If you are looking for a peaceful retreat with incredible water and natural landscapes, you have found it. This is the perfect location surrounded by nature.

This second floor farmhouse cottage is located on a private, historic family estate, and offers acres of open land with views of the Long Island Sound and the mouth of the Connecticut River. There is access to private beaches on the Long Island Sound where you will often be the only people you can see. There are plenty of things to do in the Old Lyme and surrounding area, with unique shops and art galleries.

Peaceful retreat: This secluded second floor cottage, located on a private lane, rests in a former barnyard with fantastic views of Long Island Sound, the mouth of the Conn. River, Saybrook lighthouses, marshes and coves teeming with birds (bird sanctuary). The space below (first floor) provides a laundry room, storage and carport. It is a short walk from Udder Heaven to a secluded beach on the Long Island Sound and another beach on a protected cove, open fields with walking, hiking and run paths are just the beginning of this quiet private retreat. This is a unique and special place to bird watch, especially osprey with many nest on the estate. If you enjoy photography, this is one of the best locations for unique photos and memories.

A huge deck for entertaining, a covered carport and laundry facility are included. It's name is 'Udder Heaven' because it once housed the dairy, when the farm was active.

The cottage is on the second floor, requiring climbing stairs.

Dogs are welcome, $75 per week cleaning fee per dog is required. We ask smokers to use the deck just outside the living room. Pillows and blankets are supplied at no charge. Sheets and towels are provided for an additional $100 fee (select when booking). If you decide to bring your own linens (sheets) and towels, there are 2 twin beds and one queen bed, plus a convertible couch (double). The kitchen is fully equipped, and the cottage has ceiling fans and is air conditioned (quiet, ductless with compressor outside). Because there is no heat, the cottage is closed during winter. Utilities are part of the rent, and local phone service is provided. The following is also included with rental of Udder Heaven: Samsung flat screen 32' HDTV, DVD/VCR player, internet services. The normal rental period is from 4:00 PM on Saturday to 10:00 AM Saturday, so we can squeeze in a thorough cleaning.

Old Lyme environs: Old Lyme is a central location for many activities. Nearby are rivers and coves convenient for kayaking and sailing. The Mystic Seaport is a short distance away, as are Gillette's Castle, the Essex Steam Train (and boat ride), Devil's Hopyard Park, the Florence Griswold Art Museum, the Godspeed Opera House for summer shows, Chamard Vineyard, golf and fine dining (The Griswold Inn in Essex) and the best pizza, ice cream, and grinder shops in New England. This classic Beach Cottage (the “Sandtrap”) built in 1956, with own private beach on Long Island Sound, is fully updated while maintaining its historical roots. Old Lyme Land Trust protected wetlands, with views of occupied osprey nests, great white herons and other native birds, adjoin the cottage’s private parking space. As part of Hawk’s Nest Beach community, you can walk to Garvin’s Store, where daily free activities for kids are organized, and play tennis or horseshoes on the courts.

The Sandtrap has plenty of room for family and guests with five parking spaces. Fully furnished kitchen, grill (including propane tank), beach chairs and umbrellas, linens, bath and beach towels, kids' beach toys, boogie boards and inflatables, huge collection of beach reading, classic toys, games and puzzles provided. You do not need to bring any of the above items: they are there. No television but free Wi-Fi Internet access

The large screened-in front porch, with chaise lounges, dining table and ocean views up and down the beach is a favorite location to enjoy your morning coffee. At high tide the front porch is less than 50' from the water. The kitchen is part of the “great room” with views directly on the water. A very large fireplace makes for cozy evenings when it is cool or for marshmallow toasting and when it’s hot the kitchen/dining/living area is fully air-conditioned.

There is a master bedroom with a queen bed on the first floor (air-conditioned) and three bedrooms on the second floor, two with full size beds. The third bedroom has three twin beds. The upstairs bedrooms have ceiling fans and are open to the eaves (those requiring complete privacy should use the master bedroom). One and a half baths plus hot water enclosed outdoor shower to wash away the sea salt after a dip in the Sound. There is a washer/dryer in the cottage.

Free family activities starting at Garvin’s store include a marine biologist's weekly visit to discuss and touch our local sea life. Kids events include, a talent show at the store, lollipop hunts, scavenger hunts, bonfires, art creations, sand castle contests, tie-dye tee shirts, movies on the beach, crabbing contest, edible art and much more. You can pick up beach necessities–coffee, ice cream, milk, ice–and tee shirts, beach wear and Hawk’s Nest Beach souvenirs as well

Great local restaurants, renowned art galleries and museums featuring the historic Old Lyme school of American impressionism, both boutique and outlet shopping, spas, golf, antiquing, live theater, local farmers’ markets and much more are very nearby. Cottage owners, who live only 5 minutes away, provide a personalized guide, with maps, to the shoreline’s many attractions.

Welcome back to Salt 'n' Lyme. 2024 will be our third year renting, as the first two went very well. Please read the reviews of our many satisfied tenats to get a feeling of what to expect from your time here. This is a simple cottage in a phenomenal location, and we are doing our best to keep costs reasonable, for many to enjoy. Please read the VRBO ad thouroughly and ask as many questions as you can. Under ammenities you will find all of the things included with this rental, if it isn't listed, it probably isn't included, but again... please ask. You will find that mostly all necessities required for a good experience are provided.

Selden Cottage is a charming, cozy, comfortable place with views of fields, stone walls and barns. It has a private driveway off a quiet road. There is excellent biking, hiking and walking from the front door. Occasionally a family of eagles can be seen training their young on the ice 100 yards from the front door. Osprey fish all summer long a short walk away. The Goodspeed Opera House, Chester Hadlyme Ferry, Fox Hopyard Golf Course, Gillette Castle and the Hadlyme Country Store are all within a few minutes by car. No one lives in this cottage. It is only available for short term rental.

Our home offers the charm of old and the convenience of the new! We added on to the original 1940 cottage to create a new 2400 sq. ft. home that is perfect for hosting extended families. Now with full AC! Sleeps 12 comfortably with 2 full baths, one on the first floor. 4 bedrooms (upstairs and down) including a 'kids' bunk room that sleeps 6. The game and TV room, enclosed front porch with a children’s play area, and the airy and sunny breezeway for morning coffee or dining offers plenty of room to spread out. Our large private outdoor space is comfortable for cookouts and dining on the covered porch or for visiting by the fire pit. The shaded yard has room to play and we have plenty of parking off the street - not common! Our shed is full of beach gear and lawn games and the outdoor shower is perfect for returning after a beach day. Short walk to the beach, ice cream, conveniences, and the Sound View carousel. Please, no pets or smoking in the house.

*Events are limited to 10 total attendees, including the guests in the home.
*There is no smoking/ vaping of any kind in the house or anywhere on the property please. Evidence of any form of smoking may result in immediate eviction and an additional $200 cleaning fee will be charged.
*Standard Check in is at 4 and Check-out is by 11 am.
If we can accommodate an early check in or late check out we will let you know, but we cannot guarantee it as there may be guests leaving/ arriving before or after you and the cleaners need time to prepare the home to be in tip top shape for other guests as well as for you!

Welcome to a beautiful and newly updated retreat in a cozy beachside community. Tucked into a quiet corner, you will only be a short walk to Soundview Beach, restaurants, ice cream, and the historic Old Lyme Carousel. Includes everything you need for a beach day - towels, chairs, toys, and a caddy! A/C in all bedrooms and living spaces. Great for a relaxing and comfortable stay on the charming shoreline of Connecticut.

The space
Guests have access to the entire home inside and out, including a large and inviting teak outdoor dining table that comfortably seats 6. In addition, there is a lower level patio with ample seating to relax- a bench with a built in table for food, beverages, etc. There is a teak sectional couch and coffee table as well as a grill and chiminea. In-ground solar lights surround the patio, creating a warm and inviting environment. There is an outdoor shower next the deck which is wonderful for showering off after a long day at the beach. A few outdoor games are provided as well, including volleyball, badminton, and cornhole which you can play in the small grassy backyard.

This cozy cottage feels open and spacious with an open floor plan and beautiful beams accentuating the ceiling. The living room is a serene space, with a sofa and 2 comfortable lounge chairs to relax in. In the cabinet below the tv, you will find games, books, and art materials for rainy days or evening entertainment. Included in the space is a round pedestal table that seats 4, and a breakfast bar in the kitchen that seats an additional 2. The large and spacious kitchen has everything you'll need to cook a meal, including pots, pans, cooking utensils, etc.

You will find the washer and dryer in the kitchen as well. A bonus sunroom off the front of the home adds even more seating, with a wicker chair and sofa for you to enjoy your morning coffee or evening drink. There are hooks located on the wall of the sunroom for guests to hang their towels from the beach, and a basket on the floor to grab fresh towels from.

There are 2 bedrooms total, with 1 queen bed downstairs and 1 queen bed + 2 twin beds upstairs. Each bed contains soft, 100% cotton sheets and 2 pillows per person along with a light duvet and extra blanket at the bottoms of each bed for nights that may get a little cooler. Dressers and a wardrobe are also provided.

The bathroom includes bath towels, makeup towels, a vanity mirror, and in-shower shampoo/conditioner/body wash in case you forgot to bring some along. As mentioned in the listing description, we'll provide you with everything you'll need for the beach including beach chairs, towels, toys, and a beach wagon.

The Bowerbird, at the opposite end from Big Y, is a fun shop with a kid’s section and a grownup section as well!

Don’t miss Treasures, across from the Big Y shopping plaza, on Halls Road. Treasures is a selective home furnishing resale store full of beautifully curated home décor.

Hallmark Drive-In on Shore Road has great take-out, or eat-in on outdoor picnic tables. Their burgers and fries are always good, and check out all the homemade ice cream flavors!

Old Lyme Ice Cream Shoppe on Lyme Street is not to be missed and offers award winning homemade ice cream flavors. Their signature ice cream flavor, Moroccan Rose, is sure to be your new favorite!

Coffees Country Market on Boston Post Road offers delicious prepared meals and outstanding baked goods. Their mozzarella/tomato/pesto baguette sandwiches are made fresh daily and available for easy pick up at the deli counter, or order a custom breakfast sandwich from the grill. There are delicious salads to go too, and in case you forgot any essentials, the shelves are stocked with grocery items. And grab a cup of coffee while you’re at Coffees!

Old Lyme Inn on Lyme Street offers live music at its Sunday Jazzy Brunch. If the weather is nice, eat outside on the patio and don’t forget to order a Bloody Mary with your Eggs Benedict!

Florence Griswold Museum offers unique art exhibitions. While you’re there, have lunch on the veranda at Café Flo overlooking the Lieutenant River. Connecticut Magazine selected Café Flo for Best Outdoor Dining!

East Haddam

Fox Hopyard offers a private golf membership, but visitors are welcome to enjoy the course and its facilities as well. It’s restaurant, On The Rocks, is open to the public and offers both indoor dining, and outdoor dining on the veranda overlooking the course.

Ray of Light Farm, at 232 Town Street, is a fun afternoon trip for the kids! The farm is an animal rescue and therapy center. Horses, goats, peacocks, and other animals are lovingly cared for at the farm. Admission is free, and donations are greatly appreciated.

Gillette Castle State Park on River Road sits high above the Connecticut River. The castle itself is interesting to tour, and the grounds are great for hiking!

Goodspeed Opera House offers award-winning shows in an historic opera building. Every seat in the small theater is great, and the shows are simply outstanding!

After the show, walk next door to get dinner at the Gelston House. Casual dining is offered on one side, fine dining overlooks the river.

Old Saybrook

Johnny Ad’s on Boston Post Road is a local favorite. Try their lobster roll (hot or cold), add waffle fries and a birch beer and you’ve got a meal fit for royalty! Their hotdogs are out of this world as well.

Paperback Café on Main Street is great for lunch/brunch. The vibe is laid-back and the servings are large and delicious!

Fresh Salt at Saybrook Point and Marina Inn offers delicious gourmet dining indoors or outside on the porch overlooking the water.

Located on Elm Street, Pasta Vita sells freshly made, pre-packaged gourmet to go. The food is truly gourmet, it is reasonably priced, and it can make your stay-at-home meals quick and delicious! Everything is excellent, from their soups, to bread pudding, to family meals, salads, and biscotti!

Essex

The Griswold Inn on Main Street is nostalgic. Their Sunday Hunt Breakfast (a fancy name for brunch) is not to be missed. The whole town is lovely and full of history. Great shopping is all within walking distance. While you’re there take a stroll to the end of Main Street to the river. You might see a family of ducks wading there. It’s also the perfect spot to sit and reflect by the water.

Noank (next to Mystic)

Abbott’s Lobster in the Rough, and Ford’s Lobster are both known for their fresh seafood, especially … lobster! Both offer outdoor picnic table dining with water views. Get there off-hours to avoid a long line. Regardless, they are both worth the wait!

Mystic

The Mystic Aquarium is a fun day trip with the kids. The town of Mystic itself has lots of fun shopping and all different types of dining from fancy to casual. Mystic is a lively town and the famous Mystic Pizza is located right in the center.

Sift Bakery offers many delicious items, in addition to their vast selection of Macarons. You’ll want a box of their goodies to-go to enjoy on the front porch later.
