Chose Camden area so we had easy access to Arcadia National Park ( two hours to the north) and easy day trip to Boothbay area( two hours to the south) and there is plenty to do in Camden or take a trip over to Portland. " - "Thanks so much for this space - we all loved staying here for CIFF and this was a wonderful home base for the duration of the film festival. I only wish we'd added on a day just to soak up the lovely property & outdoor space; the back deck would have been perfect for a family style meal. It was so lovely that we were even able to walk to and from downtown Camden for the different venues. Hope to stay again in the future! "

Area Amenities:
The Tenants Harbor General Store, is open daily, specializing in morning coffee and pastries, corn, blueberries, native lobsters, fresh-cut meats, firewood, and all grocery supplies. It is only a 10-minute walk, or bring your bike for riding the winding roads for the scenic ocean and island views. This is a pleasantly old and proud Maine community with its own library, school, and fire/rescue department. Knox County Sheriff's Office provides policing services. One-third of all Maine lobsters come from this county, named for General Henry Knox, George Washington's chief artillery officer in the Revolutionary War of 1776. You can learn about him on the peninsula, as well as enjoy programs offered all seasons at Montpelier, the Knox Mansion Museum, located just another few minutes in the nearby coastal town of Thomaston.
Heading another 10 minutes down the St. George peninsula is Port Clyde, another fishing village. You will enjoy beautiful ocean views while enjoying an incredible meal on the wharf and delicious ice cream for dessert from the local ice cream shop. In the heart of Port Clyde, you will find adventure waiting for you. Whether it's visiting a local art gallery, enjoying a day on the ocean with the Wyeth by Water Lobster Boat tours, or the Monhegan Island ferry adventures to see Maine seabirds, including puffins and American bald eagles, spending the day at the local Drift-Inn beach or a picnic at Marshall Point Lighthouse; St. George has something for everyone.
Here are some things you should know about visiting Maine:
Cell phones: Although coverage is getting better, there are some places where cell phones don't have good reception. Chances are you will have service, but just in case, make sure you leave the number of the house you are renting with those who may need to get in touch with you. Coverage with AT&T can be spotty in many areas of Maine.
Weather: If you have heard it once, you've heard it a hundred times: if you don't like the weather in New England, wait a minute. It can be hot in Rockland and cool in Port Clyde so make sure to pack a variety of clothes — from a bathing suit for hot days to a sweater for cool evenings. Check out the current local weather at www.weather.com.
Bugs: A lot of people ask us if we have mosquitoes...we sure do. But they aren't huge and they don't ruin a vacation. Bring some repellent, or pick some up at the local general stores and you will be fine; usually, you won't even notice them.
Dogs: We love dogs around here, but each town has its own rules about pets. Make sure to look for signs stating if dogs are allowed and always have them on a leash. If they leave behind anything, please pick it up, it's not a fun surprise when you are exploring the beautiful shoreline. You can also be fined for not picking up after your four-legged friend.
Unwanted animals: You probably have them too, but raccoons and skunks can make you regret last night's lobster dinner. No one wants to pick up old, smelly shells that have been cast out onto the lawn by these cute, but curious and disastrously messy, little guys. So please don't put off placing the trash in the secure trashcans provided.
Water: Moonlight Cottage is not on public water supply. It has a well, with a water filtration system, and is tested regularly once a year.
Moonlight Cottage is a Saturday to Saturday rental year-round! This home comfortably sleeps 4 people/ max 2 adults.
- "Property was sparkling clean and a very welcoming retreat. It was delightful to watch the boats coming and going, beautiful sunrises and moonrises over the harbor. Lovely quiet spot for rest and relaxation." - "The location was nearly perfect and the cabin was nicely furnished and included all that was needed for a wonderful vacation. Thank you" - "This is a small but well furnished cottage in a beautiful setting right on the water. Our only complaint was strangely dim lighting in the kitchen. Otherwise wonderful."

- "This is our 2nd stay at the Bunkhouse. The perfect location and perfect hosts. The weather wasn’t that favorable but it didn’t matter. We still enjoyed what the area offered. Laura suggested going to the Botanical Garden in which we did. Well worth it. The highlight of our stay was Laura’s dog, Gus. He started our day with a visit in the morning and ended our day with a visit at night. Such a bonus! Looking forward to another stay at the Bunkhouse."

We built this cottage with modern comforts so that our friends can come and enjoy the quiet of Webb Cove. Even your dog will be happy here!
- "This was our 3rd visit to Carolyn and David's cottage. As soon as we turned onto W. Spruce Harbor Rd we could feel life's stresses melt away. This visit was as wonderful as our previous stays, thanks to Carolyn and David's hospitality. We wanted for nothing - except maybe some sunshine but even with the rainy, foggy days we made the most of it - visiting places we were saving for rainy days that hadn't come in the past. On the one day of sun we accomplished a long held bucket list item - kayaking to Isle au Haut! The islands in between are magical - like we imagine the Caribbean to be like. Thank you Carolyn, David, and sweet Daisy for having us back. We look forward to returning next year!"

This sunny Cozy home-like cottage is set in a quiet neighborhood in Camden, Maine.
Enter through the kitchen, and nostalgia will overtake as you step into the 1950's; from the table and chairs to the red refrigerator; A fully stocked retro kitchen has all the amenities you need to make great meals, or if you prefer take-out, you'll thoroughly enjoy sitting at 'grandma's table' with formica top and chrome base.
Truly one of a kind.
Also an option is to have your morning coffee (local blueberry coffee perhaps?) and pastry on the patio deck with 1950's red chairs. The patio umbrella is ready to put up if you need a little shade.
The spacious living room boasts a leather couch, a comfy side chair and... yes, a retro cloth chair to balance it out as you watch the Big Screen TV; Are you working and need to do some business or keep up with whats going on at home? High Speed Wi-Fi and long distance phone service is available (or the retro, 'plugged in the wall' phone!)
The master bedroom includes a Queen size bed with reading lamp and nightstand, antique dresser with mirror. Plush pillow-top mattress with fluffy down comforters for cool summer nights. A closet complete with hangers and ironing board. Storage closet to the side for suitcase storage.
The second bedroom has a new double bed. Dresser, mirror and closet with extra bedding.

Now it's time to explore Camden! Camden Cottage is located halfway between Portland and Bar Harbor, and is the ideal spot to stay and visit all points in Maine.
If Newspapers are outdated in your life, grab your i-pad, computer or phone and enjoy the hi speed Wi-Fi,. With the amenities at this cute cottage (Retro!!!) it might be tempting to put in a few hours of work; but try to squash the temptation to work while on vacation- instead head on out for a short walk to the Camden harbor and enjoy breakfast at the Camden Deli overlooking the waterfall from Lake Megunticook. Indeed, did you know the river runs right under part of the town of Camden? It's a gorgeous sight, especially from Main St. as you peruse the many unique shops- do stop to take a look at the flowers, the river- and perhaps a cup of coffee at Boynton McKay's, a former Apothecary shop.
Where else will you enjoy coffee with such unique displays as medicine bottles, bedpans and scales? Something to write home about for sure. Or text home about. Or tweet, Instagram, facebook. Better yet, just invite your friends out yonder back home to join you on your next trip here to Camden!
Looking for a Schooner ride? Choose from several in beautiful Camden Harbor. Hike the trails, visit the Islands.
Within a few minutes drive you can Tee it up at some of the best golf courses Camden area has to offer. Can you say Samoset!

Very cozy and private. Spiral staircase to bedroom. Sliding glass doors open to wrap-around deck and lawn that slopes to ocean. 300+ feet deep water frontage separated from lawn by broad rock ledge. Enjoy your morning coffee watching lobster and sail boats in the Mussel Ridge Channel. Unbelievable and peaceful views out to ocean and north to the Camden Hills. - "This classic Maine cottage has been lovingly maintained, is clean, uncluttered and has everything you need to be comfortable. There have been updates, such as a stunning bathroom, while still maintaining its original charm and character. There is an eclectic mix of artwork and a welcoming atmosphere that inspires a feeling of calm. There was plenty of room for our family of 4 (kids 10&13). The screened in porch was a rare find and enjoyed daily. We had a couple days of rain so the porch allowed us to still feel “outside” and be able to take in the breathtaking view while we played games, ate or read. The pebbly beach is shared with the house across the road but we had it all to ourselves. High tide was perfect for launching kayaks, taking a quick dip and walking on the big rocks. Mid-low tide was spent beach combing, exploring tide pools and reading and relaxing in a beach chair. It’s a great beach for little ones with magic and wonder all around. We saw many bird species including a bald eagle. It’s within walking distance to Lobster Lane books- a must see- and about a mile from McLoons lobster shack. I honestly can’t say enough positive things about this cottage and location. We’ve been coming to this area of Maine for 25 years and this may be our favorite rental yet. Chris was so kind and easy to communicate with. We look forward to returning next year! Thank you Chris for sharing your beautiful cottage!"

Completed in 2019, Seal Cottage sits nestled amongst the trees with unparalleled waterfront views of Seal Harbor from every room. The cottage is located on Spruce Head Island, accessible by a causeway linking it to the mainland and nearby Port Clyde, South Thomaston, Rockland, and Camden. Spruce Head island has a rich quarry history. Until 1910, The Sprucehead Quarry mined and shipped granite for building use across the US. Seal Cottage is located right at Powder House Cove, named for its storage of the "powder" used to excavate the granite. A few granite relics left behind from the island's quarry days remain on the property.
The cottage was designed to maximize surrounding views while embodying Maine coastal charm. Due to the cottage’s location, 50’ from the cove and framed by spruce trees, one feels perched above the water as though in a tree house. Seal Cottage is quiet and private, making it a lovely retreat for late spring, summer, or fall. Entering the great room, comprised of the kitchen and living room with a cast iron gas stove, you will find all the modern comforts needed for a cozy and relaxing vacation. The large windows in this room face due south, allowing you to catch the sunlight all day and beautiful moonlit skies reflecting on the ocean and harbor in the evening. Beyond the great room lies two bedrooms with ocean views, one with a queen size bed and one with two twin beds. The cottage's bathroom (the only room without an ocean view) has a walk-in shower with pebble tiled floor. We limit guests to 4 people and do not allow pets. Should you require additional space our neighboring cottage, Spruce Spray sleeps 6. (VRBO# 913026)
Outside enjoy your morning coffee and evening drinks on the front porch. If you prefer to be closer to the water’s edge- there’s also a lovely stone patio complete with a picnic table, grill, and Adirondack chairs. Either way you’ll enjoy watching the lobster boats turn with the tides, listening to the gentle waves, and taking in the salty sea breeze. The sandy beach and protected harbor allow for great access to the water for kayaking. Whitehead Island is just 1 mile across the harbor or you can stay close and explore the coastline around Spruce Head Island. If you prefer to stay on the land, the sandy beach is a great place to search for sea shells and sea glass or to explore the rocky coastal edge along the large granite formations.
Although you may find it hard to venture out from our cozy retreat, there is much to do and see nearby! For the most picturesque lobster shack meal, McLoon’s is a must, located within walking distance from Seal Cottage. Birch Point Beach State Park, located 6 miles away, offers breathtaking views of Penobscot Bay from a sandy crescent shaped beach. The perfect location for picnicking, fishing and swimming. Nearby Owls Head State Park and Lighthouse offers a nice walk and Owls Head Transportation Museum is a must see for those who enjoy aviation and antique vehicles. Fifteen minutes away, Rockland is famed for its cultural scene, including Farnsworth Art Museum & Wyeth Center, CMCA (Center for Maine Contemporary Art), The Maine Lighthouse Museum, and The Strand Theater. Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse provides beautiful photo opportunities. There are many fantastic places to dine in Rockland, from fine dining at the award-winning Primo Restaurant, sushi at Suzuki’s Sushi Bar, or In Good Company for fantastic food & drinks, there is something for everyone. A short drive away, Camden known as the "Jewel of the Coast", is a quintessential Maine town filled with quaint shops, restaurants, and beautiful scenic views. Camden also offers abundant hiking opportunities, including Mt. Battie (also accessible by car), whose summit provides a bird's eye view of the surrounding islands.
We strive to make our guests stay as pleasant as possible and we hope that you will love Seal Cottage and the surrounding areas as much as we do!

- "We had an incredible time at Heron cottage. It’s on a lovely inlet that’s perfect for kayaking. Access is about 3 hours on either side of high tide. The islands just off the coast of deer isle are beautiful to paddle to. One word: Magical Lots of hiking through forests and at the waters edge. A trip to Isle au Haut is a must. Arrive at the dock in Stonington at least an hour before departure to get a ticket. They operate on a first come first serve basis. Barbara was a great host and the next door neighbor was really welcoming and full of info about the area. We will definitely go again."

Do you like camping but like a little more comfort than what a tent can offer? Would you like to unplug and tune out? Then this is the place for you. Wake up to the sounds of Lobster boats, Osprey, Bald Eagles, Gulls, Terns, Harbor seals, Great Blue Herons, and Loons. Eat dinner on the deck overlooking the bay with spectacular western views of the sunset. These are just a few of the amazing sights and sounds you will experience while “glamping” in this cozy waterfront cottage. This is an island: no car access, no ferry (private boat only), or stores.
The cottage has an open concept living/dining/kitchen area with woodstove (wood is provided). Cathedral ceilings fill the space with plenty of natural daylight. It has 2 bedrooms: Master with Queen bed and a second bedroom with two twin beds. All bedding is provided. There is one bathroom with toilet, sink and shower. Bath towels, toilet paper as well as bath soap and shampoo will be provided. The kitchen has a full size stove and refrigerator (both fueled by propane). All dishes, pots and pans as well as Paper towels, sugar and basic spices are provided. There is a large wrap around deck with canopy and seating for outdoor meals. Outdoor grill and lobster cooker w/propane also provided.
Bring your own boat, kayak/s or sailing craft. Whether you have your own boat or not, the owners will arrange to take you across on checkin/check out day. We will have extra adult life jackets available if needed. However, if you have children in your party they must have Coast Guard approved properly fitted life jackets.
If you trailer your own boat, there is a boat launch ramp in the Harbor that you can use. For an extra fee, 2 deep water moorings -one on the island and one in the harbor are available for off island junkets ($25/day for one or $150/week) or $35/day for both or $210/week) also the use of a small tender is available ($15/day or $100/week-on the island). If you do not have a boat we can provide transportation if we are in residence at our other cottage or provide a listing of local places that rent kayaks.
You will need to plan your meals for your stay and bring your groceries with you. Be sure to bring reusable bags or waterproof containers for groceries. Maine no longer offers plastic bags and paper bags are useless around the water
Since the cottage is located in the woods, with no public utilities, there is no smoking allowed anywhere on the property.
All electricity (Lights only) is Solar (12 volt only). There is a small inverter for limited use of the stereo, and other small devices for limited periods of time. Please bring a (cigarette lighter type or usb) car charger for your cell phone and other mobile devices or computer. You can bring your own hotspot.
The dock is shared with one other home, which is where the owners stay.
Swimming can be done from the private dock or almost any place along the shore, and there is a right of way access to a small beach a short walk from the cottage.
Visit the Old Quarry or take a walk to the island cemetery. There are plenty of walking trails on the island (a map will be provided). Island hopping is one of our favorite things to do, just be respectful of the environment and any private homes.
The Town of Friendship is ideally located under an hour from many local attractions-Pemaquid Lighthouse, Port Clyde and Monhegan Island. It is a short drive to Camden, Rockport, Rockland, Damariscotta, Boothbay Harbor and Wiscasset, just to name a few…
This is the perfect place to sit back, unwind, unplug and get away from all the distractions of everyday life. Great for families or couples looking to get away from it all!
- "We had an amazing time staying at Odette’s island cabin. We spent the weekend swimming and exploring trails/beaches on this awesome little island. Our dogs had a blast swimming and exploring as well. Odette was the sweetest and her cabin was stocked of plenty of accommodations for those with littles (books/toys, baby gates, booster, highchair). 10/10 best family get away." - "I’m hesitant to share my review- because I want to keep this sweet gem all to myself!! This is the perfect getaway- isolated enough to feel removed from busy day to day life, but still with modern conveniences and a quick boat ride back to the mainland. We loved our stay in the cabin- which was well equipped with anything we could need. It was so quiet and peaceful. My family loved sitting on the rocks watching boats and sea life, getting lost on the island trails, and exploring small beaches that we had all to ourselves. Odette was a generous hostess and made coming to her little island paradise very easy. Would definitely recommend staying here to anyone who wants to get off the grid for a bit for a relaxing break."

This peaceful and quiet cottage on Greenlaw Cove has an open floor plan and pine walls adding warmth and coziness to your stay. A sliding glass door opens to the wrap-around deck overlooking Greenlaw Cove. Two bedrooms (queen and full) and 2 bathrooms are on the main floor. The spacious back lawn offers sun and shade with ample outdoor seating - perfect for watching the birds come and go to the bird feeders and hummingbirds enjoying the flowering plants. There is easy access to the beach to explore at low tide or to launch a boat at high tide. The perfect getaway! Saturday to Saturday rentals ONLY please!
- "The house was in a beautiful location. It was very clean and well equipped. We loved watching the tides change from the deck." - "This was such a treat to be where the forest meets the ocean. We were mesmerized with the ebbing and flow tide - exposing huge rocks in the water as the tide went out. Really just magical. We also logged over 70+ species of birds on this property. Just an awesome place." - "This home is a gem peacefully nestled in Greenlaw Cove. The seclusion made for a relaxing vacation. With no one around, the dogs were able to run and play in the yard unleashed. The visit became particularly interesting when a freakish windstorm blew in the Friday before Christmas. The electricity on the island went out for a day or so. Thankfully, the home had a generator. The owners were very responsive to all inquiries and even made a special trip to check on us following the storm. I highly recommend this location to escape the pressures of life."

- "The house was very nice with a small pond (and ducks!) out back. There was access to the cove and water down the road and across the street. We were disappointed that the house was not on the water and probably would not have booked it had we known. But we did have an excellent time !" - "Beautifully maintained home and property, we didn't use it much for more than sleep and showers as we like to explore...but it was comfortable and cozy."

- "We had a great stay! The house is cute and comfortable. Convenient access to hiking and the beach. Bob and Judy were very communicative and helpful throughout." - "This is the perfect place if you're looking to be away from hustle and bustle. We took our 2 dogs and enjoyed walking in the conservation land right next door. The small private rocky beach was perfect for sitting in the sun, reading, and looking for sea glass. There is A/C downstairs, but not in the bedrooms. This was fine since the temp cooled down each night even in late July. Bob & Judy are lovely. We will definitely be back!"

- "The property is in excellent condition. Location right on the the lake on a tree covered lot with a great dock. A big plus is the large deck which is great for relaxing and watching lake activity (birds, slow moving boats, scenery). You can even catch some nice sized bass right from the dock. Seems remote but you're only 20 minutes from some fine restaurants. We just needed more than one week," - "Every detail was accounted for, bird feeders topped up, cozy lights on for our arrival, very clean. The view from the living room and deck is fantastic. This is a great place to stay. It was helpful to follow the printed directions on the final road, gmaps was not accurate at that point, but we were warned in advance."

We could not have been in a better location - within minutes of Rockland, downtown Rockport, and charming Camden! Mornings were spent on the back deck watching the boats and nesting osprey with a cup of coffee. Perfect! The home is in a quiet, private, and safe location; it had everything we needed to be comfortable in our home away from home. The bedrooms are on the 2nd floor accessible via spiral staircase. We had no problems, but they are quite narrow. Truly they added to the charm. The site manager was so kind, informative, and patient... we were a late arrival and he graciously met us well after 11pm in the rain to let us in and give a short tour. (Andy is a true gem!) We would absolutely stay at this sweet location again. Highly recommended! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"

- "Wanted more time…" - "We stayed for a weekend and had a great time wandering the shops and restaurants of Camden. Our cabin was the perfect size for the two of us, cozy and clean. The host was very nice, welcoming us and pointing out local attractions. Although the weather didn't cooperate in the traditional sense, it was very relaxing listening to the rain on the roof, and one night a ship passed by really close with its foghorn. Truly a delightful experience all around - we would definitely stay again."

Immaculate cottage on a peaceful street in the seaside village of Castine, just a lovely 1/2 mile stroll under century-old elm trees past beautiful historic houses to the downtown area and waterfront dock, where you can watch all types of sailing vessels, including restored schooners, sail in and out of the harbor while enjoying an ice cream cone or lobster roll. Cook your own live lobsters (available at the local market) in the furnished lobster pot, or enjoy one at any of several fine restaurants in the village. Enjoy activities in town, including hiking trails through mature forests, kayaking, golf, tennis, sailing, beachcombing, or fishing - or use the cottage as a base to explore the many attractions in the Down East area such as Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Camden, Stonington and Isle au Haut. The cottage is fully furnished with a spacious, modern kitchen with all utensils, and also has a washer/dryer.
- "Two of us—my wife and I--spent nine nights at “The Captain’s Cottage” in Castine, Maine, recently. The cottage, located on a quaint, quiet in-town street, was our home base for a lovely vacation of hikes and drives around scenic Castine, Blue Hill, and Deer Isle. It was so welcoming—charming, cozy, and comfortable—and well equipped with everything we needed for our stay, plus, all that the beautiful town of Castine has to offer (a lot!) was just a picturesque stroll away. Our hostess, Barbara, who lives in the house across the lawn, provided helpful pamphlets, maps, information on the history of Castine, and advice on places to go and things to see. There was even a plate of cookies waiting for us when we arrived! She was so accommodating and thoughtful. In addition, there was a great selection of books in a revolving bookcase in the living room. We highly recommend The Captain’s Cottage; we so enjoyed our stay there."

The cottage has a beautiful loft bedroom with vaulted ceilings, tiled bathroom, stackable washer and dryer, private parking, private back yard, covered porch and a private deck in the back. Free high speed fiber-optic wifi. Our main house is located just down the driveway, with gardens and honeybees. We have 3 small children and a dog. We are currently not allowing pets in The cottage to prevent guest allergies and it is not suitable for small children because of the bedroom loft setup, but we'd be happy to have older children who are aware of safety rules. The cottage is located across the driveway from a home business (an electrician and a photography studio). The cottage is centrally located to both Camden and Belfast (about 10 mi. each way), minutes to hiking trails and walking distance to Norton's Pond, Breezemere park, Library and the Lincolnville General Store (set to open this summer!), post office, town office and the school. The airy eat-in kitchen is perhaps the favorite room of the house. Windows let in lots of filtered light, and a French door opens to a deck, perennial gardens, and views down the valley. The kitchen comes fully equipped with a full-sized refrigerator and stove, microwave, coffee pot and kettle, toaster, and even a Ninja blender for your morning smoothie.
The cottage has two bedrooms, a loft with a luxurious queen bed and HDTV/DVD player, and a second bedroom with two twin beds.
The cozy living room has a vaulted ceiling and Swedish enamel wood stove to warm chilly evenings or rainy days. One full bath with a claw-foot tub is great for soaking after a day of hiking or adventure. There is also a modern efficiency washer and dryer.
High-speed internet makes this location a great remote work spot.
Guest access
The cottage has a fully fenced yard with gardens and parking for two vehicles. Entry is keyless.
Other things to note
Our place is a great fit for couples, solo travelers, and families with kids. Though we can sleep four, it is a bit small for four adults unless you don't mind being cozy!
The cottage has stairs at both entrances and to the loft bedroom. The tub/shower is a clawfoot with high sides that may be challenging for folks with limited mobility.
We have a brick hearth around the wood stove and open cupboards, so this rental may not be the best fit for families with toddlers.
We are located on a residential road and have one close neighbor with whom we share a driveway. Our neighbors are quiet and respectful. Because of how it is situated, our cottage feels very relaxing and private.

Retreating or working remotely here is a dream. Inspiration by wildlife, quiet time, focus and reflection, an incredible secluded ocean beach nearby. The cottage sits off the beaten path, yet is only 2.5 miles from stunning sunsets at the back shore beach. The small bedrooms have comfortable beds with 100% cotton linens and bedding, USB chargers, hi speed WiFi. Large country kitchen is a pleasure to cook in. Adventures-Penobscot Bay, miles of hiking trails, lighthouse & historic forts
The space
The cottage is fun and quirky, with steep, open stairs leading to the larger upstairs bedroom equipped with a queen bed, large dresser and a down-stuffed rocking chair and ottoman. The 2 bedrooms on the first floor have low, sloping ceilings and are tiny, comfortable sleeping spaces. The bathroom is shower only - this is a rustic cottage and we're pretty real about disclosing flaws. There is a 10-15 minute wait time between showers for the water to reheat, and the shower has a light iron stain on the floor, but the high end cleaning team are rockstars-you won’t find a speck of dust or a thing out of place throughout the home.
Board games and books are in the exposed joist living room along with comfortable leather furniture and a smart TV ready for your streaming accounts. The kitchen is a light and airy happy place, spacious and well appointed for cooking your favorite meals, including Maine Lobstah! Take time to visit the secluded, salt water Back Shore beach 2.5 miles away to search for salt treasures, sea glass and shells.

There is no TV or internet, even our phone is an old rotary one. You will see that we have a good radio, and games and books to read, and plenty of things to do outside. We hope you will take the time at our cottage to comfortably reconnect with yourself, and each other, while enjoying what Maine is renowned for, our quality of life.
The space
Located at 83 Ballyhac Rd in Owls Head, we are situated on 2 acres in a beautiful, quiet setting with tidal frontage on Ballyhac Cove. Our cottage is approximately 600 sq/ft and all the rooms you will be using are on the ground floor. Our place utilizes a heat pump that provides both heating and cooling, you can adjust the temperature up and down for heating and cooling. Please do not touch other settings or turn it off. The heat pump is most cost and environmentally effective when left running. The cottage also utilizes an on demand water heater for showers and laundry, please do not touch the settings. While there is a loft, we do not advise guests to go up as it can be difficult for people to come back down. Please do not allow children to go up there.

Rockland, with its festivals, award winning restaurants like Primo, museums such as the Farnsworth and the Maine Center for Contemporary Art are only 5 miles away.
Guest access
You will have full access to the cottage and small storage shed. We ask that you not go up into the lofts as many people have a hard time coming down.
Other things to note
Be careful if backing out of the driveway on to Ballyhac road on sunny days. While it is a very quiet street, on sunny days people go to beach at the end of the road, so expect more vehicles at those times than evening through morning.
Also be aware the ground approaching front door is uneven, as is the lawn and grounds in general. The steps into the cottage do not have a rail.
Inside also be aware there is a step into and out of the shower and there is no grab bar. We do not recommend guests go up to the loft as many people experience it a challenge to come back down.

Our cozy guest cottage has easy beachfront/kayak/canoe access, and is located very close (within walking distance at low tide) to the public boat launch for larger boats. Great location to explore Deer Isle, Acadia (approx 1hr), Castine (45m), and the Bangor (1hr) area. Brave children and adults even swim from the beach but comfortable swimming ponds/lakes are 10m in several directions.
The hot-tub is open year-round!
Additional guests can be considered prior to booking.
Other things to note
We don't greet guests upon arrival but are available as needed. We live in the main house year-round so you will see or hear us and our children outside and coming/going. We will provide our cell numbers to text or call if needed.
Wifi is DSL with consistent speeds up to 40Mbps.
We have AT&T cell service and are usually able to make/receive calls without issue. Some common cell carriers have zero service.
TV is antenna with several channels and there is a DVD player with a selection of DVDs. There is also a Roku available to use with your own accounts.
We offer free laundry service and can arrange to pick up/drop off your laundry at the door and a drying rack is also in the guest cottage for towel and swimsuits.
Other items available in guest house not listed in AirBandB's checklist; large crockpot, blender, baby/toddler hiking backpack, foldable wagon, and infant carseat.
Coffee/creamers/sweeteners and teas are available with a coffee maker and kettle. Condiments, spices, ice packs, a small cooler and picnic set are available.
Beach access is through the backyard (look for the stacked kayaks and chairs for the set of stairs with railing to enter the beach).
*NOTE* - We have an outdoor dog, a Great Pyrenees, on the far end of the property opposite of the guest house, who does bark at night at new guest's arrivals or loud voices, deer, squirrels, or wind?. He is the dad of two Nigerian Dwarf goats, so he is very protective, DON'T PET! The closest neighbors also have outside dogs seasonally. The dog and goats are always fenced in.
*ANOTHER NEW NOTE* - We have three chickens, if you are scared of chickens, let us know when booking and we will keep them in the coop, they are usually in the coop anyway. We've also had a chicken fatality due to a guest not listing a dog when booking - the chickens are kept in the coop when a dog visits, sometimes they just can't help themselves and better safe than sorry!

I have just added an 8x8 mud room and a 10x15 new second bedroom to this amazing cottage. I have a new rock chimney and a brand new wood stove incase of those chilly nights up here in Midcoast Maine. **please note that there is a 30mph residential road between the cottages and the water***

Big parking space at top of driveway where camp is pleasantly situated on a big rock sloping ledge- also can park at bottom of trail at lakeside (the path from cottage to water takes one to two minutes to walk)

Other things to note
If you look in the pictures there is a ladder that goes to a sleeping loft but I have taken that out and the loft is not in use. I did add a curtain for the big sliding glass doors for privacy (not that anyone can see in since the cottage is so far off the road). Also I have a new ac unit incase you need it

'OwLand' has an open floor plan downstairs with 1 bathroom and two lovely bedrooms upstairs. Well-equipped kitchen is a pleasure to cook in. Comfy living room/dining room with futon sofa and big nest-like loveseat and lots of books, including an ever-growing collection of Maine non-fiction and fiction, as well as puzzles and games to enjoy:-) Futon sofa folds out to a double/full bed for extra sleeping space if needed (not private as it's in the middle of the living room).
Single bathroom downstairs has a classic clawfoot tub with shower and shower hose.
Ample light fills the space from South-facing windows downstairs and skylights upstairs. The beautiful wood stove with glass door and freestanding stone chimney in the middle of the living room provides super cozy warmth and ambiance during the cold months! We provide detailed directions for operating it and are available 24-7 for any questions while using it.
Through the years the cottage has worked well for various permutations of guests: 1 or 2 couples, 1 or 2 individuals, or a couple and 1 or 2 individuals. We CANNOT accommodate more than 4 people with our septic system and the single bathroom is shared by all.
The cottage is simple and down to earth while having everything you need for a deeply comfortable and relaxing stay. The general feeling here is easygoing and serene and it's our favorite thing to share it with others! Here in the clearing in the woods on the edge of an ever-growing beaver pond, you're likely to see a variety of birds including a large flock of wild turkeys that frequently come through foraging on the lawn right outside the front door. Barred Owls live and raise their young in the White Pines around the house and they are regularly heard calling and can sometimes be seen right outside (more information about them in the details below:)
Things to NOTE before booking:
~The cottage is not suitable for those with joint issues or limited mobility as the bathtub requires stepping high up to get over the side and into it and the bedrooms are on the second floor and accessed by a steep staircase (there is no bathroom upstairs).
~The windows downstairs don't have shades or curtains on any of them except for the bathroom. The cottage is located in the middle of acres of woods and not in sight of any neighbors, so we have never needed or wanted shades. There are shades on the upstairs bedroom windows and skylights. If you're uncomfortable with not having coverings on the windows on the ground floor, it might not be an ideal spot for you.
~For wintertime stays (Nov-March), plan to bring warm slippers as the downstairs floors are quite chilly! The cottage is on an uninsulated concrete slab and the tiled floors in the kitchen and bathroom get pretty darn cold. We have many area rugs (doubled up in the bathroom:) but slippers make a big difference. We have some extras if anyone forgets them!
FOR FOLKS WITH DOGS ONLY, please be aware of some additional safety considerations outside on the property prior to booking:
The property is in a very rural location in a wild setting surrounded by hundreds of acres of woods and the yard is not fenced at all, so if dogs aren't leashed, it's important to keep a close eye on dogs and under voice command. There are porcupines in the woods and we have seen one walking directly next to the house at night as recently as late April 2025. They're mostly nocturnal (but can be active any time of day) so especially at night it is crucial to keep close control of dogs when they are outside, when porcupines are most likely to be on the ground walking from one tree to another. An encounter with porcupine quills can be extremely painful and awful for a dog, requiring a very expensive emergency vet bill, and can have complications including the potential for life-threatening infection.
Also, there is a very muddy beaver pond and swamp with active beavers approximately 20 yards from the front of the cottage, so care needs to be taken to prevent dogs from getting into it and drinking the water which is almost certain to have Giardia, a water-borne parasite (protozoa) otherwise known as 'Beaver Fever' which can cause diarrhea and other stomach issues in dogs as well as humans. Depending on whether your dog likes getting in water and whether you are concerned about this, it can mean keeping them on a leash outside to prevent them from running into the pond to muck around.
If you are concerned about any of these potential hazards for your dog, the simple solution is to keep them leashed when they're outside. The long gravel driveway is a good place to go for a walk out and back, where there is little to no exposure to ticks.
All this having been said, this is a wonderful spot where we have always had dogs for over 10 years and many, many dogs have stayed here and none have ever had any trouble. If you keep tabs on them outside they have a ball and the cottage inside is very dog friendly and they love it!
Guest access
Guests have access to the whole, private cottage and the surrounding property, which includes approximately 2 maintained acres with mowed lawn, perennial flower beds, vegetable bed and herb pots, glass greenhouse, unmoved back field/orchard, woods beyond, and long gravel driveway with culvert bridge over a seasonal stream (which usually dries up from roughly mid-July-mid-September). There are no neighbors in sight; our land combined with that of our good friends next door is over a hundred acres of forest with many more beyond.
There's lots of space for tenting outside if anyone wants to sleep a night or two under the stars!
There's a gas grill for outdoor cooking and a glass table with 4 chairs that can be placed anywhere on lawn. We have a nifty metal fire pit for campfires when fire danger is low (check online and use commonsense); it can be situated on the lawn or driveway at least 50' away from wood buildings and has a grill top for cooking on the wood fire, one of our favorite things to do!
***IMPORTANT TO NOTE AHEAD OF TIME ABOUT SPENDING TIME OUTSIDE***
During the summer months especially, toxic Browntail Moth caterpillar hairs that cause an *extremely severe* skin rash (think poison ivy x 10, it's horrendous) can be on outdoor surfaces anywhere in our region of Maine (they are the larval stage of a cyclical invasive moth that has been prevalent for the past 4 years or so and *hopefully* will be declining soon!) so wearing long sleeves and pants and putting towels and tablecloths on chairs and tables (we provide lots of extras at the house) is necessary to avoid skin contact. Also, dogs who spend time outside lying or rolling on the ground or running through the woods such that they touch underbrush can get the toxic hairs on their coat and then you can get it from touching them. Dogs aren't affected by the BTM but precautions need to be taken to prevent them from getting the hairs on their fur and then transferring them to you.
DEER AND DOG TICKS ARE ALARMINGLY ABUNDANT in the area and on our property these days. Tick preventative measures (ie- spraying clothing and fur, and checking carefully for ticks every night) absolutely need to be taken for both humans and dogs. This is true anywhere in Midcoast Maine, not just on our property.
FOR FOLKS WITH DOGS, please be aware of some additional safety considerations prior to booking. The property is in a very rural location in a wild setting surrounded by hundreds of acres of woods and the yard is not fenced at all, so it's important to keep a close eye on dogs and under voice command when they're outside, if they aren't leashed. There are porcupines in the woods and we have seen one walking directly next to the house at night as recently as late April 2025. They're mostly nocturnal (but can be active any time of day) so especially at night it is crucial to keep close control of dogs when they go outside, when porcupines are most likely to be on the ground walking from one tree to another.
Other things to note
The house was built by back to the landers in the 1970's and has wonderful character and of course some quirkiness! It's a laid-back space that's very well equipped and deeply comfortable. It has been a nurturing, restorative place for many people through the years.
Please note that during the winter months of November-March guests have the option to use the wood stove and seasoned firewood provided, which is the coziest source of heat, but the mini-split/heat pump is always available, as well as a propane heating unit for backup in extreme cold. We provide detailed instructions for how to safely and properly operate the wood stove and are always available 24/7 on the app or by phone to answer questions or troubleshoot.
The wifi is great for working from home (fiber optic was brought into our neighborhood in fall 2022 and it's now an unprecedented 458 mbps!) and there's a good sized desk under the picture window in the living room, as well as a smaller one upstairs in the guest room where the door can be closed for privacy while working if needed. The large dining room table with 2 leaves and the big coffee table in front of the couch can also be used as large surfaces for work or puzzles (there are some really good ones here!)
We provide a variety of teas, local honey and Maine-roasted coffee for our guests:) Cooking in the lovely open kitchen is one of our favorite things to do and we keep it well stocked with many spices, oils, condiments and cooking basics for all to use and everyone leaves some of their extras for others in the community cupboards when they depart!
In the main bedroom there's a very comfortable, firm organic natural latex queen mattress with an organic cotton cover and all of our bedding is natural fibers~ cotton, linen, organic wool and down. In the guest room there's a queen bed as well as a single/twin futon sofa that folds out.
There is a 20" TV in the living room for guests to connect to their own streaming accounts if they wish (Apple TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu etc.) but NOTE that there is NO TV service on site.
We use natural, non-toxic cleaning products and laundry detergent as well as 100% post-consumer recycled paper goods. There's a compost crock by the the kitchen sink if guests wish to compost their kitchen waste (veg, fruit, eggshells, shellfish shells, coffee grounds, tea bags, paper towels). If it should need to be emptied during your stay the labeled compost pile is located on the edge of the lawn out back.
--->Be aware that during the warmer months April-October there are *lots* of insect pests on the property as there are in all of New England, including but not limited to black flies, mosquitoes, deer flies, deer ticks, dog ticks and toxic *browntail moth caterpillars* that cause a severely irritating skin rash. NOTE: BLACKFLY SEASON is roughly MAY and JUNE, and BTM caterpillars are most active in JUNE and JULY. Please ask for more information before booking if you are concerned. We provide headnets and bug suits for those who visit during black fly season (or for mosquitos and deer flies) and want to spend time outside!
Throughout the entire TICK SEASON (roughly April-October but ticks can be active any time of year when it warms up above freezing) precautions against ticks absolutely need to be taken for humans and pets when spending time outside (ask for info about how to prevent exposure, and several kinds of insect sprays are available on site.)
The wonderful original Belfast Farmer's Market is every Friday from 9-1 6 miles away in downtown Belfast, as are the Belfast Co-Op and Hannaford's. Swan Lake Grocery (+ gas) is just 3 miles away at the southern end of Swan Lake and is a great place to pick up some things quick on your way to or from excursions.
We have lots of information about the local area, including guidebooks, maps and a large collection of our favorite books about Maine. Over the years I put together a guide to Belfast and the local area which is continually updated with new recommendations from our friends and guests. And I have several Airbnb guidebooks--- hiking, boating, local produce sources, favorite places in the Belfast area--- on the app:)
Barred Owls live and raise their young every year in the woods around the house and are often heard at night and sometimes even seen during the day! In May and June the owlets are a couple of months old and are very curious and often perch on branches right outside the house which is a treat to see. They can be located by their raspy whistling begging calls and then sometimes seen curiously and comically peering down at you! Over many years hearing and seeing the owls so often and having had a couple of seemingly mystical experiences with them, we eventually came to call this beloved place in the woods 'OwLand'.
We feel fortunate to steward the land here and love caring for an enchanting, peaceful spot for folks to rest and restore while experiencing the wild magic of Midcoast Maine :-)
Please send me a note if you have any questions about OwLand inside or out!
