The Writer's Cabin, Jacuzzi, Fireplace, in Town!
Cabin
Grand Marais, Minnesota, USA

The Writer's Cabin is a quaint, long established residence hidden in the oldest part of town. It has been fully restored and modernized to provide all the creature comforts and yet remain historic in nature. This is an original "Tiny home" as it was originally constructed nearly 100 years ago. We did expand the bath to accommodate the jacuzzi, and we raised the ceilings and brightened the entire cabin. A sauna is available on a first come first serve basis for an additional fee. Contact us for details. The Writer's Cabin is set amidst lush landscaping for privacy, and the cabin is only steps from the harbor. All amenities are provided including an enameled cast iron gas fireplace, a therapeutic air tub for two, a queen bed, a well equipped modern kitchen with oven and stove, smart Roku TV, an antique secretary writing desk, high speed wireless internet (best in town), and various objects of interest representative of famous writers and local writers including locally written books and Ernest Hemmingway's favorite model of typewriter. A sauna is available for a fee on a first come first serve basis and all info on it can be found on our web site or inquire with us here. Attention Air BnB guests: If you paid the dog fee through Air BnB it only covers one dog, you will be responsible to contact the cabin owner to pay for any 2nd dog. We do not recommend more than 2 guests in the Writer's Cabin, it has one queen bed and one non fold out sofa. The base rate included 2 guests and additional guests are $30 per guest up to 3 maximum. 4 guests are possible but it is going to be crowded. Dogs are $100 per dog with a maximum of 2 dogs. The property is kept exceptionally clean and we try to remove all evidence of dog hair between stays. Our cleaners work very hard to remove all evidence of dogs and that takes time and effort and we appreciate anything you can do to help.

With nine windows and one skylight, there is great natural light throughout the little cabin.

Seagulls and fog greet you when you rise.

This is simply a spectacular location right in the historic residential heart of Grand Marais very close to the harbor- yet still private and relatively quiet compared almost anywhere else in bustling town of Grand Marais. We are not on a busy street or on highway 61. You are perfectly positioned to discover the town and participate in the small town buzz.

The outdoor space has a balanced blend of sun and shade, functionality and whimsicality. This is a space intended as an exclusive retreat from the rigors of small town life. It is designed so that you can be as private as your vacation requires. Dense shrubs, apple trees and tall fences ensure your own seclusion. The feeling is that of a secret retreat just off the main avenues.

We love dogs. Dogs are allowed at this property with your acceptance of our dog rules and payment of the fee. No dogs under 1 year old. Each pet fee is good for one dog. $100 per dog per stay and it is the guest's responsibility to ensure payment of the fee and to be familiar with our dog rules. No cats or other creatures :-). Dogs are not allowed on furniture without a fresh, clean blanket that you provide that they can not scratch away. Dogs must be kept in portable kennels if you are not present.

Lastly, we recommend you consider trip insurance- especially in winter, or if you are taking classes that may be cancelled. We have discounted our rates on our direct website by an additional 7% (the total savings between our direct site and say... another famous site is now 14-21% but only if you book on our direct site). We are doing this so that you may select trip insurance during your booking process. It will be offered to you while you are completing your booking and they charge 7%. We do not make any money on that. The cancellation policy we have had for 10 years is as follows:

You may cancel within 48 hours of your booking transaction for any reason. After that you can cancel with a 10% penalty up until 60 days prior to your arrival. After that you may cancel but your deposit can not be refunded.

If you have trip insurance you can be reimbursed according to which policy you chose. And we are subsidizing it for you by having reduced our rental rates well below any other rates where our properties can be found. It's up to you, pocket the savings and run the risk of cancellation, or still get some savings and have the peace of mind of having some of your investment in your vacation protected in case of unforeseen events. Here is a link to the insurance company, otherwise it is all presented to you when you book so that you can make an informed decision at that time: https://cdn.orez.io/sc/content/docs/RentalGuardian%20-%20Overview.pdf?v=0116da11ea74cfb3b939b87f3a2c5dc676da5f83

Guest Reviews:

- "Booked for next year already." - "Great location for walking through the town. Quiet, yet convenient. Private. Comfortable lodging. Bedroom is a little tight. The hosts were very communicative and gave us great information for in town hiking. This was our first time in Grand Marais and we are missing it all ready." - "Perhaps not the most scenic location in Grand Marais, but certainly a cozy getaway within walking walking distance to all the great attractions. If you're looking for a little solitude in the middle of Grand Marais, this is the spot. Met our needs and was a great stay."

Artisan-crafted Magic on Lake Superior between Lutsen and Grand Marais
Cabin
Lutsen, Minnesota, USA

Nestled along the bank of Lake Superior's rugged coastline, right at the very end of Cascade Beach Road, WoodSong is situated at the edge of Cascade River State Park and almost exactly between Lutsen and Grand Marais — easy 10-minute drives in either direction. Completely rebuilt, this artisan-crafted cabin was spared no expense in its attention to detail. From the overall design to the hand-forged forged ironwork, painstaking care was given to every square inch. The result is something more akin to a crafted wood sculpture than a mere dwelling. A spacious main room is built around the granite-faced wood-burning fireplace with French doors that open directly out to the Big Lake. Each of its 2 bedrooms has its own, private spa-like bath, complete with deep soaking tub.

Outside, the charm is in full force … Not only is WoodSong's patio a stone's throw from Lake Superior's lapping waves, but it also has a lake-side covered porch. Repurposed from an original, historic North Shore fish house — one of the few that remain standing from that bygone era — time with coffee, wine, and friends is about as close to North Shore ecstasy as it gets! As idyllic as WoodSong is, the cabin itself is only the beginning …

WoodSong is situated in the heart of the most legendary and spectacular section of the entire North Shore. Hundreds of miles of Sawtooth Mountains trails (hiking in the summer, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter) are accessible right out the front door of the cabin. - "Lovely cabin and we’ll designed/appointed. Owners/managers are very attentive to your needs. The fish house was great place for morning coffee and being lulled by the waves. I stayed almost 2 weeks here. Only downsides are the traffic noise, Canadian Geese in the yard and flies. Welcome to the North Shore." - "Our stay was absolutely perfect. Guest Reviews:

- "Very nice cabin right on the shore of Lake Superior. So nice to be right by the waves and have a campfire right on the shore! Will definitely return!" - "Lake shore tranquility. Quiet. Listen to the waves while you sleep. Owner is very responsive to any questions. 2 state parks very close. Would stay again." - "Awesome place! Really enjoyed it" - "We enjoyed our stay immensely!" - "We loved our visit! The cabin was all we hoped it would be. It was so peaceful. We loved having our coffee outside in the morning, enjoying the Lake and a glass of wine in the evening. The cabin was spotless and the beds were comfortable. We would have enjoyed a more comfortable chair in the living room to relax in. A safety bar in the shower would be good. The floor of the showers gets slippery. We are already taking about a return visit."

The inspiration for Gaucho Cabin came from our time spent living in Argentina, which is where our story together began. Our hope is that travelers can enjoy the same serenity from nature in this rustic refuge that our journey’s brought us.

To Our Canadian Friends, Grand Marais has always been a place where communities come together, and for years, Canadians have been an essential part of this town’s heart and spirit. Your presence, your stories, and your love for the North Shore make this place even more special.

As a small way of showing our gratitude, we’re offering a discount to our Canadian guests. We know times aren’t easy, and we want to make it a little lighter for you to visit a place that has felt like home for so many.

We’d love to welcome you back—whether it’s for a quiet retreat, an adventure in the woods, or just time to breathe in the lake air.

FAQ:

Is this cabin for everyone? — Not exactly… We want to be clear that this is an off-grid cabin that was meant to be used as a rustic retreat.

Is the bed upstairs? — Yes. The bed is located in the high loft which can only be accessed by a steep ladder. Guests use at their own risk.

Is there Wifi or cell network service? — There is some cell signal. Verizon tends to have much better reception than At&t or T-Mobile.
There is no wifi… some say for an even better connection :)

What is a “dry” cabin? — This means you will be completely off-grid: solar-powered lighting & charging, plumbing free, outhouse, etc.

What about water? — We provide drinking water in larger jugs May-October. Guests will need to bring any drinking or wash water November - April. We have a small creek in spring and rain barrels in summer months for collecting wash water. In winter snow can be melted for wash water.

What is your bathroom situation? — We have an A-frame outhouse just next to the cabin and a wood fired sauna most guests use as a means for showering. Guests who would prefer a little more water pressure can consider visiting the Grand Marais Rec park for a $4 shower, or buy a $10 day-pass to the Grand Marais YMCA to take advantage of the gym, workout facility, showers, hot tub, sauna, and pool.

Fire Pit & Grill? — Yes, May through Oct. We have a charcoal BBQ. Guests will need to bring charcoal and lighter fluid. There is also a fire pit. Wood bundles can be bought in town. Guests are free to use fire pit year round but are responsible for snow removal to use it if they wish to do so.

Do you have a coffee maker? — We have a pour over and filters for your use.

How remote is the cabin? — The cabin is easily accessed (approx. 300 ft) just off Hwy 61 on a maintained driveway. Your views are woods, nature & Lake Superior. While this cabin is completely private, there are neighbors several hundred feet through the woods. However, just as most cabins close to Lake Superior, you could have some road noise.

Winter Conditions:
We recommend AWD/4WD vehicle from Nov 1 to April 30. 2 wheel drive vehicles are free to use the parking at the bottom of the driveway (300ft from cabin). Due to plowing shortages we cannot guarantee that the road will be plowed on a daily basis.

We have 2 parking spots available at the bottom of the driveway in the case that guests are uncomfortable with driving the steep hill or that the conditions are unfavorable to do so. It is approximately a 300ft walk up to the cabin from the bottom of the driveway.

Pets
:
* Only one well-behaved and trained dog per cabin reservation is permitted, subject to an additional nightly fee. The dog must be over 12 months old and fully trained—no exceptions.

If your dog is likely to bark excessively or cause damage, we request that you leave them at home to help us continue offering dog-friendly accommodations. The credit card used for the reservation will be charged for any damages. If your dog exhibits excessive barking, disruptive behavior, we may ask you to leave without a refund and will not be allowed for future reservations.

* Ensure your dog is included in the reservation and that the pet fee is paid before arrival. Bringing a dog that is not listed on your reservation will result in a $250 fine in addition to the nightly pet rate.
* Dogs cannot be left alone in the cabin or on the property under any circumstances. We have wildlife in the area that is dangerous to dogs and can be fatal if left alone. If you’re unsure about your dog's behavior, please arrange for a pet sitter. Pet fees are non-refundable.
* Dogs are not allowed in lofted areas, beds, or furniture. Please remember to pack your dog’s cozy bed for their stay!
* Owners must clean up after their dogs and dispose of waste properly. Failure to do so will incur an additional fee.
* Clean your pet’s paws before entering the cabin.
* Dogs must be leashed at all times on the property—no exceptions. Keep your dogs under strict control at all times around the site and nearby in woods which has lots of wildlife.
* Any damage must be reported within 1 hour of arrival; otherwise, you will be held responsible. Items chewed on or destroyed will be replaced entirely at the guest’s expense.
* We’re pet friendly but also cleaner friendly! If cleaners have to clean pet waste, rid of strong odors or stains are left behind requiring an excessive amount of time, we will compensate them for their time at your expense.

Regarding Service Dogs and Emotional Support Animals: Emotional Support Animals differ from trained and registered service animals. Emotional Support Animals must comply with our pet rules and the pet fee must be paid. Service dogs are welcome without an additional fee. You will be asked two questions permitted by the ADA:

1. Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
2. What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
Service animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered unless these devices interfere with the animal’s work or the disability prevents their use. In such cases, the animal must be under control through voice, signal, or other effective means and never left alone.

If a pet is misrepresented as a service animal, we may seek financial restitution, report fraudulent claims, and evict the guest without further notice, with no refund for the remaining stay.

Note that, as of 2022, both vacation rentals and airlines no longer recognize Emotional Support Animals as service animals. If you have an ESA, please book a pet-friendly property and pay the applicable fees.

- "My boyfriend and I traveled up north for a weekend getaway and this was the perfect cabin for it! It was close to lots of attractions and even though there was a cabin nearby, we had so much privacy with all the trees. The cabin was very clean and welcoming, we loved the sauna! The kitchen was so cute, I loved all the vintage and antique details added inside. I’m not much of a no plumbing person but the outhouse didn’t make it feel like you were in a outhouse at all. I will absolutely stay at another Patagonia cabin again, excellent communication and a friendly inviting experience overall ☺️"

Eve's Place Lakeside Cabin 2: Pet Friendly!
Cabin
Grand Marais, Minnesota, USA

Pet Friendly!

Located on Croftville Road, just three miles outside Grand Marais' city center, is Eve’s Place Lakeside Cabins. Cabin 2 of Eve’s Place is one of the four unique "tiny house" cottages of the resort, located just steps away from the resort's private access to the shared 200 feet of pebble beach on Lake Superior. Croftville Road intersects Eve's Place between the beach access and Cabin 2 and the narrow road is a wonderful, quiet road for walking and biking. The average speed on the road is under 20mph, as people are here to take in the beauty of this winding, narrow road along the rugged North Shore.

Come and enjoy this tiny little cottage. Originally built in the 1930s, Cabin 2 has had significant updates. This darling little cabin (at just 304 square feet) is ideal for two adults and one or two small children or perhaps three adults, if you like to be cozy, but it would be very tight for 4 adults. The bedrooms are too tight to fit a Pak N Play.We have had many great reviews from families with 2 adults and 2 kids, but we don't want you to be disappointed, we want you to know this is a VERY small, well-outfitted, adorable cabin. So please make sure to consider this tight space before booking. It's probably best not to have a big dog with you in this cabin, unless it's just 2 people traveling with the dog. And please note, 4 people maximum is 4 humans :) Therefore, if you are bringing your children, they are part of the total count.

There are two bedrooms, each bedroom separated from the main room by curtains. The larger bedroom has a queen bed and the smaller bedroom a full bed. There are no closets, but each bedroom has a unique space-saving dresser and hooks with hangers are located on the walls for your clothes. Between the two bedrooms is the updated bathroom with a ceramic tile and glass shower and plenty of towels. All the linens and towels are professionally cleaned for each guest. Cabin 2 has the smallest living area of the four cabins at Eve’s Place, but we have tried to maximize the space. In the main room is a table that can seat four (if you pull it away from the wall and find the tucked-under stools), a small couch and a Smart TV if you want to watch your streaming services. Please make sure to note that there is no Cable or direct TV. If you intend to watch TV, you must bring your own streaming passcodes. There’sWIFI throughout the cabin. Also in the main room is the kitchen with a refrigerator, small electric cooktop/stove, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, cookware and all the kitchen gadgets you should need for your stay. The full glass front door allows you unobstructed views of the lake, and it also has a hidden retractable screen if you'd like the breeze to come through the cabin. There’s a heater in the main room to keep the cabin comfortable on cool evenings. All of the spaces and areas are quite small, but well-planned to meet your needs, and every cabin is decorated with a unique arrangement of Eve’s paintings and drawings.

Just outside your front door, you can enjoy the amazing views of this majestic lake from the covered porch. Right outside the porch is a metal fire ring and four Adirondack chairs. In the evening, build a wood fire and make S’Mores with the provided marshmallow forks. You also have your own charcoal kettle grill with grilling tools. You can eat inside at the table, around the fire ring in the Adirondacks or at the outdoor picnic table. On a clear night there are always uncountable stars and, if you’re lucky, you may witness the amazing Northern Lights.

Just along Croftville Road from Cabin 2 are the wooden steps down to the cobblestone and pebble beach exclusively for guests of Eve’s Place. Much of the North Shore of Lake Superior is cliff or ledge rock, with occasional small beaches like at Eve’s Place. Head to the beach to skip flat stones, hunt for elusive agates, or simply sit and watch the waves and clouds. There’s no need for an agenda at the beach.

You can take a short drive into the town of Grand Marias, “America's Coolest Small Town", to enjoy all of the shops and restaurants, or plan a day hike/bike on the never-ending trails nearby. Or simply read a book while taking in the sights and sounds of this majestic lake. This is the ideal location to enjoy all that Grand Marais and the North Shore has to offer.

Eve's Place Cabin 2 is a Dog Friendly cabin. Eve LOVED dogs! If you are allergic to dogs, please check out Cabins 1 & 3, where no pets are allowed. The dogs visiting Cabin 2 seem to thoroughly enjoy hanging out on the front porch with their family. We provide a "baby gate" on the front porch so that your dog can hang out with you on the porch without a leash. This is a small resort with other guests around that may not love your dog, so please, you MUST keep your dog leashed at all times, and be respectful of our other guests. Dogs may not be left unattended in the cabin unless prearranged with us. We'vehad to call too many people back to attend to their barking or whining dogs, and frankly it's heartbreaking for us and the other guests to listen to.We do have listed that you can bring up to 2 dogs with you to Cabin 2, but once again, this is a very small space, so a big dog in this cabin will be tight. Two big dogs, overwhelming. Two little dogs....ok :) Croftville Road is enjoyed by many as a walking road, so if your dog is a barker when anyone walks by, this may not be the dog rental for you. The area northeast of the firepits boulders is our neighbor's property. Please don't allow your dog on that space.Since we can't provide an open space for your dog to run, we give the local dog park (Go Dog North Shore) a large annual contribution to help keep the dog park in good condition. It's an easy 4 mile drive from Eve's Place. Check it out! www.godognorthshore.org Please note, we do allow dogs of any size, but all dogs must be over the age of one and fully potty trained.

If booking via our site, you will find our Pet Policy under the policy tab on the home page, and it is listed at the time of booking when you check off that you agree to our rental agreement. The pet fee is $75 per stay. On our site, when booking, please click on the blue plus sign to add the pet fee. It will display the $75 fee plus tax.If booking via VRBO, please signify if you are bringing a pet with you by clicking on "travelers", and the checking "I am traveling with pets". Contact us at info@evesplacelakesidecabins.com regarding any questions.

There is parking available for one vehicle. If you need to bring two vehicles, please check with us ahead of time to make sure we can accommodate two vehicles. Our driveway runs between your outdoor space and your parking space. We usually only use our driveway once or twice a day. Please consider this area as your space, but don't leave anything on our driveway in case we need to use it.

Also make sure to note that these cabins were originally built in the 1930's when people were smaller. One upgrade we can't do, is make the spaces bigger. The bathrooms may be tight for you. And if you're over 6'2", you'll have to bend down a bit going through the doorways, and standing in the shower. So please consider this before booking. We don't want you to be disappointed with these tiny cottages due to their size.

Please note that starting in 2026 we will be accepting check-ins and check-outs on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays only. Check out the "Booking Information" tab on our site to see why we have made this change.

Highly recommended." - "Perfect little cozy cabin for a week away from the city. The view was gorgeous, the location perfect, and all the basic things we needed were already provided with the cabin. Absolutely will be coming back." - "I was not able to go on this trip due to an unforeseen surgery shortly before the scheduled trip. However, Mona was understanding and kind! The girlfriend I was originally going with brought her husband instead. Mona was good with this and welcomed them with open arms! There was bad weather coming, and she even gave them blankets to cover their car in case of hail. Lake Superior is a stones throw away from the property and was reported as a beautiful view! I would recommend this VRBO and cannot wait to stay there next summer!"

Eve's Place Lakeside Cabin 4: Pet Friendly!
Cabin
Grand Marais, Minnesota, USA

Pet Friendly!

Located on Croftville Road, just three miles outside Grand Marais' city center, is Eve’s Place Lakeside Cabins. Cabin 4 of Eve’s Place is one of the four unique "tiny house" cottages of the resort, located just steps away from the resort's private access to the shared 200 feet of pebble beach on Lake Superior. Croftville Road intersects Eve's Place between the beach access and Cabin 4 and the narrow road is a wonderful, quiet road for walking and biking. The average speed on the road is under 20mph, as people are here to take in the beauty of this winding, narrow road along the rugged North Shore.

With 384 square feet of living space, Cabin 4 is the largest of the cabins at Eve’s Place, and comfortably accommodates 2 adults and 2 children. Or if you have 4 adults traveling together, this would be the cabin at Eve's Place to stay in. But keep in mind: it's still a tiny cabin. There are two bedrooms, each bedroom separated from the main room by curtains. The bedrooms are too tight to fit a Pak N Play. The larger bedroom has a queen bed and the smaller bedroom a full bed. There are no closets, but each bedroom has a small dresser and hooks with hangers are located on the walls for your clothes. Between the two bedrooms is the updated bathroom with a ceramic tile and glass shower and plenty of towels. All the linens and towels are professionally cleaned for each guest. In the main room is a table that seats four, a small couch and a Smart TV if you want to watch your streaming services, plus WIFI throughout the cabin. All of the spaces and areas are small, but well-planned to meet your needs and each cabin is decorated with a unique arrangement of Eve’s paintings and drawings.

Cabin 4 sits the furthest back from the ever-so-charming Croftville Road, yet you're still close enough to the Lake to hear the waves and enjoy the spectacular view from your windows or your small deck that is just outside your front door. Just down from the deck are a metal fire ring and four chairs. In the evening, build a wood fire and make S’Mores with the provided marshmallow forks. You also have your own charcoal kettle grill with grilling tools. You can eat inside at the table or around the fire ring in the chairs. On a clear night there are always uncountable stars and, if you’re lucky, you may witness the amazing Northern Lights.

Eve's Place Cabin 4 is dog friendly! Eve LOVED dogs. We love dogs. But we do have 4 little cabins at Eve's Place, and the other guests might not love your dog. So please read the pet policy agreement before booking. Cabin 2 is also a dog friendly cabin. Cabins 1 & 3 remain non-pet friendly.Cabins 2 and 4 are somewhat removed from one another, and because your dog must remain on a leash the entire time at Eve's Place, having two cabins as pet friendly is working out great. Please note that there is a full front glass door for your dog to look out, and they will have a view of Croftville Road where people occasionally walk by with their dogs. Dogs may not be left unattended in the cabin unless prearranged with us. - "We LOVED Eve's Place! We stayed in Cabin 4, with the perfect view of the water from our cottage windows. Our goal was a very peaceful, lay-low long weekend and it was just right! Walking Croftville Road with our little dogs was so therapeutic. The family history and story of Eve's Place was what sold us to come and we definitely felt Eve's presence there. Her artwork was on display at the cottage and we loved hearing more about Eve from Mona, her daughter, the owner. Highly recommend! "

- "We had a great stay at Camp du Nord. The space itself is new, fresh, and thoughtfully decorated, and included some fun surprises like a record player, games, and camping-themed cookbooks. Modern appliances and wifi helped it feel more luxury retreat than cabin, while the large lot and surrounding woods kept that North Shore atmosphere. We stayed during high winds and below-zero weather and were completely snug! Great communication from the hosts, as well."

BRAND NEW Lakefront Tiny Home w/Treehouse Sauna - Jarvi Cabin at Stay Boreal
Cabin
Tofte, Minnesota, USA

This cabin comfortably suits two with a capacity of up to four (1 king bed and 1 murphy style queen bed). It has a smaller, cozy layout.

The first floor has a small kitchen with a dishwasher and bar-seating for four at the window. The living area can be quickly transformed into a bedroom by folding down the murphy wall-bed with a comfortable, memory foam mattress. (No one likes sleeping on a sofa mattress, right?!) As with most new construction on Lake Superior new lawns are prohibited. Please be patient with our landscape as we wait for natural vegetation to grow back in.

Lastly, please know that the steps going to the loft are steep.

**WINTER TRAVEL DISCLAIMER**
4WD is a requirement on the North Shore during the snowy months. There are so many roads and driveways to plow up here in the Great White North and not many plow trucks, so please come prepared and be patient. We are located right on Hwy 61, but there is a steeper section of driveway (which is common to most properties on the lake up here) that can be a bit slick to navigate in the winter for smaller vehicles. Cold or inclement weather will not permit cancellations/refunds. Stay Boreal is not liable for any towing costs. Please consider purchasing trip insurance if you have any concerns. Thank you!!

Grand Marais, Minnesota, USA

**Check-out reviews from last season at https://bronzebearcabin.com/ --- (cut and paste)

Located in Grand Marais, MN on the stunning Poplar Lake, this pristine spot is considered "mid-trail”on the historic Gunflint Trail. One can hit the BWCA from three different entry points on Poplar Lake, but you may be tempted to stay put as the fishing on this 290-acre lake is great and the relaxing is even better. The Bronze Bear features over 200 feet of shoreline with two large docks that offer stunning views of endless water.
Venture into Grand Marais—chosen multiple times as one of
America’s favorite small towns—for shopping and dining or trek to the end of the Gunflint Trail to explore. There is also delicious cuisine at the restaurants and bars located near our cabin mid-trail (a few of them walkable/boatable!). You will have easy access to the Superior Hiking Trail, other amazing inland fishing lakes and outfitters, and multiple cross-country ski and snowmobile trails.

After adventuring, take a nap on the comfy sectional couch on the screen porch, snuggled up next to the fireplace, or roast marshmallows around our solo stove (free wood provided!)

There are two bedrooms (1 queen each, sleeps 4 total) and 1 bathroom. Enjoy the open layout with floor to ceiling windows full of sunlight and views of the lake as well as huge, beautiful cedar trees and sometimes even a moose or two (rumor has it that our property is a favorite grazing spot on this road!).

Fiber optic broadband is in place for free wi-fi and there is a smart TV for streaming your favorite movies. Cooking essentials are provided so you can simply bring your food and beverages. All linens—including pillows, bedding, blankets, and towels—provided.

Notes on making the best of your wilderness adventure in our remote location:

1. Bottled drinking water will be available onsite (and you are welcome to bring an additional supply). The water supply is from a lake-draw system. While we do filter it, licensing laws require that we inform our guests that they should drink bottled water.

2. We have 2 canoes, 2 kayaks, and a paddle boat available onsite. There are also some life jackets/personal flotation devices on site for you to use.

3. Because there is no trash service here on the Gunflint Trail, guests are asked to take all garbage/recyclables with them when they leave. Nearby White Pine Lodge offers a place to dump your garbage for a fee if you want to talk to somebody there about using their service.

River Run: Secluded A-frame & Sauna near G Marais
Cabin
West Cook

Placed along the gorgeous Fall River, this A-frame cabin has a secluded wilderness feel, just two miles from Grand Marais. Take advantage of Grand Marais' renowned restaurants, shops, and shoreline or relax by your river-side campfire after a day of exploration or relaxation.

Enjoy the new sauna and off-grid shower house! Rest or catch up on a good book in the sun-filled and spacious interior, from a hammock between two birch trees, or on the large front deck surrounded by nature.

The space
(We typically keep a two night minimum, but occasionally we have a single night sandwiched between two longer stays. We invite single night stays on those nights and have a handful open. Please check the calendar for updated availability.)

Our family loves hiking the north shore's rivers and always thought it would be great to have a cabin on one of those great rivers. Here it is!

The lush green vegetation surrounding the cabin transforms into dazzling fall colors in September and October. Spring melt turns the otherwise meandering, cascading Fall River into a powerful torrent you can hear from inside the cabin.

Even though the cabin is located only a mile from the shore of Lake Superior and 2.5 miles from Grand Marais, it maintains a truly North woods, off grid feel: a winding gravel road heads up the hill from Lake Superior, crossing over a small creek, where you'll park at the trail head. From there you'll hike 400 yards (about a 5 minute walk) on a foot path to this charming cabin in the woods, perched along the bluff of the Fall River. Please take a moment to look over the map when you arrive at the cabin. There are no fences or much in the way of signage to mark property lines, so please be aware of your location and be considerate of neighboring cabins and land owners when exploring the area.

A cart is available if you want it. The cabin has a well equipped kitchen with pots and pans, silverware, glassware, a propane stovetop, a double insulated built-in cooler, and over 30 gallons of water for drinking, dishes, and cleaning.

The A-frame has south-facing floor to ceiling windows that showcase the surrounding woods and allow plenty of light and warmth. For brisk spring and fall nights there is a small propane heater to take off the chill.

There is a cozy bedroom downstairs with a queen bed and up the spiral staircase is a window-filled loft with three twin beds. All beds will be supplied with pillows and bedding.

There is a small solar powered system supporting the lighting for the bedroom, kitchen, and loft and a phone charger.

The Sun-Mar compost toilet is environmentally friendly, convenient, and comfortable. The deck and included hammocks offer the opportunity to relax and bask in the 25 acre wood and listen to the river run.

Take advantage of the newly built wood fired sauna and off-grid grid shower house on property.

$10 day-pass to the Grand Marais YMCA to take advantage of the gym, workout facility, showers, hot tub, sauna, and pool (check hours online at cook county ymca).

The newly constructed A-frame (2020) is comfortable with many windows and a vaulted ceiling that offer abundant natural lighting and breezes.

Kids and adults alike will enjoy walking along the bank or through the moving water of the larger Fall River, or racing sticks, and rock searching on the smaller creek. From the cabin, expect to see deer, squirrels, and birds ranging from songbirds to woodpeckers, grouse, ravens, and bald eagles. The woods are also home to less frequent visitors like black bear and moose. Coyote and timber-wolves can be heard howling nearby as well. Also keep an eye out for edible (and non-edible) mushrooms as well as wild raspberries.

All of this, a short bike ride, run, or drive from the Lake Superior shoreline and Grand Marais!

Amenities:

Essentials • Smoke alarm • Fire extinguisher • Heating • First aid kit • Carbon monoxide alarm • Extra pillows and blankets • Cooking basics • Bed linens • Dishes and silverware

The Ferny Fern: Off-grid cabin and sauna near G.M.
Cabin
West Cook

Enjoy serene North woods seclusion just two and a half miles from Grand Marais! At the end of a foot path you'll find yourself at this charming off-grid cabin set in the forests of the Lake Superior bluff. This quaint cabin is filled with windows bringing views of the surrounding wood. It features a polished/rustic interior complete with well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, and wood stove. Fall River access and guests now have access to a new wood-fired sauna and off grid-shower house.

The space
One of a kind Northern getaway!

A short drive up the hill from Lake Superior, and three hundred fifty yards along a beautiful wooded footpath will bring you to this unusually secluded and ultra cozy North Shore cabin.

There are some seasonal views of Lake Superior from here, but the real allure of this cabin is the beautiful spot it's been carefully set on. There is a wide variety of North woods flora and fauna, meandering creeks, and the gorgeous Fall River in your back yard... all of this while being within easy reach of Lake Superior, Grand Marais, Lutsen, Gunflint trail, etc.

It's a great place to appreciate dark starry skies and total silence. Guests who walk the trail quietly will routinely bump into deer, grouse, eagles, ravens, pileated woodpeckers and less frequently fox, bears, wolves, and even moose.

The many South facing windows invite sunshine throughout the cabin while overlooking the surrounding wood. The deck, hammocks, and campfire area make for a relaxing outdoor space.

The clean cozy comfort of this charming cabin is a fun contrast to the wild landscape that surrounds it . A queen bed in the spacious bedroom and a comfortable futon in the living area allow up to four guests a good night's rest. A well equipped kitchen with propane stove and oven, over 30 gallons of water supply, ice stocked cooler, dishes, pots and pans, cleaning supplies, etc. allow for great meals inside (or use the campfire grill for an outdoor cookout). The wood stove quickly takes off any chill in the spring or fall.

Some will find it a great place to unwind and explore, never leaving the property during their stay, while others will take advantage of this cabins close proximity to the great restaurants and shops of Grand Marais as well as the Lake Superior Shoreline, waterfalls, and endless hikes within the area.

Guest access
While at the cabin, we invite guests to freely explore the woods, creeks, and River on the property. Because there are no fences or obvious markers along property lines, we ask that you review the map of the area to avoid walking through neighbor's property. We also ask guests to leave a buffer area around the neighboring cabin on the property. To help maintain the feeling of seclusion, please avoid being within sight of the neighboring cabin (with a couple cabins on 26 acres it's pretty easy to do).

Other things to note
This is an amazing place for adults and children to relax and explore, but please be aware of some potential pitfalls. Especially with small children, consider the woods can be discombobulating and one can lose their way if away from a path. There are several creeks and a larger River that at times are meandering, but at other times rushing and cold. There are wild animals living amongst you. While bear and wolf issues are extremely rare, but they're presence in the area is frequent and should be noted. Probably the biggest concern is that guests may not properly stow away trash, recycling, or food , resulting in a returning bear. For the sake of future guests and the bear please be careful of your food and garbage.

Amenities:

Crib • Bed linens • Board games • Extra pillows and blankets • Heating • Smoke alarm • Children’s books and toys • Cleaning products • Carbon monoxide alarm • Indoor fireplace

The Burrow on Tucker Lake - Gunflint Trail
Cabin
Grand Marais

A five-minute hike through the forest leads you to the front door of The Burrow, our off-grid GUEST cabin on a hill just above Tucker Lake.

A unique experience on the Gunflint Trail, our hideaway provides an opportunity for solitude at the edge of the wilderness without giving up the comforts of home.

A short walk down a hill to the lake gives you direct BWCA access from our private dock and opportunities for adventure and relaxation with provided snow shoes, paddle boards and a canoe.

The space
The Burrow is hike-in and off-grid. You should be prepared to carry everything you take in and out on your back. In winter you can walk the packed trail to the cabin without issue. Snowshoes (free with your stay) or backcountry skis however are recommended to traverse the snow on the lake and beyond.

After parking at the trailhead by the main house, guests take the .2-mile path as it gently meanders through woods of spruce, aspen and white pine before arriving at The Burrow. The lake is another 200 feet through the forest.

The Burrow is powered by the sun and heated with propane and wood, but still offers many modern amenities including internet. Visiting in the summer is carefree and requires little to no monitoring of the cabin's off-grid systems. A visit in the winter however will require you to monitor battery power levels and burn wood to keep the cabin at a comfortable temperature in addition to a vented, propane heater.

AT&T customers will have 2 bars of 5G service at the cabin, but the lodging also comes with a 5G capable iPad that can be used to watch movies, send messages, and provide a hotspot to connect your devices.

The cabin's kitchen includes a two-burner stove top, a spacious mini fridge, basic kitchen utensils and everything you need to make a good cup of coffee.
NOTE: Potable water is not provided to guests. The Burrow has a sink that is operated with a foot pump that provides unheated, NON POTABLE water for doing dishes and washing up. Drinking water must be hiked in (or filtered by guests as you would in the BWCA).
The cabin's indoor bathroom uses an incinerating toilet, which might take a little getting used to but provides a superior experience to an outhouse. The bathroom also includes a wash basin that can be filled with water and a mirror.

When the seasons allow, guests can use an outdoor shower filled with water heated on the stove. In winter there is currently NO SHOWER option at the burrow. You can shower at the YMCA or Municipal Campground in Grand Marais.

Tucker Lake is 2.7 miles long and is located partially in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The lake is shallow at 40’ and warms up more quickly than deeper lakes in the area. A fast drop off from the dock makes for great swimming and fishing. Anglers report walleye and sunfish in the lake, and your neighbors will include beaver, otters, moose, loons and wolves.

Guest access
You have private access to the Burrow, dock, canoe, and two paddle boards.

Getting Here
The Burrow is located on Tucker Lake about 40 miles up the Gunflint Trail. The trip takes about an hour from Grand Marais, Minnesota.

Our road is a 1.25 mile rough gravel road with many potholes. While AWD is not required in the summer it is recommended. No matter the season, expect to drive slow to avoid big rocks and bumps in the road. It’s all part of your wilderness experience!

Specific directions given after booking.

Other things to note
Internet and Cell Service
If you have AT&T service you will have 1-2 bars of 5G LTE reception at the Burrow. If you don't, the cabin includes an iPad with AT&T service that can be used to watch movies, send messages, or provide your own devices with wifi using a hotspot. Hotspot data is limited so please be considerate with your usage and watch movies using the iPad rather than a personal device.

The Kitchen
***You are the Fire Department at the Burrow. Know where the fire extinguisher is and how to use it.***
The kitchen in the Burrow has a two-burner range, basic cooking utensils, including knives, cutting boards, a pot and pan, chemex coffee pot with filters, and a kettle. It’s a great place to make a meal for 1-3 people and comes with the dishes to do so. A sink with limited water supply for cleaning dishes and washing up is also included.

Drinking and Cooking Water
Drinking and cooking water must be hiked in by guests. Water for washing is provided by us, but unless specifically marked as potable, water at the burrow should not be consumed. Sink water, for example, should be considered non potable and should only be used for washing.

The Sink at the burrow uses a special septic system, so please DO NOT WASH FOOD OR GREASE DOWN THE DRAIN. The drain strainer should be emptied into the trash to keep food particles out of pipes. Your consideration is important to keeping the cabin running properly and protecting the environment around the cabin.

How to use the sink:
The sink runs on a small water pump that works with a foot pedal at the base. The faucet lever must be open and all the way up for the foot pedal to work. The pump shakes when in use — that's normal and perfectly OK. When the tank below the sink runs out of water, use one of the containers labeled "NON POTABLE" located in the cabinet near the door to fill it up again.

If you want hot water in the sink, please use the SILVER kettle under the stove to heat it up. Once heated, add the hot water to COLD water already in the sink tank. Be careful not to burn yourself when turning on the faucet.

Use the drain strainer to ensure food and debris are deposited into the trash and do not go down the drain. NO GREASE can go down the drain. Grey water in the sink is filtered using the timber septic box outside the kitchen window. The outdoor shower is on top of the septic box.

Lights and Power
The Burrow is solar powered, which means you may need to conserve power if there hasn't been much sun. Usually this isn't an issue, but during the winter months, when days are shorter, it's especially important to keep an eye on the battery level so you don't run out of juice.

You can track battery use by opening the closet in the bathroom and locating the small round digital readout on the back of the cabinet. Pressing any button will illuminate the LCD screen and give you a battery level in percentage. If you accidentally change the digital readout to anything other than percentage, use the arrow keys to cycle through the options until you see a percent; 0-100.

If the cabin loses power, but you have plenty of battery charge, first check the inverter status in the loft. There is a switch in the sleeping area between the bedroom shelves. If it is red, turn it off and on again and power should return.

If power does not return, you may have depleted the batteries. If that happens, you don't need to sit in the dark. Flashlights and lanterns are provided in the bathroom closet. The stove will continue to provide heat. And if you're worried about perishables in the fridge, put them in the cooler on the porch — it'll be cold out there but oh so warm inside. Power should return as soon as the sun comes back for a bit.

The Bathroom
Feel free to fill the pitcher in the bathroom from the sink to use with the wash basin. The used water from this should be discarded in the kitchen sink.

The Toilet at the Burrow MUST BE USED WITH A BOWL LINER (Basically an oversized coffee filter).

The Burrow does not have a traditional septic system. Instead, we have an incinerating toilet called "the Cinderella." This toilet runs on propane instead of water, can be used up to 3 times per hour, and handles both urine and feces.

To use the toilet, lift the lid to turn the toilet on and insert a bowl liner as depicted in the diagram on the bottom of the toilet lid. DO NOT USE the toilet WITHOUT A LINER. It creates a mess.

When you are finished, close the lid and open the air vent on the wall behind the toilet at least one click. Press the button with the triangle on it. The liner will drop into the chamber below and begin to incinerate. The air vent needs to remain open for the duration of incinerating (approximately one hour depending on weight). The toilet can be used in the same fashion even during an incineration up to 3 times per hour, but each time the incineration process starts over.

If you only need to urinate and are ok going outside we prefer that you do (a minimum of 50’ away from the lake and 50’ from the house). If it's winter, please do not pee close to the Burrow. Find a spot away from the house in the woods and cover up your pee with fresh snow when you're done.

If you are only peeing inside, you can use the bowl liners twice or more for pee only — If it’s yellow, let it mellow.

Outdoor Shower (Only operational Spring - Fall)
The outdoor shower head is located in the bathroom closet. Make sure it is charged and bring it to the outdoor shower stall on top of the septic box. Fill the bucket in the shower stall with water from the rain barrel, the lake, or a provided non potable water container.

If you would like to have a hot shower you can heat the silver kettle under the stove top and pour it into a bucket of already cold water. Please check the temperature of the water before using. To use the shower head, put the sprayer into the holder on the shower stall and place the other end with the pump in the bucket. Press the on button and wash. Turn the shower head off and on while lathering to make sure you have enough water left to rinse off.

Heat - Inside fires only allowed October - April unless otherwise discussed
Toasty fires in a wood burning stove are one of the best parts of Winter in the North Woods — but safely when making a fire in the Burrow is very important. Please familiarize yourself with the location of the fire extinguisher and how to use it.

To start a fire, open the stove damper fully by pushing the damper lever on the front of the stove all the way to the left. Open the door and place one log inside to the right or left side of the fire box. Put a healthy amount of birch bark strips next to the log. Then lay kindling over the birch bark by resting one end on top of the first log. Place one log on top of the kindling and light the birch bark. Leave the door to the stove open just a crack for the first 2-5 minutes to make sure there's enough air for the fire to start. DO NOT DO THIS FOR MORE THAN 10 MINUTES. Now close the stove door and make sure it is latched. Keep the damper fully open for 10-20 more minutes to make sure the fire is burning well (If the cabin or chimney pipe is cold you may have to leave the damper open for longer). Lastly push the damper lever to the right to close it down to 25-50%. Once you have a hot fire you should just be able to keep adding wood every 40-90 minutes without touching the damper. DO NOT LEAVE THE DAMPER FULLY OPEN FOR MORE THAN 30 MINUTES. This could lead to fire.

The wall heater may be on and set to low when you arrive. Please use the wood burning stove for “comfort heat” in colder temperatures. The small wall heater is meant to keep the cabin at a reasonable temperature for your arrival but will not warm the cabin up to 60-70 degrees.

Bonfires
Bonfires are only allowed when the Superior National Forest is in low or moderate fire danger. You may see signs at ranger stations on your drive north or you can check the fire danger with us. In all instances be safe with your bonfires, keep them in the provided fire ring, and douse them with water before going to bed. Do not leave fires unattended and don't make them larger than they need to be.

The Lake.
Tucker Lake is a 2.7 mile long lake that is about 40 feet deep and is great for swimming. The lake's dark orange color comes from the iron and tannins in the water. The BWCA boundary line passes along the tips of the islands to the west and the rarely used portage out of Tucker into Little Iron is about a mile to the east. You are welcome to use the supplied paddle boards or canoe, but please do not portage the Burrow's provided canoe out of Tucker Lake. State law requires you to bring a life vest in the canoe for each person on the water, even if you decide not to wear them. A MNDNR fishing license is required to fish in any public lake in Minnesota.

Restaurants
Poplar Haus restaurant and bar has great food and cocktails and is located about 15 minutes east (towards town) on the Gunflint Trail. Reservations are required in peak season and recommended in winter.

White Pine Lodge and Pizza
Great pizza, wine and beer about 15 minutes east (towards town) on the Gunflint Trail.
Reservations are required.

Trail Center
Beer, Malts, and tavern style food about 15 minutes east (towards town) on the Gunflint Trail. Reservations are not required, but there is often a line in peak season.

Hungry Jack Lodge
Bar with food. About 15 minutes east (towards town) on the Gunflint Trail. Make a left (north) on Hungry Jack Road and follow signs about two miles to Hungry Jack Lodge. No reservations.

Gunflint Lodge
Restaurant with full bar. About seven minutes west (away from town) on the Gunflint Trail make a right (north) on Gunflint Lake Road and follow signs about one mile to Gunflint Lodge.

The Community
The Gunflint Trail is a community all of its own in Cook County. Many residents live tucked back into the forests year round and survive in this sometimes harsh place by depending on the help of their neighbors. Please be respectful to both our human and animal neighbors by keeping loud music/sounds to a minimum and practicing leave no trace principles. There are often events going on either up the trail or in town. Please do your own research about events, trails, and things to do in the area or feel free to ask us what’s going on in the wilderness.
