Bear Valley family fun in the trees
Cabin
Bear Valley, California, USA

Classic a-frame cabin in Bear Valley. Swim, fish and hike in the summer. Downhill and cross-country ski in the winter.

Three stories - upstairs loft has queen bed and two singles. One bedroom on main floor has a double bed. Other bedroom on main floor has four twins in two bunk beds. Downstairs studio has another double including small second kitchen and second bathroom. Main floor includes kitchen, bathroom, couch with 2 rollouts, dining booth and living room with fireplace, large windows with view of trees and open floor plan - sliding glass doors open onto deck.

Come enjoy the tranquility of high Sierra mountain forest in the summer. Nearby lakes and rivers offer swimming, fishing and kayaking.

In the winter, you will find yourself in a true winter wonderland. The roads aren't plowed, access is by snowmobile. You will need to arrange your transport in and out with snowmobile either by renting your own or reserving a taxi ride with a local snowmobile company. We have a snowmobile taxi service that we can recommend (the good news that he is generally flexible with hours, within reason and with advance notice) -- if you need a snowmobile taxi, it is $50 per hour. In good snow years, you can ski to the shuttle to Bear Valley ski resort and then ski back at the end of the day. Bear Valley village is just a 15 minute walk away (about 5-6 blocks). It is easy and beautiful to walk.

Come enjoy this comfortable cabin in a unique mountain setting.

Guest Reviews:

- "Easy access to skiing at Bear Valley resort and space for all to sleep." - "rented a sled to get around, very refreshing." - "I stayed here while attending a wedding at the lodge down the street. The house was clean and accommodating, and was a very short drive (about a 5-10 minute walk) from the lodge. The lake was nearby too, but I didn’t have time to check it out." - "We stayed in this cabin for a corporate offsite. Many of the decorations are a throw-back to an earlier time period. Excellent wifi, new-ish appliances, great sound system, clean though rustic. Only one issue, owner said no outside fires (this due to recent wildfires)."

Guest Reviews:

- "The Ames Family enjoyed another wonderful trip to Bear Valley. We have enjoyed our summers there for more than 40 years and expect to be back again next year. Thank you for your helpful and warm hospitality. Appreciate you taking the time to put my Bear Valley sweatshirt in the mail. Have a wonderful winter and we’ll see you all next year!" - "Great service. Take care of issues promptly. Enjoyed our stay." - "Our family gathering of 11 adults and kids fit perfectly in this older cabin as the 5 bedrooms on 3 floors allowed plenty of space and privacy. We made good use of the secondary kitchen downstairs, especially the fridge! The deep leather couches and good size dining table accommodated us comfortably, and we enjoyed eating at the long table on the deck. The parking area even fit all 5 of our cars! We had a great time swimming at Lake Alpine, took a hike to Duck Lake, and had 2 fun rounds of disc golf. Best of all we were able to bring the pups along on our holiday. This may not be the fanciest cabin in Bear Valley, but it is a very usable one."

The only Bear Valley lakefront + beachfront cabin with ski in-out access
Cabin
Bear Valley, California, USA

This is the only Bear Valley cabin for rent with a lakefront + beachfront location, making it perfect for summer/water fun.

In winter, never touch your car and enjoy ski in/out access to Bear Valley resort. If you’re new to Bear Valley be aware that once the village roads close snowmobiles are the only vehicles allowed and you may want to book a snowmobile taxi.

**GUEST SNOWMOBILE (interest check): For winter ’25–’26 we’re considering making available a snowmobile for guest personal shuttle‑only use (village roads to/from the cabin). A fee and safety rules would apply. Interested? Message us so we can gauge demand. Thanks**

Designed by SF Bay Bridge architect Donald McDonald, the Lake Chalet is ideal for relaxation and outdoor adventures for up to three families.

Come discover this charming, two-story cabin with 3 bedrooms, a large kids loft, two bathrooms, cozy fireplace, decks and BBQ grill, and great views.

Know before you book: the cozy loft is accessed by a vertical ladder (please see the photo with our 3 yr old climbing it; best for kids/ladder-comfortable adults; not recommended for seniors or those with mobility concerns). Our scenic mountain neighborhood includes a steep driveway typical of the area; standard/AWD vehicles handle it well. We welcome dogs at the cabin, and around Bear Valley, but the community beach and lake have HOA rules that do not allow dogs on the sand or in the water (this is a community policy that applies to all homes on the lake).

LAKE and BEACH

During the summer, swimming, fishing, boating (non-motorized) and other water activities are popular. The cabin is also located just above a small beach that is suitable for all ages. Kids are within earshot of the cabin, and the shallow water off this beach makes it a relatively safe play area for young ones.

SLEEPING:

This cabin was designed to comfortably accommodate three families with children. The cabin is approximately 2,000 sq. feet and total sleeping capacity is twelve (12) people. The three (3) downstairs bedrooms feature two king size beds and one queen. The mattresses are new and high quality (eg Tempur-Pedic, Purple). The three downstairs bedrooms can suitably accommodate six (6) adults in total.

The upstairs sleeping loft can accommodate at least 6 children (or 5-6 adults) on two high-quality queen size mattresses, and two stackable Ikea single beds. The loft is accessible via dual ladders located on either side of the living room wood stove and feature trap doors that can be lowered for added safety.

BATHROOMS:

Two (2) separate bathrooms, each featuring a toilet, sink, and shower.

KITCHEN and DINING:

Kitchen includes the following features and appliances:

Bertazzoni electric induction stove and oven, full-size Summit refrigerator, Asko dishwasher, coffee machine and French press, microwave, toaster, mixer/blender, ice cream making machine, stovetop tea kettle, etc. Off the kitchen are an Asko washer & dryer.

The lakeside deck features a new Z Grills 2025 Smoke Beast 10502B Pellet Grill and BBQ tools.

The indoor dining table can accommodate ten (10) people. There is a breakfast bar and stools and additional table seating on the outside decks.

INTERNET and TV and BACKUP POWER

The cabin features high-speed/low-latency Starlink satellite internet service, suitable for video work calls, gaming, TV streaming, etc. The cabin also has a Tesla Powerwall 3 whole-house backup battery that should be able to provide Internet/electrical for approximately 24-48 hours (depending on use) during a grid outage. There is an additional Jackery Explorer 700 Plus Portable Power Station backup battery as well.

The internet connected TV is located in the loft and you can use our existing Amazon Prime Video and Plex services, as well as sign into your own accounts (eg Netflix).

WOOD BURNING STOVE and HEATING

We have a Vermont Castings wood burning stove, which utilizes all the renewable and freely available firewood sourced from Bear Valley’s fire risk mitigation efforts. The wood stove is capable of generating sufficient warmth to heat the entire cabin throughout winter nights.

We also have central heating as well as heating options available in each bedroom to ensure a comfy night of sleep.

Guest Reviews:

- "Bear Lake is really like On Golden Pond in the Sierra's. This home is archectecturally very interesting, and in a perfect spot for peace and quiet. It was built in the 1960's, and so some parts of the home could use a little updating (bathrooms need updating but kitchen is more than fine), but some parts of the home's design are timeless and very well done. We could have sat in the living room and looked at the fabulous view all day. Some warnings - 1) the driveway up to the property is incredibly steep and twisty - if the weather is wet or there is any snow, you may have a bit of a struggle to make it up. 2) the 'loft area' is perfect for young kids who have the energy and skills to climb up and down vertical ladders and narrow access spaces - but I assure you no adults will be doing this. The 3 bedrooms are perfect downstairs, though. This is a fabulous location (might be one of the top 2-3 places on the lake) and a very interesting home. We would definitely stay there again, and look forward to visiting."

The Lake Chalet
Cabin
Bear Valley

Only Bear Valley rental cabin with a lake + beachfront location. Perfect for summer/water fun.

In winter, never touch your car and enjoy ski in-out access to the resort (conditions/skill level permitting).

Designed by SF Bay Bridge architect Don McDonald, the Lake Chalet is ideal for relaxation and outdoor adventures for up to three families (eg 6 adults + 6 kids).

Discover our 2-level cozy cabin: 3 bedrooms, large loft, two bathrooms, rustic-modern interior & amenities, decks and views!

The space
LAKE and BEACH

During summer popular water activities include: swimming, fishing, boating (non-motorized), SUP, etc.

The cabin is also located just above a small beach that is suitable for all ages. Kids are within earshot of the cabin's decks and windows, and the very shallow water immediately off this beach makes it a relatively safe play area for young ones.

SKI IN - SKI OUT

In the winter, never touch your car and enjoy ski in-out access to Bear Valley resort. You can ski down from the cabin to a free 10-minute bus shuttle that runs every hour, on the hour. You can also ski from the resort directly to the cabin via the intermediate “Lunch Run” trail. (Please independently confirm this trail is open and that trail conditions match your skiing level.)

There are some other runs like Home Run, Apple Bonkers, etc that get you from the resort to the north side of Bear Valley Lake. However, unlike Lunch Run these routes may be more advanced and require some hiking / uphill skiing to get back to the cabin (cabin is located on the southwest corner of the lake).

Please see the “Other details” section for a discussion of winter parking and snowmobile taxi access to the cabin.

SLEEPING:

This cabin was designed to comfortably accommodate three families with children. The cabin is approximately 2,000 sq. feet and total sleeping capacity is twelve (12) people.

The three (3) downstairs bedrooms offer privacy and feature one king size bed and two queens, respectively. The mattresses are new and high quality (eg Tempur-Pedic). The three downstairs bedrooms can suitably accommodate six (6) adults in total.

The upstairs sleeping loft can easily accommodate at least six (6) children (or adults) on two high quality / new queen size mattresses, and two single beds. The loft is accessible via dual ladders on both sides of the wood stove.

In terms of ladder loft-access & safety, we generally recommend keeping the trap door above the floor furnace closed and just using the other ladder closer to the entrance. Trap doors can be closed above both ladders for added safety. We and other families have been comfortable with three year-olds and up climbing unassisted up/down the ladder, and we have included a photo in the listing of our 3-year old at the top of the ladder. However, we understand other parents may feel differently. Please feel free to inquire if you have any questions.

BATHROOMS:

Two (2) separate bathrooms, each featuring a toilet, sink, and shower.

KITCHEN and DINING:

Kitchen includes the following:

full-size refrigerator, electric induction stovetop and oven, dishwasher, hand coffee grinder, French press, coffee machine, stovetop tea kettle, loose-leaf tea strainers, microwave, toaster, hand mixer/blender, ice cream making machine, etc.

The lakeside deck features a Weber BBQ and BBQ tools (please bring your own charcoal and BBQ lighter fluid/starter).

The indoor dining table can accommodate ten (10) people. There are two breakfast bar stools and additional tables and seating on the outside deck.

INTERNET and TV

The cabin features high-speed/low latency Starlink satellite internet service, suitable for video work calls, gaming, TV streaming, etc.

The internet connected TV is located in the loft and you can use our existing Amazon Video and Plex app services, as well as sign into your own apps/accounts (eg Netflix).

WOOD STOVE and HEATING

We have a new Vermont Castings enameled cast-iron wood stove, utilizing renewable and freely available firewood sourced from local fire risk mitigation efforts.

We also have central heating (propane floor furnace), as well as heating options available in each bedroom to ensure warm, comfy nights.

Guest access
Entire house except under cabin crawl space, which is just for utilities and owner storage.

Other things to note
WINTER ACCESS

Please be aware during winter the cabin is snowbound: each year, after sufficient snow has fallen, the village roads beyond the Lodge that lead to the cabins are closed to cars. These roads remain open to snowmobiles and the “side-by-side” snowmobile taxi service, skiers, sleds, walking, etc.

You can ski down beginner friendly and gently sloping Bear Valley Rd from the cabin to your car or to the free bus shuttle to the ski resort, which runs every hour on the hour. The bus shuttle conveniently drops off right at the resort lodge entrance and we generally recommend it over driving to avoid parking hassle/long parking lot walks/fees. During the busiest times and holidays, it can be worth getting to the shuttle 15-20 minutes early as it does fill up.

To get back to the cabin, you can avoid returning by vehicle by skiing the intermediate “Lunch Run” all the way from the top of the resort back to the cabin. There are also more advanced trails like “Home Run” but these may require some hiking/uphill skiing to get to the cabin. If you are counting on this ski-back option as part of your stay, please be sure to a) research whether these trails are open and b) check your skiing level is suitable for the trail difficulty and current conditions.

There is free parking around both the village and resort lodges. For the village lodge, be sure to check the signs for your parking lot for time slots when your car will need to be moved to allow snow plowing. There is a recorded phone number in our welcome guide that you can call to check to see if plowing is scheduled; it is canceled unless sufficient fresh snow has fallen.

NEW: One change we are expecting and excited about for the ‘25-‘26 winter season is a new snowmobile taxi service planned with an enclosed/heated “side-by-side” rather than the traditional open-air snowmobile taxi. And the new driver, Nate, has assured us that they can drive guests all the way to the front door to drop-off at the cabin entrance. Most guests book two taxis during their stay — one for arrival, one for departure — to help with hauling luggage, and then just ski, sled, hike, etc the rest of their visit.

The cabin is approximately one mile up a gentle uphill groomed road from the village lodge and can be walked in regular boots (snowshoes not typically required) in about 15-20 minutes. There are sleds in the closet to the left of the entry door that can be used for hauling items if needed.

Airbnb‘s system blocks us from including the snowmobile taxi phone numbers here, but you can call the Snowmobile Rental Center and they should be able to provide you with Nate’s phone number for the snowmobile taxi.

SNOWSTORM ACCESS

Please be aware that Bear Valley winter snowfall can be quite dramatic! We’ll always work to arrange driveway grooming for the cabin, help coordinate snowmobile taxis, and entryway snow shoveling when needed.

However, we cannot always guarantee easy winter access. For example, in some extreme instances you may even need to shovel snow yourself to gain entry into the cabin. We understand not everyone will appreciate these added challenges and mention these possibilities in the hope of avoiding any unwelcome surprises.

CLEANING and LAST MINUTE CANCELING

The cabin is located in the least densely populated county in the state of California. During the winter in particular, cabin access can bring added challenges for all, including our wonderful house cleaning service.

In the case of a guest canceling their reservation a short time before check-in, please be aware that we may not always be able to refund cleaning fees.

There is also a detailed checkout list available on premise that includes removing the trash, completely turning off the heat, emptying the dishwasher, returning furniture to original locations, etc. Our house cleaning service will charge us for any incomplete checkout items (eg $25 per bag of trash left on premise) and we will need to pass these charges onto guests. Thank you for your understanding and please let us know if you need more details.

We look forward to hosting your stay at the Lake Chalet and please be sure to message if you have any questions. Thank you!

The kitchen is small with original rustic cabinetry, but fully stocked with everything you could need for cooking delicious meals! All-Clad pots and pans, high quality Henkles knives, etc. A weber grill is also available on the patio.

Thanksgiving weekend is open, three night minimum.

All rentals include use of my snowmobile, strictly for going to and from the house. (With waivers stating your responsibility for any accidents or damages.)

There's no predicting snowfall but the neighborhood roads are generally closed by late December.

All rates include 14% TOT
Short Term Rental Permit #2023-275

The space
Most quiet during the spring thaw, when "The snow is melting into music." (John Muir) Wildflowers abounding in July and August, adding to the view for hiking and water sports. Glorious warm days and golden aspens in the Autumn.

Winter brings the full California ski experience. Once there's a good base of snow, the roads in the residential area are closed and groomed, so no cars are allowed to enter, and everything remains completely white.

The snowmobile ride up from the village adds to the adventure! Road's end location is perfect for sledding.

The two bedrooms, each with an adjoining full bath, are on the entry level. The master bedroom has a wood stove and panoramic views. It has a king-size bed and a twin. The smaller bedroom has a twin bed, and also a trundle bed which can be used as one or two twins. The whole second story is one large room, with a wood stove and windows all around. It has a half bath and futons for four.

The second story is all one big room with windows all around and panoramic mountain and forest views to the south and east.

There is a hiking trail up to Bloods Point and across the ridge down to the ski area starting just to the right of my driveway.

Guest access
Entry to the house includes a short downhill path from the driveway, interspersed with Railroad Tie steps. In the winter the path may be covered with snow and may include steps cut into the snow near the house during heavier snowfall.
A mountain adventure--wear boots!

Once Bear Valley gets enough snow in the winter, the residential roads are closed to cars and groomed for over snow travel. Then the limited use of a snowmobile (strictly for transportation to and from the house--not for recreation) is included in the rental price. Please contact owner for further information and requirements.

Guests have the entire house plus the cellar which is well stocked with firewood and tools for spitting kindling. The very private second story deck faces south with only one house down below in your view.

Other things to note
For entry in the snow: The highway up to Bear Valley (CA Hwy 4) doesn't reach higher elevations until about the last 20 minutes of the drive. It is kept well-cleared most of the time. Bear Valley is on the west side of the summit, so there are no scary cliffs to navigate! Please do check driving conditions and carry chains when advised.

The space
We LOVE the mountains and we used to rent one week every summer so the family could be together. As the family grew, we had trouble finding rentals to accommodate our size group (20). We decided as a family to look for a retreat and came across this hidden gem. When we first saw this house, the area felt like a winter wonderland. Pictures could not do the view justice. We decided that this was the perfect project for our family and we began some renovations immediately and are continuing to update and renovate parts of the cabin. We love this place and we hope you do too!
