- "A beautiful cottage in a secluded area with lovely views of surrounding hills and forest. The photos dont do it justice, it is much bigger in reality. It is very well equipped, and beds very comfortable with spotless linen. Even in cold weather, the cottage has more than enough radiators and a very efficient log burner to keep you warm. Perfectly located for trips to kielder ; Alnwick and the coast are also within easy reach. The owner, Simon is very welcoming and a font of knowledge about the area. Guests can escape the hustle and bustle in this charming, fully furnished stone cottage. The Parlour has been lovingly renovated into a perfect place for relaxing after a day’s exploring of the local area.
The Parlour sits in the heart of village of Acomb, just outside the market town of Hexham. Acomb comes from the Anglo Saxon word ‘akum’ meaning ‘place of the oaks’. Acomb is the focal point for a number of beautiful walks and cycle routes. Popular walks include Acomb to Watersmeet, a designated site of special scientific interest for the flora and fauna, and Acomb to Heavenfield, the site of a historic battle as well as the beautiful St Oswald’s church. A Roman stone carving sits a stone’s throw from the Parlour and St John Lee Church is a 10 minute walk away along a tree lined bridleway. The village also has three pubs, all with beer gardens, a fish and chip shop and a convenience shop (inside the Queen’s Arms pub).
The Parlour offers all the modern conveniences like high speed Internet, Netflix, underfloor heating, Sage espresso machine and USB charging sockets in every room while also showcasing its history as a milking parlour, which saw cows entering through the front door to be milked until the 1980s.
The Parlour is ideal for a couple or small family. The principle bedroom has a king size bed and is located on the ground floor. On the mezzanine there are two low single beds under the eaves. The mezzanine overlooks the living and dining area and is accessible up a narrow staircase (not suitable for those with mobility issues or very young children).
Everything guests need to enjoy a perfect stay has been considered from access to a secure place to store bicycles to a dedicated laundry room both of which are located just behind the Parlour. The laundry room contains a washing machine, tumble dryer, clothes basket and laundry products. And for those needing to mix work with leisure, there are seat cushions to make sitting and working more comfortable, as well as spare USB cables, note pad, pens and plenty of coffee and tea!
Whether you want to settle down in front of the wood burning stove, plan your next day’s adventure with the framed OS map or sit on the patio, pour a drink, and watch the world go by, you’ll want to stay at the Parlour ‘til the cows come home’.
- "Perfect for a lone traveller with some mobility issues to have a bedroom and shower room on the ground floor. Useful supplies of milk, tea coffee and a Nespresso machine. Toiletries supplied for the bathroom. The bed was extremely comfortable and I slept well. A guide book to the cottage contained lots of useful information to the cottage and surrounding area. It was a very relaxing couple of days and I hope to be back next year. Thank you Claire for making it so pleasant."

Stayed for my wife's 40th, as she just wanted to get away and spend some time with her family exploring around the area, Hadrian's Wall, Cragside and the Lake District. This cottage was perfectly situated to visit all three, and we had a great time! Only downside was it was cloudy every night, so we didn't get to do a bit of star gazing, which this area is known for. Overall we really enjoyed our stay at this lovely cottage!"

- "What a lovely house - very spacious, comfortable, well equipped and immaculately clean throughout. The garden was lovely and it was really peaceful and quiet. Only 5 mins from the dark skies observatory, it was also in a perfect location for us!" - "We booked this property because it was literally a couple of minutes from our long awaited Star Gazing vacation at Kielder Observatory. I was hoping the property was going to be nice beacuse it was also part of a 60th Birthday treat. What a lovely surprise when it exceeded all our expectations. The property has been thoughtfully laid out and was really clean and cosy. The sitting room was large and airy and had lots of comforatble seating - in particular a reclining sofa which encouraged us to sit back and relax. The sitting room also had expansive sliding doors onto the garden so you could watch the wildlife and enjoy the country location. The owners are an absolute delight and responded quickly to any questions we had - we really got the feeling that they genuinley wanted us to have a lovely stay. We will definately be going back."

The village has two small shops, a pub and an award winning "green' restaurant. It is situated within the 'dark sky' zone and has a local observatory. The cottage is the perfect place to explore something different every day or to snuggle up, cook and read. The cottage has good wifi but no television.

The space
Black Reiver Bothy is set in the midst of a sheep farming community.
This is a significant part of the reason that we specify no dogs.
You will be in the small hamlet of Donkleywood, 1.5 miles from the nearest village of Falstone which has a pub and a tea room.
The road between Falstone and Donkleywood is single track with no marked passing places and no street lighting.
The larger village of Bellingham is about 10 miles, 20 minutes, drive away and has a small, but well stocked Co-op, a pharmacy a petrol station, an 18 hole golf course and a number of pubs and cafes.
There are a number of design features in the cottage which make it less suitable for younger guests. For that reason I do not accept bookings for groups including children under 12 years of age.

It will be your home away from home throughout your stay.
