- "This is a beautiful place! We stayed at here 5 nights with a group of extended family ranging in age from 1 to 79 and everyone had a great time. The accommodations were top notch. Every bedroom was comfortable and large with wonderful private baths (nice soaking tubs!). The wrap around porch was perfect for the kids to run around on endlessly, which they loved. The kitchen was really well stocked (much better than most vacation rentals we've stayed in before). We made use of the fire pit and the kayaks. We did the hike to Shortoff direct from the house and went down to Lake James a few times. The gravel road was longer than we expected. It was perfectly fine to drive in a regular car, but getting in and out for activities or supplies took some time everyday. Our only wish would have been to have an outdoor table for eating out on the deck because we loved the mountain views and fresh air so much."

‘The Perch’ Tiny treehouse is a custom built tiny house (just under 400 square feet). It is situated in a mixed forest. Perfect for a couple or cozy for a small family. Located in Western North Carolina and close to Hickory, Morganton and Lenoir. 4 miles to Lake Rhodhiss boat launch. Blue Ridge Parkway 40 miles away.
The space offers a screened-in porch with dining for four plus a two-seater bar top by the big pine through the deck. Cook up a tasty meal in the full kitchen or on the charcoal grill.

We can accommodate up to 4 people, however note there is no door, only a partition between the queen bed and the two twins in the living area (this can be seen in the photos). While we offer most of the amenities of a standard American home, we do not have a dishwasher on property. To keep a sanitary environment, minimize critters and keep our cleaning fee low, guests are asked to wash the dishes they have used. The Perch has its own dedicated hi-speed internet for our guests. Please also note this is a rural/country environment. Enjoy peaceful creekside solitude at Roho's Cabin - named for the funniest man to ever live in Burke County, NC - Roho, M.D stand up comedian (and my dad).
Tucked down the side of the mountain on 3.43 acres with private access to Upper Creek, relax and unwind in our family cabin then hit one of the many nearby hiking trails. Only 7 miles to the Brown Mountain OHV trails (34 miles of off roading trails) and Brown Mountain Beach Resort, 9 miles to Upper Creek Falls, 12 miles to Wilson’s Creek, 13.5 miles to Hawksbill Mountain, 17 miles to Linville Falls, 18 miles to Table Rock, 24 miles to Grandfather Mountain.
There’s plenty to do in Morganton (20 minutes to downtown) and Lenoir (25 minutes away). Or take a day trip to Banner Elk, Blowing Rock, Boone, Black Mountain, or Asheville - all less than an hour drive.
Neighbors across the creek are cows and donkeys; Daniel Boone Campground neighbors to the North. Steele Creek Park is across 181.
Our Goodland wood burning (soaking) hot tub nestled high under the rocks with a fantastic view of the creek and valley is truly an epic experience, but it is one you must WORK for. The soaking (no jets) hot tub is sanitized and left empty after each stay. You will need to rinse it, fill it with fresh water (pumped from the creek), and then heat the water with a wood fire (unless you prefer a cold plunge!). The process takes from 2.5-5 hours, but the reward is well worth it. It is a unique experience that requires slowing down to enjoy the ritual of building the fire, heating the water and enjoying a chemical free, environmentally friendly soak. Goodland calls it the pursuit of pause - and we highly recommend it.
Up to two dogs allowed with $100 pet fee, subject to approval at time of booking. Please provide the breed and size of your dog(s) when requesting to book and you will be asked to agree to some basic rules to keep your furry friends and Roho's Cabin safe and cozy.
Driveway is narrow and steep - front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive recommended. Drive slowly (and bravely) and you’ll be fine.
Or you can park at the upper parking area and take the stairs down the mountain. Be sure to visit the rock formation using the other set of stairs. All built by Roho when the cabin was his home.
Winter weather warning:
We rarely have ice or snow at the elevation of Roho’s Cabin (it occurs much more frequently about 10 more miles up the mountain), so it is unlikely to occur during your stay.
However- the driveway down to Roho’s Cabin is not drivable if there is snow or ice. The upper portion of the driveway to the upper parking area would likely be drivable in light snow or ice - it is gravel and not as steep, but it will not be scraped/cleared. Parking in the upper parking area means taking the steps (nearly 100 steps) down the mountain to Roho’s Cabin (and back up!) - or walking down the driveway. Please keep this in mind for visits in the winter. If you realize there will be winter weather during your booked days and would like to cancel reschedule, we are happy to accommodate. We don’t want anyone to feel unsafe.
Enjoy the provided linens, towels, and earth friendly products (such as Grove) - naturally derived hair products and soaps, recycled trash bags, etc. Cleaning products used are also earth friendly.
This is a great place to disconnect!
Starlink satellite internet with wifi is available and is fast but can be affected by weather. DVDs, books, games, and puzzles are available for some internet free entertainment. Cell service is spotty.
Living space is 526 square feet (one level). Freshly painted inside and out; hardwoods in living room; new laminate flooring in other rooms. Several steps up to deck for entry. Washer and dryer are in walkout basement.

Full kitchen has an apartment size electric range (4 burners and small oven) and a new retro style 12 cubic ft fridge with freezer. Countertop ice maker, microwave, Cuisinart toaster oven /air fryer provided. No dishwasher- sorry. Cookware, plates, utensils, etc. all provided. Basic pantry items provided. Rock fire pit available- please check local burn warnings before using it and pour water on it after use. If you see firewood stacked nearby, feel free to use it. Outdoor items provided include Cornhole, floats, camp chairs, sand toys and water squirters, and giant Jenga.
Or jump on in the water - we have private creek access with a rock path down to the creek. For your safety, shoes should be worn at all times outdoors, including in the creek.
BUGS - there will be bugs! This is the woods with a creek - bugs love it here! (Can you blame them?) Hopefully none make it inside, but please expect them outside and bring your favorite bug repellent!
Security cameras are located on each side of the property to monitor the driveway and primary entrances.
$250 damage deposit/hold and signed rental agreement required.
Roho’s Cabin has a short term rental permit from Burke County.
Property is owned and made available by Roho's Cabin, LLC.
- "I absolutely loved it!" - "My wife and I stayed at Roho's Cabin for our honeymoon. We found that the location was exactly as described, and better than expected! I did manage to get us lost on the way in because GPS was not accurate and I didn't pay attention. Rechecking the instructions from the host quickly got us back on track though. Once we reached the cabin we found a cozy little place that we both felt right at home in. The river and surrounding woods isolate the area nicely and provide absolutely beautiful morning views. The host communicated with us perfectly and we had no issues at any point in our stay. The only criticism I would offer is to make the driveway a little bit more visible from 181. Otherwise, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend Roho's Cabin to anyone who wants to step back from the rest of the world for a few days! We will certainly be adding it to our list of places to visit again!"

- "It is a fairly quiet area, I was here on work so I did not get the opportunity to get out in the community. The property managers have been great to deal with." - "Highly recommend Daisy’s cabin for a tranquil retreat. Hosts couldn’t have been better. Everything you need is there and more." - "House is cute, comfy, and clean. Great TV/living area and adjoining kitchen space. Has enough space for our dog to poop, etc. A couple of the houses on the way "up the mountain" are not well cared for but I've found that's the norm for "the mountains". We'll rebook next time we want to stay near Hickory/Morganton."

- "We had a wonderful weekend getaway. The cabin was perfect for the two of us. We enjoyed the great view, whether from the rocking chairs on the back porch or the living room couch." - "Enjoyed the stay. We had a minor issue that a wind storm knocked at the internet but I made due. The appliances are in great shape and the host was very open to communicating the challenges and I’m pleased with the outcome. I’ll be back." - "I have stayed at a few of the other homes in this area for work. This one has the best home for the cost. Just be aware that this home is on the mountain side so it is hard to travel to and from town if it snows or ices. Other than that it was a great place."

An adventurer's paradise, this home is located just outside the Linville Gorge Wilderness near Lake James. This log cabin is sure to delight the wild at heart who appreciate the finer things in life. Delightfully decorated with white pine walls in every room, pristine - yet cozy- furnishings, and plenty of space both inside and out for your group, Shortoff Mountain Retreat will be a winner for anyone looking to escape from the pressures of the outside world.
On your way up to the home, be sure to swing by a grocery store in Morganton or Marion for all your essentials to maximize your time for adventuring in this beautiful area. Unload your groceries and ready your daypacks in the spacious and well-designed kitchen with pale granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. You can prepare a quick and delicious crockpot meal that evening or leave it to slow cook all night and day to enjoy when you return home from your adventures the next day. Spend your first night relaxing on the wraparound porch as the sun sets, planning your activities for tomorrow, and playing a round or two of Pacman or Foosball in the game room.
Start your day out early, with a warm-up hike to Wolf Pit trailhead just a half mile from the home. This 1.1-mile point-to-point trail is your entrance to the Linville Gorge Wilderness. Wolf Pit connects to the Shortoff Mountain hike, a 7.7-mile round trip trail, offering stunning views of the Linville Gorge Wilderness and Lake James from their viewpoints. Along the way, stop for a picturesque picnic at any of the vistas. For more intrepid hikers, the Linville Gorge Loop will provide a variety of challenges in its 22 miles. With paths skirting the top of the Gorge and going down to the various falls and rapids, there is plenty of beauty and mystery to be found here. Hike back to home base, take a nap, and ready yourself for the next excursion.
If you're craving some waterbased activities, drive down to either: the Linville Boat Ramp for some good bank fishing, or Paddy's Creek Area on Lake James for access to easy to moderate hiking trails, kayak and paddleboard rentals, swimming area, and boat ramp. Shortoff Mountain Retreat offers 2 inflatable kayaks, 2 inflatable stand-up paddle boards, and life jackets to enhance your time on the water.
Find 15 miles of mountain biking trails at the Paddy's Creek area with the Tindo and Wimba loops rated for beginners and intermediate riders respectively. The Fonta Flora trail at Greenlee Park is an easy 1.1-mile nature loop offering kayak/canoe/tube access points along with a covered picnic area. Take a 35-minute drive to reach Brown Mountain OHV Trail System (the only area in Pisgah that is open to OHVs like ATVs, 4-wheel drive vehicles, and trail bikes). After a full day of outdoor adventure, head home to Shortoff Mountain Retreat to take advantage of the outdoor shower.
Plan a day of exploring the greater Asheville area to take in the art, shops, restaurants, and breweries that will enhance your experience of WNC. With downtown Asheville and Biltmore Estate just over an hour away, there is plenty to see and do on your “big city” day. First thing in the morning swing into Ingenious Coffee Roasters in Marion to start your day off right with a delicious coffee and handmade treat before making your way up the mountain to Black Mountain and Asheville. Browse artisan galleries and carefully curated shops in downtown or the River Arts District before heading to Biltmore Estate for your house and garden tour.
Please note: Forest Service maintains a large portion of the long and unpaved road, but it is susceptible to ruts during inclement weather. We recommend AWD or 4WD for a smoother ride, but 2WD will suffice. Well-behaved dogs are allowed with these specific guidelines: (1) Dogs must be prevented from damaging/scratching the doors or furniture (2) Please keep dogs off furniture and bedding. There is a $100 per pet fee.
This home is located within Pisgah National Forest. Ladybugs and Kudzu Beetles are prevalent in our area in the fall and winter months, and they will find their way into homes to escape the cooler weather. They are not poisonous and cannot be exterminated.
- "Beautifully situated home with gorgeous views. Easily accommodated multiple family members and enough space for everyone to enjoy. The cabin is 2.2 miles up a gravel road that my family has been driving up to go hiking for years. My parents made the drive in a Honda Minivan, as long as you don't have a sports car and drive carefully, it is totally worth the effort! Peace and quiet and mountains!!" - "This cabin was such an awesome place for my friends and I to stay! It is new, clean and boasted a beautiful location. You really can’t ask for better when it comes to a weekend mountain get away."

We are FL flatlanders, so getting up the mountain was an experience, but once you are up there, this super dog-friendly (dog towels?!) cabin takes you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Other things to note
-We are in a remote area surrounded by trees. Although Starlink satellite wifi is usually very fast and reliable, there is a chance that the wifi may be spotty. We provide a dvd player and a small collection of dvds if the streaming services are buffering.
-As always with a remote mountain cabin, there is a chance you will see wildlife. We provide bear horns in the cabin just in case although we have never personally seen any. We also pay for pest services, but being a hobbit hole in the middle of the woods, there’s always a chance you’ll see a bug or two.
-The trash bin for the home is located near the entrance of the neighborhood (a few minutes drive down the mountain). Trash cannot be left outside due to wildlife. We do ask that all guests bring their trash to the neighborhood bins when the inside bin is full to deter inside pests. Garbage found or left outside is a 250$ fee.
Morganton and Lenoir are open for visitors post Helene.
Tucked down the side of the mountain on 3.43 acres with private access to Upper Creek, relax and unwind in our family. The space
Enjoy peaceful creekside solitude at Roho's Cabin - named for the funniest man to ever live in Burke County, NC - Roho, M.D., stand up comedian (and my dad).
Listen to the relaxing sounds of the creek from the deck or while floating in the provided tubes. Practice the art of pause by filling and firing up the wood burning hot tub - a unique way to connect with nature during a chemical free soak. Relax in the cabin by the wood stove with board games, puzzles, books, and DVDs. Once you are fully recharged, explore the mountains with a drive or hike in the Linville Gorge, go off roading at Brown Mountain OHV trails, go fishing at Wilson’s Creek, or grab a meal in Morganton or Lenoir. Check out all the 5 star reviews - our guests love Roho’s Cabin. 🐓 You will too.
Post Hurricane Helene, be sure to check to see if your preferred activities have reopened - much is available, but some areas are still recovering.
Check out the Guidebook for area attractions and food.
There’s plenty to do in Morganton (20 minutes to downtown) and Lenoir (25 minutes away). Or take a day trip to Banner Elk, Blowing Rock, Boone, Black Mountain, or Asheville - all less than an hour drive.
Neighbors across the creek are cows and donkeys (they are not always in that field); Daniel Boone Campground neighbors to the North.
The process takes from 2.5-4 hours, but the reward is well worth it. It is a unique experience that requires slowing down to enjoy the ritual of building the fire, heating the water and enjoying a chemical free, environmentally friendly soak. Goodland calls it the pursuit of pause - and we highly recommend it. Firewood is provided, along with towels, robes, a towel warmer, and a natural bath bomb.
Up to two dogs allowed with $100 pet fee, subject to approval at time of booking. Please provide the breed and size of your dog(s) when requesting to book and you will be asked to agree to some basic rules to keep your furry friend and Roho's Cabin safe and cozy.
Driveway is steep and narrow - front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive recommended. Drive slowly (and bravely) and you’ll be fine.
Or you can park at the upper parking area and take the stairs down the mountain.
Enjoy the provided linens, towels, and earth friendly products (such as Grove) - naturally derived hair products and soaps, recycled trash bags, etc. Cleaning products used are also earth friendly.
This is a great place to disconnect!
Starlink satellite internet with wifi is available and is fast but can be affected by weather DVDs, books, games, and puzzles are available for some internet free entertainment. Cell service is spotty.
Living space is 526 square feet. Hardwood floors in living room; laminate flooring in other rooms. Several steps up to deck for entry. Washer and dryer are in walkout basement.

Living room offers a full-size daybed with twin trundle, loveseat and rocking recliner, 50” TV with DVD player and wood stove. Small dining area is open to living room and just outside the kitchen.
Full kitchen has an apartment size electric range (4 burners and small oven) and a retro style 12 cubic ft fridge with freezer. Countertop ice maker, microwave and Cuisinart toaster oven /air fryer provided. No dishwasher- sorry. Cookware, plates, utensils, etc. all provided, as well as basic pantry items. Drip coffee maker makes a full pot or a cup at a time using ground coffee or pods. Compostable coffee pods, sugar and half & half provided. French press also available.

Outside enjoy views and sounds of the creek from two levels of decks. Propane grill and outdoor seating provided. Rock patio with seating located closer to the creek. Rock fire pit with seating - please check local burn warnings before using it and pour water on it after use. If you see firewood stacked nearby, feel free to use it. Outdoor items provided include Cornhole, floats, camp chairs, sand toys, water squirters, and giant Jenga.
Or jump on in the water - we are creek front with private creek access via a rock path down to the creek. For your safety, shoes should be worn at all times outdoors, including in the creek.
BUGS - this is the woods by a creek- bugs love it here (can you blame them?). Expect bugs outside and bring your favorite repellent. Hopefully none will make it inside.
Security camera is located on entry side of the property to monitor the entry area and driveway.
Agreement to terms of Vacation Rental Agreement (found under "House Rules") required - proceeding to booking = agreement.

Other things to note
Up to two dogs allowed with pet fee of $100, subject to approval at time of booking. Please provide the breed and size of your dog(s) when requesting to book and you will be asked to agree to some basic rules (below) to keep your furry friends and Roho's Cabin safe and cozy.
-must be very well house and potty trained, even in unfamiliar places
-no excessive barking while inside or outside
-no digging in the yard
-please clean up after him/her outside as they go
-please keep him/her off the bedding and furniture or lay down your own personal bedding to protect ours
-please crate if he/she gets stressed when left alone
If winter weather is forecasted during your booked days and you would like to cancel or reschedule, we are happy to accommodate. We don’t want anyone to feel unsafe.
Enjoy your peaceful mountain escape on our 33 private acres. We have over a half mile of hatchery supported trout streams to fish (with a stocking point on the property), swimming holes, and private trails located directly on the property. Or with just a 2 minute drive up the road you can be in the South Mountains state park to take some local hikes to some awesome places like the watershed lake. You can also find catch and release and wild trout waters inside the park. Feel free to message.

Shortoff Mountain Retreat
A purpose built retreat to bring families together in nature. The wraparound porch offers beautiful mountain views on a secluded 10 acres that bumps against Pisgah National Forest. Snack on appetizers at the hightop table on the porch or play a game of cornhole. Take a nap after a hike in the hammock or relax in Adirondack chairs by the smokeless fire pit watching the shooting stars and listening to the coyotes howl.
The space was designed to entertain with a kitchen stocked with pots, pans, utensils, and dishes that opens up into the living and dining areas. Prepare meals in the company of friends and family while the kids entertain themsleves downstairs in the basesement game room.
The live edge maple dining room table can comfortably sit 10 people, with 3 additional seats at the kitchen counter or seating for 6 at the high top table on the porch or picnic table.
The fast fiber internet keeps everyone connected for video conferencing and entertainment. Don't miss a game with YouTube TV & Sunday NFL Ticket or the latest movies on Netflix and Disney.
We stocked the basement with toys for kid ages 2-10 and the bathrooms has foot stools to reach the sink. We left a high chair, sound machine, and pack-n-play.
The loft has a Trundle bed two twin mattress and 2 extra bed rolls for the floor for flexible sleeping options for children.
Start your day out early, with a warm-up hike to Wolf Pit Trailhead just a half mile from home. This 1.1-mile point-to-point trail is your entrance to Linville Gorge Wilderness.
If you’re craving some water-based activities, drive down to either: the Linville Boat Ramp for some good bank fishing, or Paddy’s Creek Area on Lake James for access to easy to moderate hiking trails, kayak, and paddleboard rentals, a swimming area, and boat ramp. Shortoff Mountain Retreat offers 2 inflatable kayaks, 2 inflatable stand-up paddle boards, and an assortment of life jackets to enhance your time on the water.
Ride 15 miles of mountain biking trails at the Paddy’s Creek area with the Tindo and Wimba loops rated for beginners and intermediate riders respectively. The Fonta Flora trail at Geenlee Park is an easy 1.1-mile nature loop offering kayak/canoe/tube access points along with a covered picnic area. Take a 35-minute drive to reach Brown Mountain OHV Trail System (the only area in Pisgah that is open to OHV’s like ATVs, 4-wheel drive vehicles, and trail bikes) or hit the hills of the snow tubing park in Jonas Ridge. After a full day of outdoor adventure, head home to Shortoff Mountain Retreat to take advantage of the outdoor shower.
Plan a day of exploring the greater Asheville area to take in the art, shops, restaurants, and breweries that will enhance your experience of WNC. With downtown Asheville and Biltmore Estate just over an hour away, there is plenty to see and do on your “big city”’ day. First thing in the morning swing into Ingenious Coffee Roaster in Marion to start your day off right with a delicious coffee and handmade treat before making your way up the mountain to Black Mountain and Asheville. Browse artisan galleries and carefully curated shops in downtown or the River Arts District before heading to Biltmore Estate for your house and garden tour.
Please note: Forest Service maintains a large part of the long gravel road that is susceptible to ruts in inclement weather. We recommend AWD or 4WD for a smoother ride, but 2WD will suffice. Well-behaved dogs are allowed. Please keep dogs off the furniture and beds to prevent damage and to be considerate of people with allergies.
