The space
Sehome Cottage is all new, but when we set out to build the cottage, along with our main house and studio, we were attentive to the architecture of the surrounding Historic Sehome Hill Neighborhood. All three buildings are situated around a common courtyard garden. The garden supports variety of native flowers, grasses and trees, and since deer and rabbits roam the neighborhood, you might encounter few visitors.

Inside the Cottage, you’ll find a comfortable, open-plan home with up-to-date amenities. The full kitchen is outfitted with all the basics to cook full meals or to serve take-out. With smart TV and high-speed Wi-Fi, you can connect with work or relax to your choice of entertainment. Open the large sliding doors to the outside and take in the sounds of birds and swaying trees. But just in case the weather turns hot, central AC keeps the house cool. Step towards the back of the cottage, and the bedroom occupies a quiet corner with room-darkening shades and a comfortable queen. The bathroom is roomy and efficient, with a large walk-in shower and plenty of storage.

A dedicated parking spot lies along one side of the Cottage, a few steps away from the private entrance, and an automatic light illuminates your path after dark

The property is shared with the owners who live in the main house, but the spaces are separate with different entrances. You will see us gardening and going about our day. We are friendly and helpful if needed.

Our cottage is a short walk to the ferry so you’re welcome to park on the mainland and walk across, but it inhibits your ability to drive on for your stay. ***This charming, historic, and beautifully appointed beachfront house features two bedrooms (one room with an attached bath has a Queen bed and another room with a single bed) and sleeps three. The cottage is stocked with everything you will need for an easy getaway. Enjoy the large deck overlooking the breathtaking views of Mt. Baker and the Sisters, watch the ferry, the Whatcom Chief, sail back and forth, take a soak in the deep tub, read by the fireplace, put your kayak in the water, and adventure, or go for a bike ride or hike. You will find yourself within walking distance of the local Beach Store Cafe (just across the street but please check the website to see hours of operation as they are limited), and the local grocery store. Conveniently located only a five-minute walk to the ferry and on the picturesque 7-mile loop which is great for walking and bike riding. Despite the proximity to Vancouver BC and Seattle, Lummi Island feels like it is a 'world away'. The Beach House was built in 1933 and has a long history on Lummi Island, and at one time served as the local library. With a complete Sunset Magazine-worthy remodel couldn't be sweeter.

Beachfront Cottage on Chuckanut Bay

Chuckanut Bay Cottage is just steps from the beach and a close trip down scenic Chuckanut Drive to historic Fairhaven in beautiful Bellingham, Washington. Perfect for a couple needing a romantic getaway, or the outdoor enthusiast who wants water for their kayaking or SUPing out the front door or miles of trails for biking and hiking out the backdoor.

This beachfront cottage is situated on a bluff 40ft above the pristine waters of the Salish Sea with gorgeous views of Chuckanut Bay, Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands. The sunset view is spectacular all year long!

The 600 square foot cottage is well appointed. The main floor is one large room with a fully equipped kitchen on one side looking through the sitting area and out a picture window facing Chuckanut Bay. There is a large comfortable sofa, flat screen,Apple TV and wifi throughout the cottage. The full bath features a tub and shower. The cottage has naturally finished reclaimed-original wood floors throughout. In the corner of the room is a gas-wood stove making this a very cozy cottage any time of the year.

Upstairs you will find one large room that partially overlooks the main floor. There is a luxurious king size bed facing the bay and islands, wonderful sleeper sofa and ample shelving and hanging space. Both floors are private. Although open to below.

From the cottage it is a short walk down a stairway to the beach. At beach level there is a wonderful private sitting area where you can swim or enjoy the calm bay by kayak or rowboat.

It is a quick bike ride on Chuckanut Drive where one can get on the interurban trail and ride just 4 miles north to Fairhaven, a historic seaside village with great shopping, restaurants and nightlife. Fairhaven is also the gateway to the San Juan Islands, Victoria and Alaska by ferry and hosts the Amtrack train station if one wants a quick trip to Vancouver BC or Seattle. Imagine all of that without getting into your car! Go south and find the public boat launch, beaches and access to phenomenal mt. biking and hiking of Larabee St. Pk just minutes from the cottage. Further down Chuckanut Drive are oysterbeds, gorgeous farmland and further yet is Seattle, which is 90 minutes by car. To the northeast Mt. Baker and the foothills of the Cascades offer world class snowboarding and skiing as well as endless miles of backcountry exploring.

Like all the houses on Chuckanut Bay, it is close to the main railway line that links Seattle and Vancouver BC. When the cottage was renovated the owner/builders who live next door, went to great lengths to quiet the cottage as much as possible. If you wish to further diminish the train sounds, earplugs are provided.

This charming cottage is nestled on several acres among old-growth cedars and majestic maple trees. The privacy aspect makes you feel as though you are removed from civilization, yet it is located just minutes away from every convenience. The house has a wrap-around deck, perfect for outdoor dining and relaxing. The property has a shared sports court for pickleball, basketball, and more. Lake Samish is just across Friday Creek Road.

Public lake access can be found 100 yards north of the house on Friday Creek Road. A double kayak is available for your use (stored down by the dock, paddles in the bathroom closet). We have also added two stand-up paddleboards and a youth kayak to the patio (Summer months only). Feel free to take these down to the lake access point and please return to the porch after each use.

This two-bedroom, one-bath home also offers a sleeping loft with 3 twin beds, perfect for children 5 and over. For infants and toddlers, we have a Pack-n-Play portable crib stored in the closet. The large bedroom has a king-size Sleep Number bed. The second bedroom has a queen-size bed and access to the sleeping loft. Both bedrooms have French doors that open to the wrap-around deck.

The living area is fashioned in the "great room" style with a comfortable sitting area, an equipped kitchen, and a dining table with seating for up to 7 people. Direct access to the deck makes for easy barbecuing and outdoor entertaining. The house is equipped with a 50" television and high-speed internet for anyone feeling the need to stay connected.

There is a friendly neighborhood cat "Scout". Please do not let him in the house. Not only for those with allergies, but we need to keep the property pristine. Additionally, it can be difficult to get him out!

- "We enjoyed our extended stay at Orchard House. This historic cottage is is a wonderful retreat and escape from traffic and crowds. The cottage is spacious and sparklingly clean. We enjoyed the notes of history in the decor. But the high point was feeding the chickens, ducks, and geese, and learning so much about birds and their eggs from the friendly, gracious owners. We made fabulous omelets from bright yellow-yolked chicken and goose eggs, and loved learning about the different types of birds and their names and characters. What a peaceful setting, with freedom to walk around and observe life of the farm. No wonder so many reviews mention how kids love it, but we adults did, too. It was a great stay."
