The receptionist gave us a welcome that was so friendly and enthusiastic, it put most other hotels to shame. While the room was quite small and the bathroom shared (as we'd expected), it was nice and warm, giving us an instant boost on a cold night, and the bed was extremely comfortable. The location couldn't have been better, with a range of decent restaurants within a short walking distance. There was a large kitchen and common room area with free tea, coffee and popcorn, outside there was a hot tub you could use up till 10pm, and the atmosphere overall felt more like we were staying a high-end hotel than somewhere cheap, even though we'd paid just £28 for two people. I would heartily recommend this lodge."

Come and stay in our brand new north facing modern home located just 5 minutes from the town of Franz Josef within the Franz Alpine Resort. Take in the Glacier Country mountains and view of Lake Mapourika.

The kitchen, dining and lounge area are open plan, sliding doors open to a large deck that runs the length of the house. The kitchen is equipped with the basics tools to prepare meals.

The main bedroom, with ensuite, adjoins the lounge. The other two bedrooms share the other bathroom. All bedrooms have sliding doors onto the deck.

The holiday house caters for a maximum of six guests.

It is heated and cooled with a heat pump and two panel heaters.

Cell phone coverage on the Spark network is limited at the property. Fibre broadband is not expected in Franz Josef until December 2020, connections can be slow.

Guests are able to access the whole property. This is not shared accommodation, it is not a motel/hotel and there is no onsite management. Help or advice on the area is available by phone or email.

Cleaning:
The cleaning fee covers the professionally cleaned linen and routine housekeeping between guests. Please leave the house tidy, place all rubbish in the bins provided. Clean, dry and store all kitchenware you have used and load rinsed dishes into the dishwasher.

Getting around:
Franz Josef has no public transport options around the township. The property is located 5km north in Franz Alpine Resort, your own vehicle is required. There is a carport available for one vehicle, a second can fit on the driveway. There is also parking available on the street next to the property.

The neighbourhood:
The neighbourhood is very peaceful. It is rural surrounded by rainforest clad mountains. Please respect this and keep noise to a minimum.

This large holiday house has all the space you need for a great family break. The house is fully self-contained with a large open plan kitchen and living room. 3 large bedroom each feature either a king bed or 2 single beds. There is one bathroom with a shower. In the large garden you will find a large 6 person hot and bubbly spa pool & a huge trampoline for the kids plus there is plenty of space for the kids to burn off some steam.

The Lake House is perched on the edge of a small lake (swimming pool), fed by a pristine mountain stream. Revel in abundant wildlife, luxury and comfort as you unwind amidst panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, Croz Glacier, the majestic Fritz waterfall, sensational sunsets and lush rainforest, all framed by large picture windows and reflective lake vistas. The lake (natural swimming pool) invites you for a summer swim straight off the deck or a refreshing plunge after enjoying the wood-fired sauna. The water is clean and unless there has been a big storm is usually clear so you can see the bottom. It is beautiful to swim in in summer. Drift off to sleep with the soothing sounds of the mountain stream feeding the lake. There is one small 2-person cabin at the other end of the lake, positioned for privacy for guests staying at The Lake House and vice versa.

Inside, The Lake House is tastefully adorned with brass fittings, stone-carved basins, stone benchtops, fully tiled bathrooms and sumptuous leather furnishings. In cooler months, warm up by the roaring fire, with a full stock of wood and fire-starting materials provided and ready to light upon your arrival.

Each of the two bedrooms has its own attached ensuite. The bedrooms are located on opposite ends of the house.

You are welcome to swim in the lake (please no diving as it is not very deep in some places). You engage in these activities at your own risk. Follow the road behind the house that leads down to a rugged river that you are welcome to explore. You have access to the entire Lake House, sauna and immediate surroundings.

Please note that this is a brand-new Lake House and we are in the early stages of landscaping.

FAQ

What do I have to be conscious of when staying in a solar-powered Lake House?

THIS IS AN OFF THE GRID SOLAR POWERED LAKEHOUSE :) Relying on the sun for power is part of the experience of staying in this luxury eco lake house. Whilst staying here, particularly if the weather is bad and there is not much sun - you will need to be conscious of your power use. This is why we ask guests to avoid using the oven and cook using the gas stove instead on days that are not sunny, you will boil your water with a traditional whistling kettle on the gas stove and we do not provide high-power-use appliances such as hairdryers, curling tongs and straighteners and we ask that these items are not used during your stay so as to avoid running out of power. As the batteries cannot keep up with these high-energy appliances.

The only source of heating is the wood-fire which we will have prepared for you upon arrival along with plenty of kindling, fire starters and wood to keep warm.

Our barrel sauna is also wood-fired. We provide instructions on how to use and are only a message away.

What happens if the power runs out?

This is a rare occurrence however it may happen if we get an unusually long spell of rainy days compared to what we would typically experience on the West Coast or if power use has not been regulated during your stay (e.g. use of a hair dryer for example).

We are about 600 meters down a gravel road off the state highway (note you may need to navigate a few potholes) and this is suitable for 2WD cars.
