Restored 1950 cottage combines Old Cape Cod charm with modern amenities and accessibility features. Ideally located steps from the harbor and ferries, 10 minutes walk to the beach, 18 minutes to downtown. Everything you need (groceries, restaurants, shops, recreation, entertainment) is under 1 mile distance.
Our 1200sf, 3-bedroom home suits 3 generations, from infants to grandparents, plus the family pet! We supply all the conveniences for a comfortable stay: central AC, WiFi, smart TV, high quality cotton sheets and towels, soaps, paper goods, pantry staples, and coffee for your first mornings. Ask about our “grocery concierge” service if you're traveling from afar. We live in Falmouth and respond promptly with help in trip planning, activities and local recommendations.
When you arrive, you'll pull into a paved driveway that fits 3 cars or a boat trailer. Feel the salt air from the harbor 150 yds away. That's where you'll go for your evening walk, to admire the yachts, to catch a Vineyard ferry, or for waterside dining and nightlife (April–Columbus Day). At the end of the driveway, a white picket gate leads to the fully fenced back yard, a secure play area for young kids or a small-to-medium dog.
Walk around to the front door where you'll be greeted with nautical flair. No need for a key; all entry doors have electronic locks that open with the 4-digit code you specify. If you require a zero-step entry ramp, just let us know.
Now step into the living room with original fir floors, pine woodwork and fireplace from 1950. Your group of 6 can comfortably relax together with enough area to set up the toddler train set or a vacation game of Twister. For entertainment, choose from 250 HD cable channels or your own smart TV app. Browse our collection of books and DVD's with Cape Cod, nautical and New England themes, as well as puzzles and games for all ages.
An arched ship's doorway connects to the all-new, modern kitchen with dishwasher, microwave, ceramic radiant cooktop, electric oven, fridge and freezer. It's finished with sand-colored granite counters, oyster shell backsplash, and brass boat cleat cabinet knobs. You'll find all the cookware and utensils needed for a lobster boil or anything else you want to cook or bake, whether indoors or on the gas grill. We stock a few coastal New England cookbooks and essential small appliances including toaster, tea kettle, Keurig and drip coffee makers, blender, rice cooker and small food processor (chopper).
A second arched doorway joins the sunny dining room. There's a sideboard and table seating 6-8, plus high chair and booster for the little ones. If you're here for a celebration, we have tablecloths, napkins, platters and servingware to host 12 guests. The back lawn can accommodate 20-30 for light refreshments outdoors.
The cottage is wheelchair-friendly with smooth flooring throughout, no transitions to bump over, wide 36” doorways and 42” hallway with LED night lighting. Both bathrooms are renovated with sparkling tile and fixtures. One was designed with non-slip tumbled marble, extra space around the high-height toilet, grab bars, and walk-in shower with teak seat and hand-held spray. The smaller bathroom is best suited for kids with standard-height toilet, original cast-iron tub, and a step stool to reach the sink. There's also a washer/dryer with laundry supplies, iron, ironing board, and hair dryer.
The “Keeper’s Quarters” is a cozy Queen bedroom in the traditional style of a seaside cottage and garden. It honors those who've tended Cape & Islands lighthouses since the 18th century, helping mariners navigate tricky currents, shoals and fog on local waters.
In the “Crew’s Nest” bedroom, rustic wood and iron accents feel like below decks on a galleon. The crew sleeps in bunks, of course, beside a map of Cape Cod's shipwrecks. Both beds are full/double size to accommodate pirates up to 5'7” tall.
At the stern of the cottage, the “Captain's Cabin” is our accessible bedroom with 3ft clearances around the lower-height Queen bed. A vaulted ceiling with beam, picture window and matching French door to the quarterdeck (patio) evoke the shipboard lifestyle of Cape Cod's whaling captains. There's room here for the pack'n'play crib. Note our house is rewired with all child-safe outlets.
Finally, step out on the patio. There's an umbrella table for al fresco dining or savoring a vacation cigar (no smoking indoors please). The outdoor shower features whale tail hooks, mahogany bench and floor that blends seamlessly into the patio.
Falmouth Heights Beach, one of Falmouth's finest, is exactly 1/2 mile from our door. Beach wheelchairs are available with ramp access to the sand. Historic homes and Falmouth Yacht Club are nearby.
It's 7 minutes walk to Windfall Market grocery and Harbor Marine Park, the site of Falmouth's farmers market (May–Oct), weekly summer concerts, and many outdoor events such as yoga, annual antiques fair, September's StriperFest fishing derby, and Seafaring Santa's December arrival. Seven minutes in the opposite direction takes you to more dining options, shopping, Starbucks, and the ballpark of our summer college-league Cape Cod Baseball team. Keep walking (18 minutes total) and you're in Falmouth Village center. Known for boutique shops and restaurants, the adjacent library lawn and Peg Noonan Park are the main venues for local events: from the Easter Egg Scramble to holiday parades (July 4th, Halloween, Christmas), ArtsFest, JazzFest, book fair and street fair, summer outdoor movies and lobster suppers, and much more. Behind the children's library are the summertime Carousel of Light and year-round nautical-theme playground.
Picturesque Woods Hole village is 5 miles away by bike or trolley, while Cape Cod's famed Old Silver Beach and Mashpee Commons upscale shopping center are 15 minutes by car.Our seaside New England town is the best of all worlds, and Falmouth Heights Cottage is perfectly situated to enjoy it all!

- "We had a great stay and enjoyed being close to Woods Hole Village and the beach. The house is tidy and well equipped to handle a family (well setup kitchen, plenty of plates + utensils, linens etc.). This place is a great basecamp for summer adventures or to just hang out at." - "We loved being walking distance to Wood Hole and it's beautiful neighborhoods." - "Our family of four spent a week here and absolutely loved it. The house is charming, with a rustic older half and a more modern 2-story addition. The older half has a lovely sitting room lined with bookshelves, and a kids room with plenty of fun games. The modern half has a large bathroom, TV room, and comfortable bedrooms. The whole place is great and nestled in a beautiful woodsy area of Cape Cod. We were able to walk to the center of Woods Hole (try Pie in the Sky - delicious!!), and getting to the beach was so easy. All the Falmouth beaches and Main Street are a quick drive away, too. Tania is an excellent host and was easy to reach (especially when a hurricane struck at the start of our trip!). We are so glad we stayed here."

We welcome you to come and explore all Falmouth, Woods Hole and Cape Cod has to offer as you unwind and relax in this charming and meticulously maintained cottage located on the Shining Sea bike trail in the heart of beautiful Falmouth!
This home features four cozy Cape Cod-themed bedrooms with full-sized beds, ample drawer and closet space as well as Smart TVs for streaming your favorite shows. Two bedrooms are located on each level. There is a newly renovated half-bath with a fun nautical theme on the first floor and a full-sized bath/shower with a spa-like feel on the second floor. This home was designed with you in mind to create a relaxing retreat so you can experience and enjoy the serenity and beauty of our favorite places in Falmouth, Woods Hole and Cape Cod!
You'll be able to prepare and enjoy a fresh cup of coffee, a mixed drink or smoothie, or save a few dollars as you prepare a meal in the bright and cheerful fully-equipped eat-in kitchen. You can also enjoy a meal outside on the large patio table or at the picnic table. A comfortable living room invites you to relax while watching cable TV or just sit and read or perhaps enjoy a game or puzzle you’ll find in the cabinet. Step outside the front door onto the comfortable covered porch where you can sit and chat while admiring the flowers and watching for hummingbirds. Upstairs, you’ll find a quiet sitting area where you can peruse materials and books provided to help you plan your stay. If you need to do a bit of work remotely, there is also a desk and wireless internet provided.
The back yard is situated on the beautiful Shining Sea Bike Trail. From here it’s just a short walk or bike ride to downtown Falmouth where you’ll find lots of restaurants, gift shops, art galleries, a library, a bakery, ice cream shop, even a spa. You’ll find many beautiful old homes in this downtown village, including the birthplace of Katharine Lee Bates who penned the words to America the Beautiful based on her memories of this area – hence the name “Shining Sea” bike trail. Surf Drive, where the famous Falmouth Road Race takes place each August, is also a short walk or bike ride away. Here you will be amazed at the beautiful wide-open ocean glistening in the sun dotted with beachgoers, bike riders, joggers and the like. You can also look out over the water and see Martha’s Vineyard across the Vineyard Sound. You won’t want to miss spending some time in the bustling little village of Woods Hole, just 3 miles away by bike or by car, and famous for the Oceanographic Institute. It was a scientist from the Institute who discovered the wreckage of the Titanic back in 1985 and this same scientist went aboard the also famous mini submersible, Alvin, a year later, to survey the wreckage – the first time anyone had seen the Titanic since it sank in 1912. Bring the kids to the aquarium where they can explore and touch real sea life! From Woods Hole, which is also filled with great restaurants, shops, and museums, you can board a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket Island and explore even more of Cape Cod’s endless charm. While in Woods Hole, you won’t want to miss the picturesque cliff-side Nobska lighthouse, overlooking stunning ocean scenery. Be sure to pause and capture this beauty on camera. While the ferry boats in Woods Hole can accommodate motor vehicles, you also have the option of a more intimate ride to the island aboard the much smaller Island Queen, located in a different part of Falmouth, and on which you may take a bicycle but no motor vehicle.
Some of the most beautiful beaches are found in Falmouth, including Woodneck, a family favorite, located in Falmouth’s Sippewissett village. This beach, with its soft sand for castle-building, is ideal for younger children because of the way the tide and current goes out in one section leaving shallow areas for little ones to play in the water or catch hermit crabs. (You won’t want to forget a net for this.) As evening approaches, this is also one of the best spots from which to catch a spectacular sunset over the water!
This is just a very small sampling of the many things there are to see and do in and around Falmouth. After returning from your day’s adventures, barbecue a meal on the gas grill and enjoy with your family on the lighted patio or relax with a drink on the covered swing as you plan your itinerary for the upcoming days. You’ll love the many birds, the bunnies that scatter around throughout the yard, the lighting, flowers, and the peace and tranquility this home offers in the midst of the hubbub of a busy little Cape Cod town! We’ve created a “home away from home” for you where everything is just right – not too big, not too small, but just right! Come and see why we love it here so much!
- "My family and I had a fun week in Falmouth. Bike riding/ walking the trail right in our backyard, beautiful beaches, fun evenings in the village, relaxing on the patio out back. All made for a vacation that was perfect. Hostess was friendly and very accommodating. I would recommend this property to my friends." - "This place is well equipped and Robin did a terrific explanation of how to optimize the experience. Being on the bike path was better than we could imagine. Road every day. The beach is only minutes away. There are two outside tables for dining, but the glider was by far the primary choice."

About this space
Pristine location, right in front of a fresh water pond. The cottage has the feeling of being inside a tree house. Secluded, private space with a spacious open view.
The space
Charming cabin dating back to 1930, facing fresh water pond. Nowadays because of wet land regulations nothing can be built this close to a body of water anymore. Stay at a furnished private studio, detached and secluded about 55 yards from main house. Completely remodeled in a streamlined , post modern decor.
Bucolic setting, more Walden Pond than Jersey Shore. Shaded deck under tree faces pond inhabited by ducks, bullfrogs, snapping turtles, bunnies and two swans . No swimming allowed.
Queen size Nesttun bed from Ikea, with foam mattress plus padding, sleeps two height-and-weight proportionate adults.
Efficiency kitchen with cook top, under the counter fridge on the small side (with freezer box), microwave, toaster oven.
Full bathroom with shower stall.
Parking on premises.
Two blocks from Main Street (offering several restaurants, bars and shopping) and public library. Wi-Fi available. Walk to beach, bring your bikes (or rent them) as we have a beautiful, scenic, well maintained bike path.
Overall aesthetic is simplicity, solitude and communing with nature. If you are used to the pampering of a W type hotel or the impersonal surroundings of the Residence Inn, this might not be the place for you.
If you want to stay in a sleepy, energy efficient, clean , private place in a dream location, where time is punctuated by the sounds of nature (bull frog choir in July) you have found your place. One caveat: please post a clear picture of your face or you won't get a response..
Please read house rules before requesting a reservation.
Thank you.

Other things to note
Pine Knot Cottage was built and named by Cornelia Clapp in 1920 who was one of the first researchers at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, and a prominent zoologist in her time. In recognition of the accomplishments of women in the founding years of MBL, the esteemed Lillie Building Auditorium that has hosted numerous Nobel Prize scientists, has been renamed Cornelia Clapp Auditorium. She was a professor at Mount Holy Oak College and was honored by having buildings and lab areas named after her on that campus during her lifetime. A tribute to her research and contribution to zoology can be found cast in our cottage fireplace where Clapp's illustrious Opsanus Tau (the oyster toadfish :) is set in stone. This fascinating species continues to this day to provide information toward the study of balance, muscle functions and diabetes to name just a few important research areas. Clapp has been attributed to providing this unusual fish with its specific scientific name. Two Woods Hole toadfish were even nominated to go into space with John Glen in 1995 to study issues of balance in space!!! Quite an honor and much was learned from the fish upon their safe return to planet Earth.
