The neighborhood is fairly quiet, and street parking is readily available, though it does get additional traffic during services at the 2 churches on either side of the property. We were able to park 2 vehicles throughout our stay without any difficulty. The home itself is very quiet, and the environmental controls work VERY well. (COLD A/C and good airflow.) The only item of concern we noted were the stairs to the 2nd floor are very steep, and upstairs may be difficult for those less mobile to access. Also the claw foot tub downstairs, and copper tub upstairs could prove challenging to those with mobility issues. These items did NOT detract from our stay, ( and my daughter LOVED soaking in the tall copper tub,) but are mentioned mere"

- "The interior of the house was fine. Some low ceilings in the stairwell and upstairs bedroom but nothing major. The front of the house faces an industrial area while the back/side face some other houses that aren’t necessarily as well kept. Again, nothing that would keep me from staying. We got in Friday, got situated and went to dinner. Shortly after returning that night we noticed that the vent was blowing cold air and realized that the furnace wasn’t working, kind of an issue as it was the coldest (and busiest) weekend of the year in Indy. EVERY hotel in the area was booked so we couldn’t leave, not to mention that we’d already paid for the house through Monday. The furnace was “fixed” the first time on Saturday afternoon around 2:30pm. It went out again that night around 11pm and when we went to sleep the temperature in the house was 60 degrees. Sunday morning we woke up to the house being 54 degrees, so after showering in the freezing house we went shopping simply to get warmed up. Supposedly the furnace was fixed again around 5pm Sunday but it must’ve only been working properly for a short time because it was 50 degrees in the house when we got home that night. I let the contact at the property know and also reached out when we woke up and discovered that it was only 40 degrees in the house and some of faucets weren’t working (probably frozen pipes since it was “real feel” -20 outside). If the house would’ve had heat it would’ve been fine for what we needed it for. "

Welcome to the Red Thread Retreat! We are located in Amish Country in Middlebury, Indiana. We are about 5.5 miles from the Middlebury exit on the Indiana Toll Road (80/90) Come visit our rural Dawdy Haus (an Amish term for a home on your property where aging relatives live). We are surrounded on the North, East, and West by Amish neighbors and their livestock. It's a beautiful and serene place to be. We are close to the big flea market in Shipshewana (7 miles) and to Notre Dame (about 35 miles) and the Pumpkin Vine Bike Trail (1.5 miles) and about 6 miles from exit 107 on the Indiana toll road.
The space
From the parking area, there are 3 steps up to the porch and the home is all on one level. With 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, you have space to bring your family for a relaxing stay. We do not have central A/C but we do have window units.
Both bedrooms have a place to hang your clothes with hangers and some drawers for your clothes. We provide bed linens and towels for the bathrooms. If you or anyone in your party use products that will stain or bleach the pillowcases or linens you are encouraged to bring your own or you will be charged to replace things that your party stains/bleaches. We do not provide stained linens to our guests. The first bedroom has a Queen bed and a bathroom with a shower/tub. The second bedroom has 3 twin beds and an attached bathroom with a shower stall only for those needing a walk-in shower instead of stepping over a tub. The living room has a sleeper sofa with a full-size mattress with a mattress topper for added comfort. The haus has a full kitchen with stove, refrigerator, microwave, air fryer, blender, small food processor, coffee make and Keurig. The haus does NOT have a washer/dryer. This haus is above the detached garage that we do not park in when we have guests. The Owners do live next door on the property so we can quickly address any needs or concerns you may have.

This is a non-smoking home, and we do NOT allow pets. We live in a separate home on the property, and we have small dogs and an indoor/outdoor cat, that do not appreciate new friends. There is a $300 fee if you bring in a pet or claim it is a Service animal and it is not. Service animals may not be left in the home alone at any time. If you bring in a pet, you need to leave with no refund on the remainder of your stay.

We do have children and dogs who like to play outside and there may be some normal noise when quiet hours are not in effect.
Hair dye/color and self tanner are not allowed to be used in our home.

Illegal drugs (Marijuana is not legal in Indiana), and underage drinking are prohibited in our home/on the property.

We do not have central air-conditioning, but do have window units.

We do have well water and a septic tank. Because of the septic system, you may only drive/park on the driveway, not the grass.

This is a rural home, located around farms with animals. Bugs and other wildlife will be encountered here. We have a family of rabbits living nearby that often visit. You will also see horses, cows, and other livestock that may occasionally escape from their pastures and end up in our yard. With so many farms nearby, and horses on the road, you may smell manure from time to time. As with many rural areas, cell service is not guaranteed depending on your provider. Also the wi-fi goes out from time to time. If these things are deal breakers for you, this may not be the property for you.

We do not charge a cleaning fee unless you leave the dawdy house a mess. Please clean up after yourself, do you dishes, wipe up spills, throw away your trash, etc.

There is a limit of 6 people in/at the property, including day guests. Anyone going above that limit will be charged $100 per person over the limit, per day.

Other things to note
If you need us for anything while you are here, please message us on the platform you booked from. If we don't answer within a half hour, please call our cell phones.

Trailers, RVs, tents, boats, etc may not be parked at our property. They also may not be driven onto the property. We have septic in the yard and there is no where to turn these vehicles around. Our driveway is hard to back out of.

We do NOT have a hot tub. There has been a glitch lately where hot tubs have been added as amenities to properties that don't have one.

Retreat laundry is done in our home where our animals live.

After you arrive, we will come up to the Dawdy Haus to verify the ID of the person who booked.

By booking, you agree that refund requests must be based on issues reported in a timely manner during your stay. We want to make things right while you’re here. No refunds for nights used before an issue is reported, no refunds if you refuse our resolution and choose to stay.

If you report an issue and we send a repair person or inspector and there is not an issue, you will be billed for the costs incurred.

The home is exclusively yours, without interruption for the duration of your stay, so relax, unwind, and make yourself at home. Depending on the length of your stay, someone may come and mow the lawn, but they will not bother you.

All TVs: These Roku smart TV’s allow you to access your own streaming services (such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, etc.) as well as many built in channels. The living room TV also has local channels through our antenna.
To be respectful of the neighbors, please be mindful of noise levels between 10pm. to 7am. Any complaints from neighbors will incur a $50 fee enforceable by renting the property.

It is one block from Main Street, featuring so many charming shops, restaurants, and historic buildings for which Madison is famous. Only three blocks from the mighty Ohio and a short five-minute drive to Clifty Falls State Park. We fell in love with Madison and know you will, too.

The space
You'll love our recently renovated cottage, because of the comfortable, modern farmhouse chic vibe. Features cathedral ceilings, sliding barn-style doors to the bedroom, modern stainless appliances, butcher block counter tops, an island made of reclaimed wood, and an antique farmhouse sink!

The living room area invites you to put your feet up on the coffee table and turn on the flat screen, ready for accessing your favorite streaming shows via Roku. There's Wifi throughout the cottage. Use the stackable washer/dryer to stay up on laundry. We supply laundry detergent, along with soap, toilet paper, and paper towels.

Bedroom features a queen bed, plenty of room for unpacking and storing luggage. Windows have shades and curtains to ensure minimal light at night. Spread out, enjoy the large open surfaces, as well as a full length mirror and make-up mirror.

Our fully stocked kitchen features stainless appliances and offers everything you need if you feel like cooking in -- pots, pans, dish towels, dishware, glasses, and utensils. Kitchen island has stools for four, plus we provide tea/coffee and sugar/powdered creamer.

Enjoy an early morning or evening beverage in our adorable front yard. You'll find seating for two under the porch roof as well as under the mature Magnolia tree in this welcoming residential neighborhood.

Feel free to bring your own sheets, towels, and personal items/toiletries for your comfort. Bed sizes are 2 queen, 2 full/double, & 1 twin bed. We provide the blankets, comforters, and pillows. We also provide towels as needed. Since guests can bring their own sheets the beds are not made, and it would be appreciated if the sheets and used towels are washed, but not required.

Each bedroom in the main house has a smart tv and streaming tv services.

The detached “Casita” 3rd bedroom/bath has a mini fridge, microwave, smart tv, and window a/c. Plus a full bathroom & shower.

The 3rd bedroom/4th bathroom in the detached “Casita” building , is not heated thus it is closed from Oct to March. Please ask if you have questions.

FREE candy, cereal bars, coffee, tea, spices, water enhancers, etc are provided.

Great location for relaxing, boating, fishing, swimming, auctions, shopping, auto museums, Amish restaurants, & microbrewery. There are also golf courses nearby, and the University of Notre Dame is only 30 min away.

The lake pier/dock is in and usable (from April/May to Sept) for fishing, sandy soil for swimming, paddle boat and kayaks. Water toys, fishing poles, life jackets, and paddles are stored in the back of the house to the left of the deck, behind two small doors. (April to Sept only). The pier/dock and boats are taken out during off season (Oct-March).

Stone lake has plenty of bluegill, perch, bass, and catfish. Fishing is great year around. Check out the picture I have of a small fish near the pier.

The cottage is fully stocked with books, cable, WIFI, board games, toys, life jackets (indoor/out), kitchen, Keurig, coffee pot, videos etc.

The Smart tv’s offers most of the popular streaming services that you can log into using your account #.

We have well water, but I have installed water filters on the kitchen sink, all of the shower heads, bathroom sinks and a water softer to enhance the water quality .

The property is located on a quite “dead end” street, thus safe for kids, and includes a large back yard to use.

Down town Middlebury is only 5 miles away. It offers several local Microbreweries, bike trails, mini golf, the famous Amish Dutchman Das Essenhause restaurant, nature gardens, parks, local Amish bakery/deli, and much more.

The nearby town of Shipshewana (5 miles) offers Amish stores, restaurants, auctions, crafts, flee market, Blue Gate theater, Dutch Creek animal park, mini golf, Yoder meat and cheese, and many other attractions.

Keys to the detached bedroom/bath (Casita) are located on the side of the kitchen cabinet, near the front door hall.

We have 2 queen, 2 double/standard, and 1 twin bed. Plus one double/standard in the detached “Casita” room.

We also provide a computer monitor and printer for your mobile office needs. You will need the cables to connect to each depending on the type of laptop you have.

From October to April the pier/dock will be removed along with the boat and kayaks, due to the cold water and being the “off season”.

The WIFI and Amazon streaming video codes are on the fridge door.

Trash pickup is every Wednesday.

Please do a light clean up before you leave so the cottage looks good like when you arrived.
