The village is the vibrant heart of the picturesque Matakana Wine Region with its numerous vineyards and olive groves and craft breweries. . It is peaceful and quiet amongst the trees and a perfect place for a break.

The Retreat is a colourful, private and peaceful to stay. Imagine waking to birdsong, not cars, in the morning. Imagine having a quiet drink on your private terrace or walking down to the iconic Matakana pub for a drink with music in the evening.

We aim to be sustainable, comfortable and fun. We want to share this paradise with other couples. We aim to be a romantic couple's retreat for long week ends. Treat yourselves and relax here!

The Retreat is a large, self contained (79sm), open plan accommodation next to the main cottage with lovely rural views. We are a short walk (1.5ks) from the market, cinemas, cafes, pub, shops and restaurants. No need to look for a park on Saturday morning when you visit the market.

The full kitchen has everything you need to create gourmet meals from the produce you buy at the market, bakery or local shops We supply local ingredients for breakfast and you can even pick a spray free salad from you own garden.

We supply the best local goods for you. Goose Bakery sourdough, eggs from a local farm, healthy muesli , teas and Nespresso coffee. Seasonal fruit and flowers from our garden (or friends). We supply your preferred milk and there is a BBQ on the terrace.

The ensuite bathroom has a large, walk in shower, two washbasins and toilet: the guest toilet has a wash basin and a secure Sani pod for items that cannot be flushed down the toilet. Please note, we do not have a bath tub.

The walk-in-wardrobe is very large with an ironing board and clothes rack. There is a luggage rack and a choice of pillows stored here.

All our water is particle and UV filtered and tastes just like mineral water. Bore water is filtered through reverse osmosis for occasional use in summer droughts. Our professional cleaner uses our own cleaning products that are chemical free. We have all our bedding professionally laundered.

There are games and a large, wall internet TV for when it rains if you don't feel like seeing a movie at the local cinemas. Then there are three outdoor areas for when the sun shines. A large covered furnished terrace, a tropical patio and a small seating area outside the bedroom with a backdrop of native trees and birds. We have unlimited, fast, broadband with a wireless connection for all your apps. It is easy to catch up on work if you need to.

Guest access
Guests have access to all areas around the Retreat. This includes the private, covered entrance to the front door, the covered terrace, tropical courtyard and patio outside the bedroom.

KIngfisher Cottage is a home and business that grows and sells plants and trees on 1.67 hectares. Although we are next door but offer our guests total privacy during their stay and in return, we ask that they respect our privacy too.

Our cottage is only a few meters away, so we ask that you are considerate with loud or late music.

Other things to note
You are welcome to have a few friends round for a drink or meal, but no parties or late noise please!

We have external security cameras in the drive for your safety.

The place is not suitable for animals or children - and it is designed for couples to get away and relax.
Our bathroom has a large, walk in shower and two wash basins, but no bath!

Let us know if you are uncomfortable around dogs as we have a very friendly sheepdog (Monty) who normally roams the entire property! We can keep him indoors if you let us know... he loves everyone and will visit you otherwise!

Take it easy at this unique and tranquil getaway. The original 3 bedroom farm cottage is set on 10 acres. It’s a 2 minute walk to Matakana town centre, which has amazing restaurants, farmers markets and a movie theatre, plus lots of boutique stores. We are a 6 min drive to Omaha beach. If you want escape the hustle and bustle of the city, our cottage will suit you perfectly.

We have a small lake on our property and horses in the paddocks.

A Matakana icon and one of the first residences to grace the landscape in 1883, the White Cottage embodies the heritage and heart of the much-loved region – but with a thoroughly modern touch.
Built by the Lovelock family from native kauri sourced nearby, the elegantly chic home was lovingly refurbished by Amy and Simon Hope in mid-2018 and represents a unique opportunity for its guests to stay right in the heart of New Zealand’s ‘slow living’ capital.

The space
Just steps from the ever-popular Matakana markets and minutes’ from the region’s famous beaches, its stylish interior and heritage touches echo the spirit of the town – honouring the past while celebrating a truly exciting present.
Renovated in collaboration with local artisans and craftspeople, the two bedroom home comes complete with entertainer’s kitchen and spacious living area, as well as the opportunity to spill onto the large outdoor dining area for al fresco fun once summer hits. Intuitively refurbished to the nth degree, it retains the soul of a home but with all of the essentials of modern life, lived well.
