Sea Dreams cottage sits 100 feet from the high tide mark. Relax to the sound of the surf, loons and harbor bell and watch lobster boats pass by. Plenty to do at the cottage; spend the day on the beach, bring your kayaks and set out right from the beach, spend time with your kids in the playing field or sit and read a book. Watch seals and loons from the cottage. Young's Lobster Pound for lobsters in the rough is 3 minutes away. It is also centrally located for day trips; 1 hour 15 minutes to Acadia National Park, 25 minutes to Camden, 40 minutes to Rockland, and 5 minutes to Belfast center.
- "Very clean! Perfect location! Felt just as comfortable as being at home. Loved walking on beach at low tide - lots of beach to walk, very private and quiet. Definitely want to come back. Owner extremely easy to work with and responsive. One of the best VRBO experiences we’ve had." - "Relaxing from the time we pulled up to the house. Janet is friendly and helpful and maintains an exquisite property. Lovely town and stay." - "The cottage was very well equipped and in a beautiful location on the ocean offering a nice and peaceful setting. - "We had a wonderful stay in Belfast. The town is quaint and delightful. The cottage is adorable and we had so much fun hanging out on the private dock. Such a perfect getaway!" - "This cottage, Forepeak, is just about perfect – love the location – Belfast is an amazing small town - if you like, the town is a short walk from the cottage on a lovely trail. The cottage is also an easy drive of much of the mid-coast (we went to Acadia, Bar Harbor, Camden, Rockland, Boothbay Harbor, and Freeport). The cottage itself is so lovely – love that there is a king-size bed, a well-equipped kitchen, and laundry. The upstairs loft has a double bed and powder room. The back deck is wonderful and has a grill and chiminea. The dock is a short walk down the lawn – it’s such a peaceful place to just relax. Jon is a wonderful host! Can’t wait to go back."

Surfside cottage sits just 100 feet from the high tide mark on the shore of Penobscot Bay in Belfast Maine. This is rare along the Maine coast and allows you to experience both the spectacular views of the ocean, and the sounds of the coast. Relax to the sound of the surf, call of the loons and harbor bell. Watch lobster boats and schooners pass by from your chair overlooking the bay. All ocean facing walls have windows. Plenty to do right at the cottage; spend the day on the beach, bring your kayaks and set out right from the beach, spend time with your kids in the field or sit or read a book on the porch, patio or front room. Watch seals and loons from the cottage. All the convenience of downtown Belfast is 5 minutes away, while at the cottage you will feel perched on the edge of the bay. The view from the cottage is breathtaking and ever changing. The beach is steps way and great for exploring, sitting or swimming (in season). The cottage is also centrally located for day trips; 1 hour 15 minutes to Acadia National Park, 25 minutes to Camden, 40 minutes to Rockland, and 5 minutes to Belfast center.
This adorable coastal cottage was rebuilt in 2010.
- "I cannot say enough good about this house. The location is amazing, you are right on the water. You will for sure see herons and loons and probably seals, eagles, and ospreys. The water in August was actually not bad for Maine, you can swim right in front of the house. Belfast is maybe 10-15 minutes away and is a charming town, Camden and Rockland are maybe 25-30 minutes down the road." - "What a slice of heaven! The cottage itself was so clean and thoughtfully stocked, and the view is unbeatable! We spent hours on the beach at low tide, and saw only a small handful of other people! Plus Belfast is such a cool spot and a great home base to explore from. If you’re at all on the fence- book it. If I could move in I would!!"

- "We (family of four and dog) were comfortable and happy in our six-night stay at this wonderful cottage in the Waldo woods outside Belfast, our first sightseeing trip to Maine in decades. It was just as described and perfectly situated for multiple Maine adventures. We had just about everything we needed but clothes and groceries — it was the best appointed rental we’ve been in. The kind owners were immediately responsive when we had momentary trouble with the door lock and talked us through it until it was resolved. They informed us later when they were going to pop over to mow the lawn after a long rainy spell broke, and it was a pleasure to meet them as we set off for new sights. They even left a dog frisbee after meeting our lab! They were also generous and gracious about sharing information on sights nearby and were so kind. The towels and sheets, provided, were high quality. The appliances were new and it appears the house has been well and recently renovated. There were plenty of games and toys. They even had k cups and individually packaged snacks like cookies, breakfast bars, and biscotti in a basket for us. The piano could use a tuning, but who expects a piano in a rental at all, let alone a tuned one? The cottage was charming and peaceful, the stars on the clear nights were spectacular, and we loved the nightly concerts of bullfrogs in the pond and occasional owls calling to each other, as well as the unparalleled morning birdsong serenades (which did not wake us up, as this small house is well insulated). The AC worked well in the heat wave. We would rent this place again in an instant and do hope to return someday."

My kids (10, 7, and 4) and husband and I loved swimming in the crystal clear water, snorkeling around the rocks, fishing off the docks and kayaks (we caught and released 4 fish this year- two sunfish by kids and two bass by my husband). We also relaxed in the hammock and watched movies and played with the toys inside in the cool AC. We enjoyed kayaking over to explore Swan Lake State Park and ventured out to nearby Belfast, Perrys Nut House, and Fort Point State Park. It was a perfect vacation and we may be back next year for more."

Belfast celebrates diversity. We welcome guests from all backgrounds.
The space
The airy eat-in kitchen is perhaps the favorite room of the house. Windows let in lots of filtered light, and a French door opens to a deck, perennial gardens, and views down the valley. The kitchen comes fully equipped with a full-sized refrigerator and stove, microwave, coffee pot and kettle, toaster, and even a Ninja blender for your morning smoothie.
The cottage has two bedrooms, a loft with a luxurious queen bed and HDTV/DVD player, and a second bedroom with two twin beds.
The cozy living room has a vaulted ceiling and Swedish enamel wood stove to warm chilly evenings or rainy days. One full bath with a claw-foot tub is great for soaking after a day of hiking or adventure. There is also a modern efficiency washer and dryer.
High-speed internet makes this location a great remote work spot.

The cottage has a fully fenced yard with gardens and parking for two vehicles. Entry is keyless.
Other things to note
Our place is a great fit for couples, solo travelers, and families with kids. Though we can sleep four, it is a bit small for four adults unless you don't mind being cozy!
The cottage has stairs at both entrances and to the loft bedroom. The tub/shower is a clawfoot with high sides that may be challenging for folks with limited mobility.
We have a brick hearth around the wood stove and open cupboards, so this rental may not be the best fit for families with toddlers.
We are located on a residential road and have one close neighbor with whom we share a driveway. Our neighbors are quiet and respectful. Because of how it is situated, our cottage feels very relaxing and private.

The space
'OwLand' has an open floor plan downstairs with 1 bathroom and two lovely bedrooms upstairs. Well-equipped kitchen is a pleasure to cook in. Comfy living room/dining room with futon sofa and big nest-like loveseat and lots of books, including an ever-growing collection of Maine non-fiction and fiction, as well as puzzles and games to enjoy:-) Futon sofa folds out to a double/full bed for extra sleeping space if needed (not private as it's in the middle of the living room).
Single bathroom downstairs has a classic clawfoot tub with shower and shower hose.
Ample light fills the space from South-facing windows downstairs and skylights upstairs. The beautiful wood stove with glass door and freestanding stone chimney in the middle of the living room provides super cozy warmth and ambiance during the cold months! We provide detailed directions for operating it and are available 24-7 for any questions while using it.
Through the years the cottage has worked well for various permutations of guests: 1 or 2 couples, 1 or 2 individuals, or a couple and 1 or 2 individuals. We CANNOT accommodate more than 4 people with our septic system and the single bathroom is shared by all.
The cottage is simple and down to earth while having everything you need for a deeply comfortable and relaxing stay. The general feeling here is easygoing and serene and it's our favorite thing to share it with others! Here in the clearing in the woods on the edge of an ever-growing beaver pond, you're likely to see a variety of birds including a large flock of wild turkeys that frequently come through foraging on the lawn right outside the front door. Barred Owls live and raise their young in the White Pines around the house and they are regularly heard calling and can sometimes be seen right outside (more information about them in the details below:)
Things to NOTE before booking:
~The cottage is not suitable for those with joint issues or limited mobility as the bathtub requires stepping high up to get over the side and into it and the bedrooms are on the second floor and accessed by a steep staircase (there is no bathroom upstairs).
~The windows downstairs don't have shades or curtains on any of them except for the bathroom. The cottage is located in the middle of acres of woods and not in sight of any neighbors, so we have never needed or wanted shades. There are shades on the upstairs bedroom windows and skylights. If you're uncomfortable with not having coverings on the windows on the ground floor, it might not be an ideal spot for you.
~For wintertime stays (Nov-March), plan to bring warm slippers as the downstairs floors are quite chilly! The cottage is on an uninsulated concrete slab and the tiled floors in the kitchen and bathroom get pretty darn cold. We have many area rugs (doubled up in the bathroom:) but slippers make a big difference. We have some extras if anyone forgets them!
FOR FOLKS WITH DOGS ONLY, please be aware of some additional safety considerations outside on the property prior to booking:
The property is in a very rural location in a wild setting surrounded by hundreds of acres of woods and the yard is not fenced at all, so if dogs aren't leashed, it's important to keep a close eye on dogs and under voice command. There are porcupines in the woods and we have seen one walking directly next to the house at night as recently as late April 2025. They're mostly nocturnal (but can be active any time of day) so especially at night it is crucial to keep close control of dogs when they are outside, when porcupines are most likely to be on the ground walking from one tree to another. An encounter with porcupine quills can be extremely painful and awful for a dog, requiring a very expensive emergency vet bill, and can have complications including the potential for life-threatening infection.
Also, there is a very muddy beaver pond and swamp with active beavers approximately 20 yards from the front of the cottage, so care needs to be taken to prevent dogs from getting into it and drinking the water which is almost certain to have Giardia, a water-borne parasite (protozoa) otherwise known as 'Beaver Fever' which can cause diarrhea and other stomach issues in dogs as well as humans. Depending on whether your dog likes getting in water and whether you are concerned about this, it can mean keeping them on a leash outside to prevent them from running into the pond to muck around.
If you are concerned about any of these potential hazards for your dog, the simple solution is to keep them leashed when they're outside. The long gravel driveway is a good place to go for a walk out and back, where there is little to no exposure to ticks.
All this having been said, this is a wonderful spot where we have always had dogs for over 10 years and many, many dogs have stayed here and none have ever had any trouble. If you keep tabs on them outside they have a ball and the cottage inside is very dog friendly and they love it!
Guest access
Guests have access to the whole, private cottage and the surrounding property, which includes approximately 2 maintained acres with mowed lawn, perennial flower beds, vegetable bed and herb pots, glass greenhouse, unmoved back field/orchard, woods beyond, and long gravel driveway with culvert bridge over a seasonal stream (which usually dries up from roughly mid-July-mid-September). There are no neighbors in sight; our land combined with that of our good friends next door is over a hundred acres of forest with many more beyond.
There's lots of space for tenting outside if anyone wants to sleep a night or two under the stars!
There's a gas grill for outdoor cooking and a glass table with 4 chairs that can be placed anywhere on lawn. We have a nifty metal fire pit for campfires when fire danger is low (check online and use commonsense); it can be situated on the lawn or driveway at least 50' away from wood buildings and has a grill top for cooking on the wood fire, one of our favorite things to do!
***IMPORTANT TO NOTE AHEAD OF TIME ABOUT SPENDING TIME OUTSIDE***
During the summer months especially, toxic Browntail Moth caterpillar hairs that cause an *extremely severe* skin rash (think poison ivy x 10, it's horrendous) can be on outdoor surfaces anywhere in our region of Maine (they are the larval stage of a cyclical invasive moth that has been prevalent for the past 4 years or so and *hopefully* will be declining soon!) so wearing long sleeves and pants and putting towels and tablecloths on chairs and tables (we provide lots of extras at the house) is necessary to avoid skin contact. Also, dogs who spend time outside lying or rolling on the ground or running through the woods such that they touch underbrush can get the toxic hairs on their coat and then you can get it from touching them. Dogs aren't affected by the BTM but precautions need to be taken to prevent them from getting the hairs on their fur and then transferring them to you.
DEER AND DOG TICKS ARE ALARMINGLY ABUNDANT in the area and on our property these days. Tick preventative measures (ie- spraying clothing and fur, and checking carefully for ticks every night) absolutely need to be taken for both humans and dogs. This is true anywhere in Midcoast Maine, not just on our property.
FOR FOLKS WITH DOGS, please be aware of some additional safety considerations prior to booking. Other things to note
The house was built by back to the landers in the 1970's and has wonderful character and of course some quirkiness! It's a laid-back space that's very well equipped and deeply comfortable. It has been a nurturing, restorative place for many people through the years.
Please note that during the winter months of November-March guests have the option to use the wood stove and seasoned firewood provided, which is the coziest source of heat, but the mini-split/heat pump is always available, as well as a propane heating unit for backup in extreme cold. We provide detailed instructions for how to safely and properly operate the wood stove and are always available 24/7 on the app or by phone to answer questions or troubleshoot.
The wifi is great for working from home (fiber optic was brought into our neighborhood in fall 2022 and it's now an unprecedented 458 mbps!) and there's a good sized desk under the picture window in the living room, as well as a smaller one upstairs in the guest room where the door can be closed for privacy while working if needed. The large dining room table with 2 leaves and the big coffee table in front of the couch can also be used as large surfaces for work or puzzles (there are some really good ones here!)
We provide a variety of teas, local honey and Maine-roasted coffee for our guests:) Cooking in the lovely open kitchen is one of our favorite things to do and we keep it well stocked with many spices, oils, condiments and cooking basics for all to use and everyone leaves some of their extras for others in the community cupboards when they depart!
In the main bedroom there's a very comfortable, firm organic natural latex queen mattress with an organic cotton cover and all of our bedding is natural fibers~ cotton, linen, organic wool and down. In the guest room there's a queen bed as well as a single/twin futon sofa that folds out.
There is a 20" TV in the living room for guests to connect to their own streaming accounts if they wish (Apple TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu etc.) but NOTE that there is NO TV service on site.
We use natural, non-toxic cleaning products and laundry detergent as well as 100% post-consumer recycled paper goods. There's a compost crock by the the kitchen sink if guests wish to compost their kitchen waste (veg, fruit, eggshells, shellfish shells, coffee grounds, tea bags, paper towels). If it should need to be emptied during your stay the labeled compost pile is located on the edge of the lawn out back.
--->Be aware that during the warmer months April-October there are *lots* of insect pests on the property as there are in all of New England, including but not limited to black flies, mosquitoes, deer flies, deer ticks, dog ticks and toxic *browntail moth caterpillars* that cause a severely irritating skin rash. NOTE: BLACKFLY SEASON is roughly MAY and JUNE, and BTM caterpillars are most active in JUNE and JULY. Please ask for more information before booking if you are concerned. We provide headnets and bug suits for those who visit during black fly season (or for mosquitos and deer flies) and want to spend time outside!
Throughout the entire TICK SEASON (roughly April-October but ticks can be active any time of year when it warms up above freezing) precautions against ticks absolutely need to be taken for humans and pets when spending time outside (ask for info about how to prevent exposure, and several kinds of insect sprays are available on site.)
The wonderful original Belfast Farmer's Market is every Friday from 9-1 6 miles away in downtown Belfast, as are the Belfast Co-Op and Hannaford's. Swan Lake Grocery (+ gas) is just 3 miles away at the southern end of Swan Lake and is a great place to pick up some things quick on your way to or from excursions.
We have lots of information about the local area, including guidebooks, maps and a large collection of our favorite books about Maine. Over the years I put together a guide to Belfast and the local area which is continually updated with new recommendations from our friends and guests. And I have several Airbnb guidebooks--- hiking, boating, local produce sources, favorite places in the Belfast area--- on the app:)
Barred Owls live and raise their young every year in the woods around the house and are often heard at night and sometimes even seen during the day! In May and June the owlets are a couple of months old and are very curious and often perch on branches right outside the house which is a treat to see. They can be located by their raspy whistling begging calls and then sometimes seen curiously and comically peering down at you! Over many years hearing and seeing the owls so often and having had a couple of seemingly mystical experiences with them, we eventually came to call this beloved place in the woods 'OwLand'.
We feel fortunate to steward the land here and love caring for an enchanting, peaceful spot for folks to rest and restore while experiencing the wild magic of Midcoast Maine :-)
Please send me a note if you have any questions about OwLand inside or out!
