History of Glendevon
Although we're not sure exactly how old Glendevon is precisely we have a documentary records dating from the early 19th century up to the present day
We know that the cottage has been inhabited by a succession of families working in seafaring and mining - industries and occupations of importance to the local area. Glendevon is a genuine fishermens' cottage
The profession of Master Mariner features in the ownership records commentary - a Master Mariner was the highest qualification possible in the Merchant Navy
Local Staithes names are connected to the cottage - Ward - Shippey - Crooks - Theaker
In 1861 Glendevon had 3 residents - this had risen to 8 in 1871 and included a young girl as a house servant - Sarah Crooks, and a lodger Ann Theaker
In 1881 one of the sons of the household Matthew Ward was at sea and is recorded as serving on the 'True Love' a fishing vessel from Whitby manned by Staithes fishermen
By 1911 Matthew was in the fish business on his own account as a Hawker owning his own horse and cart. It is not hard to imagine Matthew shouting his wares on 'The Staithe' then delivering orders by horse drawn transport to local villages

Glendevon cottage a delight to stay in ." - "Great position near the Cod and Lobster. Well proportioned cottage with 2 good size bedrooms , large kitchen and lounge. The cottage was very clean and comfortable and had everything we needed, we liked the lovely touches of flowers, milk, biscuits and even dog treats waiting for us. We weren't sure which car park we we're supposed to use on arrival and Sarah was on hand to help and throughout our stay. The cottage is well positioned for Staithes but being at the top of the village, it's a steep walk back which we didn't mind, but if you don't like hills don't visit Staithes! We would definitely recommend and we hope to visit again. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo"

- "We had a brilliant time at Captains Quarters which was much needed at this time. More than enough room for 6 of us with lots of lovely sofas to choose from. Sitting in the conservatory with coffee was a treat. Cosy and warm. Loads of cutlery and crockery. Lovely out-door space although our October weather was a bit windy. Ideal for dogs. Sarah was a delight to deal with, very friendly and helpful. Would definitely go back. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo"

We have stayed twice now at this cottage and we will certainly be staying again in the future. We brought our youngest son and his partner and they then booked and invited our sons partners parents because they said how fantastic and lovely it was. The last visit we invited our friends who in turn told their friends how wonderful it was and they booked a week this year in the spring. Emma who owns the property is brilliant. Nothing is too much trouble for her and any problems you have she deals with them promptly. This charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and boats bobbing in the harbour, is considered something of an artist’s dream, and even has its own popular Art and Heritage Festival along with regular workshops and artisan displays. The pretty houses and cottages dotted around the old harbour are surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, and a sheltered small beach is set amongst the rocky coastline. Steeped in history, Captain Cook served his apprenticeship in Staithes, and there are many old buildings to admire and a museum to take you back in time. To get to Staithes harbour there is quite a steep hill, so please do be mindful of this. Modern day Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to a RNLI lifeboat station, and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) land their catch of fish, crab and lobster. There are also boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and whale watching available. An ’Illusion Trail’ guides visitors around the network of back streets and alleyways. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the seashore. The Cleveland Way stretches its way along this dramatic coastline and is a firm favourite with walkers as it drops into many hidden bays and coves such as Robin Hood’s Bay and Saltburn-by-the-Sea. The wonderful town of Whitby is just 10 miles away with its regular events and festivals including the Goth Weekend, a regatta and regular live music events to complement its many fabulous restaurants and bars, tea rooms and delis. Try climbing the 199 steps up to the abbey and St Mary’s Church from where you can take in the breathtaking views down into the town and out to sea. Head inland to enjoy a myriad of walking and cycling routes that the National Park has to offer, enjoy a warm welcome in one of the many village inns dotted across the moors, or take it easy on board a steam train journey into the heart of this beautiful part of the world. - "We really enjoyed our stay - the site is very quiet but ideally situated to reach the local amenities. The Manager was very approachable and made us most welcome. We would most certainly stay there again." - "Spotlessly clean, cute little cabin. Everything you could need and a lovely touch with the welcome tray" - "Great place to stay in the picturesque small town of Staithes. Lodge was clean, comfortable and nice. Also pretty well equipped. Only minor things lacking that we noticed were an oven glove, a handle for the grill pan, a decent tin opener (there was one but it hardly worked), a shelf in the shower and perhaps a wall mirror in the bedroom. All round, though, very good value and recommended."

Dunroamin, our 200 year old Grade II listed fisherman's cottage, in the heart of the old village, has been lovingly renovated over the last year to provide comfortable accommodation for four people, with stylish but practical facilities including twin sinks in the house bathroom, a downstairs cloakroom, and a second bedroom which can be twin or double. Situated on a quiet alley between the High Street and the Beck, Dunroamin has the enviable advantage of an enclosed sunny south-facing yard.
- "I have enjoyed many breaks in Staithes over the years, and New Year there has always been a time we have particularly enjoyed. This visit was all we anticipated and a lovely relaxing break for our family. All properties in the lower village have their own quirky personality, and Dunroamin definitely ranks amongst the top few I have stayed at. The welcome was very warm and the property has been thoughtfully laid out, with very creative storage solutions and very nicely finished to a high standard. Particularly liked the preservation of so many original elements found at the property, a lovely touch. Communication was prompt and check in details concise and simple to follow. Thanks so much for a brilliant stay in our favourite place, the weather was unfortunately challenging at times which did mean us spending more time indoors than would be usual for us, but that didn't spoil our visit as the space was a pleasure for us to be using. Highly recommended 👌"

Town: The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms.
- "What a wonderful cottage! Very cozy and tucked away, but right in the centre of town. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook for ourselves, and the dining table doubled perfectly as a card table. Both rooms were ideal for couples, with adequate storage. Parking at the long stay at the top of the village was only £5 per day so ideal for a weekend trip. Would definitely recommend, and would definitely stay here again"

Cosy Grade II listed fisherman's cottage for 2 in the old part of Staithes, with a double bedroom, a modern kitchen and bathroom, electric heating throughout and wood burner in the lounge, Wi-fi. Dogs welcome.
The space
At the bottom of the steep cobbled bank in the heart of the quaint fishing village of Staithes you will find my Grade II listed fisherman's cottage. When I first saw it the words that sprung to mind were "bijou" and "cosy" - I fell in love with it at once! Since buying Lahney Cottage in February 2016, it has undergone a complete refurbishment, with new furniture, equipment, new flooring and carpets throughout, as well as being regularly redecorated throughout. The kitchen is very well equipped, the lounge has a TV with integral DVD player, internet radio with Bluetooth speaker and wi-fi (super fast unlimited broadband). On the first floor you will find the double bedroom and the bathroom with an electric shower over the bath. The cottage has heaters in the rooms and also a fabulous log burner in the lounge. You are seconds from the dog friendly beach and there are three dog friendly pubs in the village. Short term parking is available for unloading and there is car parking available at the top of the village, about a 5 minute walk from the cottage (we do provide a permit for the council Pay & Display car park, but you are not guaranteed a space, so parking charges may apply). Well-behaved dogs are welcome and unlike a lot of properties we don't charge extra, but we do want to know if they will be there, so please make sure you tell us when you book.
The Faith in Nature shower gels, shampoos and hand soaps that we provide are all made with essential oils, are vegan and cruelty free, and are also SLS and paraben free. The cleaning and laundry products we use are also from "eco-friendly" companies - Bio-D and Koh. All are kinder to you and the environment.
Guest access
Please note that apart from the occasional exception (which will be clear on the listing), there is a minimum stay of 3 nights, we do not have a specific changeover day
Other things to note
Like most properties in the old village, Lahney Cottage is not suitable for wheelchairs.
The North York Moors railway is close by, as is "Heartbeat" country including Goathland (or "Aidensfield"), the station of which was also used as Hogwarts Station in the Harry Potter films.
There are plenty of National Trust and English Heritage sites to visit, such as Fountains Abbey and Helmsley Castle - we always used to love it there when our boys were younger, because they couldn't break it!
Dalby Forest has a variety of attractions; as well walking through the beautiful scenery of places like Bridestones Moor, there is the visitors centre, Go Ape, cycle hire and trails.
There is so much more to do and explore, I could write a book on it, but there is plenty of literature in the cottage to help you decide how you would like to spend your time.

We accept guests with children but stress that it is your responsibility to risk assess and safeguard your children as stairs/steps can be a hazard as can other aspects of an old and characterful cottage.
Ours is a:
NO SMOKING accommodation
The space
Located in the middle of the high street, Johnny Reb is the perfect spot for watching the world go by.....
Other things to note
Johnny Reb cottage

(A no-smoking Cottage)
Key safe available for access (number will be shared upon booking)
Other than your clothes, wash bag, food/ingredients to knock up a delicious slap up meal and your beach bag (including swimwear, snorkel, professional bucket and spade and fishing gear) there is nothing else you need to take. We have all essentials there, such as tea and coffee, sugar, salt & pepper, washing-up liquid, cloths and tea towels; which you are more than welcome to use.
We DO NOT have a TV other than DVD player tv in back bedroom
The Cottage
Situated on the right hand side, as you walk down towards the beach, Johnny Reb cottage is next door but one to the Endeavour B&B and just before ‘WorkHorse’ clothing shop. Sleeping four people, there are two kingsize beds on the first floor along with a shower room. There are steps up to the front door and higglety pigglety steps up to the bedrooms and bathroom. There is a shower but no bath tub. Please DO NOT rinse off sandy feet and bodies in the shower as this blocks the u-bend and the drains are ancient in the village. Thank you
Car Parking
BEWARE OF THE PRIVATE CAR PARK AS THEY CHARGE YEAR-ROUND AND ARE CAMERA CONTROLLED!!
You can drive down but the street is narrow and passing is limited but, you are able to drop off and pick up near the cottage so long as you’re quick! You need to then drive to the very bottom (or near the art gallery on the bend) to turn. You can park on the high street, near the sweet shop, overnight 5:30-9:45 for free but spaces are limited and traffic wardens are plentiful...
At the top of the village there is a car park and it is around £7 for 24 hours, free from 1st November-1st March.
If you park at cowbar, there is now a fee
To get to cowbar; from the exit to Staithes, turn right towards Loftus, after the dip you will see a farm on the right and need to turn right directly after that (you will see a sign for Cowbar as you turn) follow the single track road in the direction of Staithes. You will come to a small car park on your left where you can leave the car but move any valuables, just in case as the park is not monitored. Follow the road down, by foot, but take care of kids and dogs as the cliffs are dangerous with no fence but lots of interesting reasons to go near....
You will come to a foot bridge on the right and need to cross this to get back to the high street where you will be back in Staithes.
Water heater
The Switch is located Under the left cupboard of kitchen sink (at the the back, top right hand side!) the heater should be on when you arrive but, just incase…
Radiators & Log burner
Switch on and off by the switch on the side and use the arrow to turn temperature up/down
Please remember to switch off before you leave
DO NOT SWITCH OFF AT THE WALL AS THE PROGRAMME WILL BE AFFECTED
THANK YOU
The log burner is available for your use if required with paper and matches at hand. Logs and kindling are available locally in the village from Tracy on Church Street and also from The Kessen bowl or Betsy & Bo’s shop.
Bedding
You have clean bedding on all beds. A selection of different pillows are available, just choose one that suits your preference.
Oven & Hob
The oven and hob switch is in the cupboard to the left (back, top right)
This is usually left switched ON
Operation instructions are in the drawer under oven as are trays
Dogs
We love dogs and have one of our own, we have chosen to allow a small dog into our cottage and simply ask that fellow dog lovers respect our cottage by keeping your dog off the furniture and beds. We feel dog beds are personal so please bring your dogs bed with you.
The beach
The bay is pretty safe but for your own safety, you must take notice of the warnings of falling rocks. The beach is cleaned often by the caretaker of the village along with conscientious locals but dogs are on the beach daily. Although most owners do clean up after their dogs, you need to chose your sand castle building site wisely.
PLEASE REMOVE ALL SAND BEFORE USING THE SHOWER OR SINKS. THE DRAINS IN STAITHES ARE ANCIENT....!!
The streets
There are lots of hidden streets and ginnels around the corners and you may come across some of the 3D art trail on your adventures.
NOTE
We do NOT have TV other than one for dvds in the back bedroom! We DO NOT have a washing machine or dishwasher (sorry)
