I thought you might like some feedback on our holiday:

Sawmill Cottage felt like home; a good place to relax in the evenings after a busy day out. We effectively had five days to explore Northumberland but we squeezed in quite a lot. The Sunday was the only rainy day and we spent time indoors at Cragside which was full of interest and definitely worth a visit. On the other days we walked for miles all around Northumberland: from Craster to Howick Hall and back then onto Dunstanburgh Castle and back to Craster. Howick Hall gardens are beautiful and particularly the new sensory garden. A walk to Windy Gyle on a reasonably good weather day was very windy nonetheless! Great to stand at Russel's Cairn and look into Scotland one way and England the other. A visit to Holy Island and then to Berwick on Tweed where we walked the Elizabethan town walls on Wednesday. On our final day we completed the Rothbury Round; a day of beautiful weather and probably our favourite walk of the holiday with the bonus of a starting point 5 minutes away in Rothbury.

This was our first visit to Northumberland. We didn't realise how big an area it is and how many different experiences are available for holiday makers. The countryside is less frequented than most of the other areas we've visited in England and results in more unspoilt countryside and an abundance of wildlife. It has left us wanting to return and I'm sure we will in the not too distant future. Sawmill Cottage is an ideal base, quiet and perfectly located on the edge of the national park and just half an hour from the coast. We enjoyed our holiday. Thank you.

A very warm welcome to 'number eleven', a rather unique stay in one of the Addycombe Cottages. This is a Victorian Grade II* listed apartment in the town of Rothbury, overlooking the Coquetdale Valley. The space is peaceful, welcoming and relaxing. Perfect for a romantic escape or a family adventure. Dogs are considered part of the family and are very much welcome.
You will have this first floor apartment to yourselves accessed via the original stone steps to the rear. The living space is open plan featuring an AGA in the kitchen area and a double stove in the inglenook stone fireplace.

The second bedroom has a single bed with stunning views across the Thropton rooftops and over to the moorland in the distance. While not as large as the master bedroom, still offers a cosy night's sleep in lavish bedding, while you’ll be able to store your belongings in the built-in wardrobe.

The family bathroom has a large walk-in shower, WC and wash basin, along with a heated towel rail, bathroom cabinet and shaving mirror.

A door from the kitchen opens out onto the private garden which showcases peace and tranquillity. Take a seat on the grassed area and enjoy the sounds of the countryside while you drink your morning coffee or treat yourself to a late tipple where you can watch the sky go dark and the clouds burn orange as evening turns to night.

Whilst Rose Cottage is suitable for children and dogs, we would like to forewarn guests that the outside garden is not secure and has low walls. Guests should take extra care when staying at the property with children and dogs.

Families with young children should note that there is an escape window in the master bedroom at floor level which can be opened fully in an emergency. Children should not therefore be left unsupervised in the master bedroom.

The Neighborhood:
Thropton is a hamlet in Northumberland, located on the River Coquet, and its tributary Wreigh Burn. The hamlet is situated just two miles west of the town of Rothbury.

Rothbury is at the heart of Northumberland’s countryside. This traditional market town is a peaceful and picturesque haven, which is built of the same mellow sandstone as the rolling hills that surround it.

Rothbury Golf Club which is only 2.5 miles away from the property and is an 18-hole golf course that accepts visitors.

A third of a mile from the cottage to the west of Thropton is a garage and shop with a butchers and bakery section so you'll be able to purchase all of the essentials for your stay nearby.

The nearest train station to Thropton can be found in Acklington where there are routes to Carlisle, Cramlington, Haltwhistle, Hexham, Morpeth, Newcastle and Prudhoe.

A private apartment set in the heart of the picturesque village of Rothbury. Ideal if you're looking for a private hideaway that's only 100m from the local pubs, shops and cafes.

This flat is a part of a brand new property that we built from scratch in 2019. It was a 3 year build that has been a labour of love but something we're very proud of.
The space
The Hideaway was initially built for when we have family and friends to stay so we've done it up and furnished it to the highest standards. We realised that we don't actually have guests more than 5 or 6 times a year so we thought why not let it out to those that want to visit? So that's what we’ve done.

The apartment is split on two levels, the ground floor comprises the entrance lobby, bathroom and kitchen with the upstairs being an open-plan living room and bedroom.

The downstairs is clean and functional. The bathroom has a great, powerful shower, the kitchen has decent, good quality facilities (microwave, hob, dishwasher, toaster, nespesso coffee maker, washing machine, tumble-dryer etc) but there's no windows - it's perfectly fine but you're not going to travel all the way to Rothbury for this.

Upstairs, however, is a completely different matter. It's a beautiful open-plan living room and bedroom. It's light and airy but completely private and secluded. It's got a lovely king-size memory foam mattress, a huge (overly expensive) sofa and 50" internet-ready Samsung TV - which you don't even have to leave the bed to enjoy. When its empty I sometimes just go and sit-in there, put the TV on, have a coffee and wish my life was this calm and simple all the time. It genuinely is a lovely relaxing place where you can forget about the real world for a week.

The historic town of Rothbury offers picturesque surroundings, beautiful scenery and numerous activities in the form of walking and cycling routes, fishing, bird watching, golf, climbing and swimming pool. Positioned in the centre of Northumberland, Rothbury is known as the Capital of Coquetdale.

Rothbury and the surrounding area host many events throughout the year. They include a Traditional Music Festival held in July, a Round Table Street Fair in May, Cumberland Wrestling Competition in September and the Alwinton Border Shepherds Show in October. Live music is frequently played within the local hotels at the weekend.
Nearby attractions include Cragside House, Gardens and Estate, former home of the Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong. Situated about two miles from Rothbury this National Trust run establishment is well worth a visit at any time of the year. The first house to be lit by hydro electricity, Cragside is also now one of the last strongholds of the Red Squirrel.

There is glorious coastline only 30 minutes away, with castles at Alnwick, Bamburgh, Lindisfarne and Dunstanburgh

The space
This single private apartment, with its own entrance, is part of an old Northumbrian farmhouse. Although the farm has long gone, the house is set is spacious grounds directly overlooking the Coquet valley.

Surprisingly well connected, the house has a full 50Mb down/10Mb upsteam internet connection over direct Fibre to the Premises. Unlimited guest wifi access, which you can turn off, if you really need too...

From the courtyard, ten steps (well lit and with handrails) lead up to the private entrance. The kitchen overlooks the courtyard/gardens and has clear views of the valley and hills. There is an electric cooker with ceramic hob, grill & oven, vented extractor fan, sink, fridge, ample cupboard space in bespoke birch ply, and underfloor heating.

The shower/toilet has a powerful 10.8kw electric shower, basin, toilet & shaving/toothbrush socket with underfloor heating.

In the back bedroom there are seven shallow carpeted stairs to the lower level, and three quirky full length bunks, ideal for children (approx. 6 years and over) or nimble adults. There is also a clothes rail with hangers.

Going through to the master bedroom/lounge/diner, this main living space features an imposing antique fireplace with large woodburning stove with glazed double doors (firewood & kindling available). There is a king size bed, sofa, and wall mounted 40" TV with Freesat & Roku. The dining area is set in a panoramic south facing bay window with views over the courtyard, gardens and Simonside Hills . There are plenty of boardgames, maps and books, and a pine chest of drawers for storage.

The courtyard is south facing and offers some protection from prevailing winds. It features seating areas and a picnic table which again all overlook the gardens with river & views beyond. A Weber charcoal barbecue & night time illumination is provided.

Apart from sheds and outbuildings, the entire outdoor space is free to explore. The gardens contain a mix of planting, crevice garden, patio area, willow structures and two wildlife ponds all terraced to overlook the valley & hills.

Please note, whilst children are free to investigate the ponds with their parents/guardians, the ponds are up to 50cm deep and currently unprotected. Younger children MUST be supervised at all times.

Below the gardens are another 1.5 acres of young coppice woodland, with meandering paths.

Overlooking the woodland is an artists' studio shed, with 180 degree views over the Coquet Valley, river and hills. An old type writer and some art materials are provided, as is plenty of inspiration for painters, sketchers and creative writers.

Ample private parking space is available. The private entrance to the apartment is along a level garden path leading along the front of the house to the apartment courtyard.

The Garden Rooms is a private apartment, just 150m from the centre of Rothbury. The property comprises a studio room complete with mini kitchen, dining area, large sofa and TV. The best feature is the enormous window that over looks the garden and wood. Complete with a luxurious shower room and WC plus a cosy bedroom with king-size memory foam mattress bed and internet-connected TV.

The space
Although very separate from the main part of the house the apartment does back on to our family home. It comes with a very small amount of associated noise. The noise is pretty much what you'd expect from a normal family home (only quieter as you’re effectively in your own wing of the house). We can’t guarantee it will be a completely silent retreat but, that said, we're not up partying all night so almost all noise should stop between approx 11pm and 7am.

We're cordoned off the shared entrance (utility/boot room) so it's easy to see which bits you can use but we do have two friendly and enthusiastic dogs that you might encounter on their way back from a walk.

The flat is only accessible by stairs and we don't have any provision for disabled access. We ask that no outside footware is worn upstairs (there's a guest coat and shoe rack at the bottom of the stairs).

Other things to note
Please note: We've done everything to a very high standard, however, the drive is yet to be tarmaced and is a little rough around the edges (we've knocked the prices down to make up for it). Aside from this everything else internally is fully finished and done to a standard that we're very pleased with.
Also, there is currently no curtain on the big window. This isn't really a problem as it would be a bit of a stretch to peer in from the nearby footpath....but maybe keep your pants on when you're in the kitchen...just to be safe.

A private apartment set in the heart of the picturesque village of Rothbury. Ideal if you're looking for a private hideaway that's only 100m from the local pubs, shops and cafes.

This flat is a part of a brand new property that we built from scratch in 2019. It was a 3 year build that has been a labour of love but something we're very proud of.

The space
The Hideaway was initially built for when we have family and friends to stay so we've done it up and furnished it to the highest standards. We realised that we don't actually have guests more than 5 or 6 times a year so we thought why not let it out to those that want to visit? So that's what we’ve done.

The apartment is split on two levels, the ground floor comprises the entrance lobby, bathroom and kitchen with the upstairs being an open-plan living room and bedroom.

The downstairs is clean and functional. The bathroom has a great, powerful shower, the kitchen has decent, good quality facilities (microwave, hob, dishwasher, toaster, nespesso coffee maker, washing machine, tumble-dryer etc) but there's no windows - it's perfectly fine but you're not going to travel all the way to Rothbury for this.

Upstairs, however, is a completely different matter. It's a beautiful open-plan living room and bedroom. It's light and airy but completely private and secluded. It's got a lovely king-size memory foam mattress, a huge (overly expensive) sofa and 50" internet-ready Samsung TV - which you don't even have to leave the bed to enjoy. When its empty I sometimes just go and sit-in there, put the TV on, have a coffee and wish my life was this calm and simple all the time. It genuinely is a lovely relaxing place where you can forget about the real world for a week.

H'yem (Geordie for 'home') is located in the historic 'Model Buildings' in the centre of Rothbury, Northumberland. A newly refurbished, pet friendly self catering holiday home sleeping up to four people in comfort and style (one well behaved dog welcome).

The space
H’yem is approached from the Market Place through a private pedestrian lane that leads on to the banks of the River Coquet. On entering to the property you will find a central hallway leading to all the accommodation, which is on one level making it ideal for those with limited mobility or struggle with stairs. H’yem has full gas central heating and is fully equipped to an extremely high standard throughout.

The Entrance Hall has access to all of the rooms which include: A comfortable and spacious Dining Lounge with a feature log burning stove for the cooler months complete with exposed stonework. There is plenty of comfortable seating for four people with a stylish three seater settee and a two seater settee, wooden laminate flooring and window to the front of the property. There is a 32" LCD television and free Wi-fi internet access for your entertainment. The dining area in the corner of the Lounge has a dining table and four chairs.

The attractive modern Kitchen is extremely well equipped and fitted with a range of brand new wall and base units with wooden work surfaces. It has modern integrated appliances including an electric oven with gas hob and extractor hood, a microwave, fridge freezer, and integrated dishwasher and washing machine. A large window provides plenty of light and a door leads to the outside space/garden area with seating.

The Master Bedroom has a lovely double bed with matching bed side tables, a double wardrobe and large chest of drawers. There is plenty of storage space here for everything that you would like to bring with you for your holiday. The Second Bedroom has twin beds, a chest of drawers and hanging space for clothes. All beds will be made up prior to your arrival and a full set of towels is provided per person staying.

The newly fitted modern Bathroom has a panelled bath with electric shower over, wash hand basin, low level WC, tiled walls and flooring, vanity mirror. There is plenty of free on street parking available within close proximity of H’yem. As mentioned H’yem is suitable for guests with mobility problems, however there is one small step into the property and there is a short walk (approx. 20m) from the parking spaces to the property. One well behaved dog is welcome subject to agreement with our simple house rules.

The house features well proportioned rooms with high ceilings and tall windows. At over one hundred years old it has a friendly lived in look with bags of personality. The kitchen/diner has a range style gas cooker housed in an inglenook fireplace. For those winter nights when you want to snuggle up on the settee the living room has a multi-fuel stove. Furniture is comfortable and homely, if slightly worn, in keeping with the personality of the house. A gracious staircase leads onto an open landing full of natural light. In the heart of Northumberland on edge of National Park with stunning views over the Coquet Valley to Simonside Hills Two miles from market town Rothbury with shops, cafes and pubs Thropton has a pub with good food , a Spar shop and petrol station. Ideal for exploring with excellent walks, golfing and fishing available. NT Cragside 3 miles away and Harry Potter's Alnwick Castle about 16. The coast, about 20 miles east boasts historic castles, majestic beaches, Holy Island & the Farne Islands.

The space
In addition to the detached house's central heating the lounge has an open fire, with wood available in the wood-store outside. A large glass-lined porchway has a settee whilst outdoor seating is available for the enclosed garden and on the balcony outside the upstairs lounge with its views across the valley. Parking for two cars on site. Master bedroom, bathroom and lounge on first floor. Two smaller bedrooms , shower room with toilet and basin, spacious kitchen and entrance conservatory on ground floor.

I thought you might like some feedback on our holiday:

Sawmill Cottage felt like home; a good place to relax in the evenings after a busy day out. We effectively had five days to explore Northumberland but we squeezed in quite a lot. The Sunday was the only rainy day and we spent time indoors at Cragside which was full of interest and definitely worth a visit. On the other days we walked for miles all around Northumberland: from Craster to Howick Hall and back then onto Dunstanburgh Castle and back to Craster. Howick Hall gardens are beautiful and particularly the new sensory garden. A walk to Windy Gyle on a reasonably good weather day was very windy nonetheless! Great to stand at Russel's Cairn and look into Scotland one way and England the other. A visit to Holy Island and then to Berwick on Tweed where we walked the Elizabethan town walls on Wednesday. On our final day we completed the Rothbury Round; a day of beautiful weather and probably our favourite walk of the holiday with the bonus of a starting point 5 minutes away in Rothbury.

This was our first visit to Northumberland. We didn't realise how big an area it is and how many different experiences are available for holiday makers. The countryside is less frequented than most of the other areas we've visited in England and results in more unspoilt countryside and an abundance of wildlife. It has left us wanting to return and I'm sure we will in the not too distant future. Sawmill Cottage is an ideal base, quiet and perfectly located on the edge of the national park and just half an hour from the coast. We enjoyed our holiday. Thank you.

Welcome to “Hectors House”, newly available to holiday let, this beautiful property is located in the Northumberland village of Rothbury, which has outstanding local features along with hill walks and beautiful scenery. Close by to the historic Cragside House, Gardens and Estate which was home to the famous Lord Armstrong, inventor of hydro-electricity and other major Engineering discoveries.

The space
Hectors House is located on the street named Model Buildings in Rothbury and is attached to the rear of the United reformed church and runs south toward the river coquet and park/picnic areas.

It was originally built around 1860 by Lord Armstrong for his workers and used as the street name states as “Model buildings” for future work houses in the village with running water and flushing toilets. Velux roof lights give more views over the Simonside hills and the village of Rothbury.

The main living space on the first floor is an open plan living room with light oak fitted kitchen with electric cooker and electric halogen hob with integrated dishwasher. The fridge freezer is a free standing Smeg unit in Cream. For your entertainment there is a large wall mounted smart TV and free wi-fi internet.

The oak stairs lead up from the open plan living room to the beautiful Bedroom with king size bed with en-suite toilet and separate hand wash basin. The bedroom also offers luxurious bedding, a wall mounted TV and glorious views over the Village and countryside from the velux windows.

From the living room, a door leads into the rear dressing room and bathroom. The bathroom is fully tiled and has a walk in mains presure shower with sliding glass door. The hand basin has a mirror above with vanity light and the toilet has a slow closing lid.

Ample free on-street parking is available close to the apartment, in the centre of the Village of Rothbury.

Take it easy at this tranquil, stone-built Northumbrian cottage with splendid views over the Coquet Valley. Only a few minutes' drive from Cragside House & Gardens and stunning walks in the Simonside Hills, it's also an easy walk to the pretty, thriving village of Rothbury, with its shops and eateries. The space
Enjoying a peaceful elevated position, the property enjoys splendid views across the valley and Rothbury Golf Course below the hillside.

Once you’ve parked your car to the rear, walk up the steps up the gravel path to the entrance and step into the beautiful open-plan, light and airy space with splendid views of outside. In the kitchen, there is everything you need to prepare a meal for family or friends, equipped with two electric ovens and induction hob, fridge, freezer, washer dryer and dishwasher. You can then gather round the table and enjoy the homemade meal. The living area is the hub of this home; it’s easy to imagine cosy evenings in front of the wood burner whilst watching a movie on the Smart TV which features a full Sky package and Netflix, the perfect setting to unwind after the day’s events. Follow the hall to the gorgeous bathroom with shower over bath and WC. The first of the bedrooms is a large bedroom with king-size bed with an en-suite shower room and WC. The other two bedrooms include super-king-size zip-and-link beds (Zip-and-link beds can be made up as a twin on request - please state at the time of booking) .

Outside, there is plenty of outdoor space with seating for warm evenings or a coffee in the fresh air on a morning. There is off-road parking for three cars.

Guest access
Guests are welcome to use the whole space. We ask that you use the dial for the thermostat in the corridor only to adjust temperature and that you do not try to change settings in the utility cupboard. Please contact us in the event of a problem. We do not allow access into the trunks in bedrooms or the locked outdoor box by the bins, as these are for the owners alone.

Other things to note
Families are most welcome, but parents should note that Armstrong Cottage has not been childproofed so supervision is necessary.

WiFi is available and usually adequate, but Armstrong Cottage is in a rural area so we do not have super fast broadband. TV Sky signal may be lost in adverse weather conditions. If you experience lagging while trying to watch a film, it usually helps to let the film download first. We do not give refunds in the unlikely event of disruption to the WiFi or signal.
