 5 minutes down the road. Hapuna beach is the best beach we went to in Big Island and only 10 min down the road too. This area is a nice escape from the hustle of the downtown Kona area but close enough for the couple times we wanted/needed to go there. Oh yeah, a random collection of footrucks setup at the corner of Puako Beach Rd and the Highway, including some insanely delicious malasada’s. We will be back here with David for sure!"

A large jacaranda and two avocado trees shade the wide-open lawn. At an elevation of around 3,000 feet, guests welcome the day as the sun rises over Haleakala and sets in the ocean or behind Mauna Kahalawai (West Maui Mountains). Guests might even see the green flash when it sets in the ocean.

It is private from the main house the landscaping keeps you from seeing the house when sitting on the back lanai where the BBQ and sitting area is located. There is one off the road parking stall for quests to use. There is also a kids play house with swings for the quests to use if they like. - "This was a fantastic little spot to relax from daily activities! My wife and I really enjoyed how "far away" from town this rental is. It's not a long drive to town, but really feels like it is so much further away as it is really quiet. (and about 10-15 degrees cooler than the beach below made for very nice for sleeping in the middle of July) The grounds are beautifully taken care of and we loved enjoying our breakfast on the lanai each morning. Gale seems to have thought of everything. From the fresh fruit and scrumptious banana bread to the beach chairs and umbrella for outings, we really didn't need anything but the usual groceries. :-) It was a wonderful stay and we will be back, I'm sure!"

The lanai is a great place to sit and enjoy a morning cup of coffee while watching the boats go out from the harbor. It is on a beautiful fenced property with coffee, citrus, and avocado trees along with many native Hawaiian plants and trees.

Enjoy a slice of South Kona paradise with room for the whole family! This 960 sqft cottage is at the end of a private road and is located on a 10 acre regenerative coffee and cacao farm at a cool 1400' elevation. From the large screened porch, enjoy stunning sunsets and expansive coastline views, including Kealakekua Bay and the surf break at Ke'ei. Rolling green lawns and fruit trees surround the cottage, and birdsong fills the morning air from the nearby native forest. Aloha!

The space
The cottage has a large, open-plan living, kitchen, and dining area. The main bedroom has two closets with ample hanging space, as well as a large dresser. The second bedroom is surrounded by tree ferns and has windows lining the room, providing gentle air flow and green views. All of the windows open and are screened to the outside, and each has privacy blinds. The newly renovated bathroom has a large storage closet, a shower/bathtub combo with a rain-shower head, and a mirrored medicine cabinet.

The front, screened porch (called a lanai) has plush seating to enjoy the view. A round dining table that seats four gives you the option to eat outside and enjoy our comfortable climate and beautiful sunsets. The kitchen door leads to a covered, unscreened back patio with bistro table and chairs, where you can enjoy a farm-fresh coffee in the morning sun.

The newly renovated kitchen is equipped with everything you need to make a home-cooked meal, including a large oven and full stove top; pots, pans, and mixing bowls; knives and cutting boards; and appliances including a microwave oven, toaster, drip coffee machine, and water kettle.

The cottage has no air conditioning, but fortunately our elevation doesn't require it! Our nighttime temperatures are in the 50s and 60s (winter/summer), and 4 ceiling fans throughout the space keep you feeling cool and breezy.

The farm is minutes from excellent local restaurants and a 5-minute drive from the town of Captain Cook, with a lovely local grocery store and Sunday farmers' market. The Keauhou Shopping Center is 15 minutes north. We are 15-20 minutes from the ocean, including some of the best snorkeling spots on the Kona coast, like Two Step and Ho'okena Beach.

The parking area for the cottage has room for two vehicles. Our guests can explore the land around the cottage, including the rolling front lawn and lower coffee and cacao fields. The lanai also opens onto a smaller lawn bordered by ornamental trees and flowers, shared with the neighboring guest house.

There are four beach chairs, one umbrella, two boogie boards, one soft top longboard, one epoxy fish surfboard, and various sets of snorkeling equipment available for your use.

Other things to note
The cottage is conveniently located just 10-15 minutes south of the restaurants and grocery store in Captain Cook, and Kailua-Kona proper is just a half hour north! We are also a beautiful 15 min drive from the coast, including Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historic Park (the City of Refuge) and Kealakekua Bay. The closest shoreline access happens to be the famous snorkel spot Two Step! We have two sets of snorkel gear available for guest use, as well as beach towels.

James Cottage is located on Puakea Ranch in Hawi, HI. The cottage is light and airy with a King Size Bed and a Private Hot Tub. Your bath room is a private detached original Japanese "furo" bath house we have converted into a more modern day shower and bathroom. You do need to take 5 steps outside into your courtyard, to access your private bath house from your cottage.
