Hungry Packer is a cabin that sits on the five-acre mill site of what was once a roaring gold mine from 1895 - 1936! Hungry Packer used to house miners!
This cabin is located in the Aspendell community, above Bishop, CA; and it’s tucked in among thirteen other cabins.
In 1946, the abandoned gold mine was turned into Cardinal Village, an ever popular fishing destination.
The space
Cardinal Village has been under the stewardship of the Cluff Family since 1985. The resort is open for its “regular” season from the end of April - the end of October every year. During this “regular” season, all fourteen cabins are open, our Cardinal Cafe is open, and the General Store is open.
For this winter season or “off-season,” you’ll find the resort quiet + a peaceful retreat into the wilderness.
Hungry Packer is one of four cabins we have open during this “off-season.”
We do receive quite a bit of snowfall; CalTrans does plow Highway 168 regularly, but please message us to find out the amount of snow at the time of booking.
Guest access
This is your own private cabin. Our General Store and Cardinal Cafe are closed until the end of April.
You have a parking space in front of your cabin. You’ll parallel park in front of the cabin.
Snow is likely, so a 4WD vehicle is highly suggested.
Other things to note
WiFi is available at the main lodge — NOT at your cabin — but it’s not high-speed. It is suggested to download any movies and TV shows you might want to watch during your stay.
We do have security cameras at the main lodge, facing the parking lot and facing the front lawn.
