Railway Cottage is the perfect location for a holiday or short break on the Dorset coast. We are ideally located in Swanage, less than 5 minute's level walk from the beach, bus service, the famous Swanage steam railway and the town center. 5.5 miles from Corfe Castle. We are a room only guest house and do not supply breakfast - our prices reflect this. All rooms are ensuite with fridge and tea & coffee facilities. There is a key system which allows you to check in and out at your own convenience (1pm check in/10.30am check out) You will receive a text in the week prior to your stay with all the check in information. Dogs are more than welcome. Our rooms are on a self catering basis so we will not enter your room over your stay. We provide washing up liquid/tea towels etc so that you can refresh your tea cups if needed. We no longer have parking. Payment will be taken from your card details we have over your stay - no need to pay us directly.

Self catering 18th century 3 bedroom cottage close to town centre, beautiful walks and the beach.

Lilac Cottage was built over 200 years ago as a quarryman's cottage and is grade 2 listed. It retains its charm and many of its original features, whilst offering modern comforts.

The cottage is 7 or so minutes walk within the town and seafront and even closer to the countryside and walks to the Townsend Nature Reserve, Downs, Durlston Point and Priests Way. Great walks and fantastic views are never far away.

It sits at the top of a short steep unadopted cul-de-sac which is quiet and peaceful. Parking is usually available outside of the cottage although during busy times this cannot be certain. There are local roads behind the cottage which have easy parking and there is a short footpath that takes you to Lilac Cottage.

From the flag-stoned porch, the front door leads into a small hall with the sitting room directly off. This cosy room has a bay window and a working fireplace. There is a sofa, armchairs, TV, video/DVD, hi-fi with CD player. The room is stocked with books, and games. Fast WiFi is included with your booking.

The kitchen/dining room leads off from the hall. This is a large room, full of character and includes an old fireplace. There is a built-in electric oven and hob, a washing machine, dishwasher, fridge freezer and microwave. The cupboards are extremely well stocked with everything you are likely to need from a tea cosy to a cooler box and flask! The large pine dining table is situated by the original window seat overlooking the garden.

The modern bathroom is on the ground floor off of the hall. The white suite includes a bath with shower over (not for very tall people as the ceilings are quite low!), and heated ladder towel radiator.

Beyond the kitchen is a small second sitting room (the garden room), where you will find some comfortable wicker furniture.

The cottage stairs (with child gates both top and bottom) rise from the kitchen. There are three bedrooms, two doubles and a single with pull out second single bed. All beds have mattress protectors, duvets and plenty of pillows, all of which are a mix of feather and synthetic.

However, you will need to bring your own bed linen and towels.

There is a hairdryer.

For babies, there is a travel cot, highchair and fireguard. There is plenty of room in any of the bedrooms for the cot.

The large garden is secure and walled, mainly paved in Purbeck stone, with flower borders -and the Lilac tree! There are views of the downs over the rooftops. There is a sun terrace with dining table, and a barbecue.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Lilac Cottage is welcoming at any time of the year and is particularly warm and cosy during the winter months. Both gas central heating and electricity are included in the rental.

Being non smokers ourselves, and for the comfort of other holiday makers, we request that you do not smoke inside the cottage.

The cottage has a small outside courtyard accessible from the kitchen stable door perfect for Alfresco dining.

The South West Coastal walk runs through Swanage, and Durlston Castle and Country Park are a 30 minute walk from the cottage. The cottage boasts 1 parking space. The property had everything we needed for 3 adults and 2 kids (Inc washing machine and drier after a particularly muddy walk to Chapman's Pool). The main living space is great, centred around a large dining table with double height ceiling. The kids commandeered the mezzanine for iPad watching which left the main lounge and dining area for adult usage. We made use of the HDMI for the main TV and the amazing Wifi for evening TV watching via Chromecast. If you don't have kids and actually want to go out in the evenings (!) the property is ideally located for pubs and restaurants. Even so, we took advantage of Castaways for a family meal out and Fish Plaice for a Friday night takeaway feast. Both 2 mins walk! We have visited Swanage before and would recommend for young families - there is enough to do in the town and by the beach (with a nice combination of shops and activities, not just arcades) but plenty to do in the locality as well. If you are walkers, we recommend the Old Harry's Rocks walk (especially the "double view" of Poole Harbour one way and Swanage Bay the other, on Ballard's Down). Early morning runs along the beach also a highlight of our stay for one member of the family."

Town: The classic seaside resort of Swanage is right at the eastern end of Dorset’s famous Jurassic Coast, on the celebrated Isle of Purbeck and is probably best known for its wonderful, gently shelving golden sands. The town offers plenty of shops, good pubs and restaurants, some of which specialise in locally caught seafood, and is also well known for its annual jazz festival, which takes place each July. The attractive, Victorian wooden pier offers a great place for a stroll or try fishing, and often used a departure point for divers, it’s a wonderful place to watch the world pass by. The historic Swanage Railway has its terminus in the town and regular nostalgic steam engine trips take tourists for a picturesque 6-mile journey, chugging through lovely countryside to stop just beyond the romantic ruin of Corfe Castle. Nearby Durlston Country Park offers a lovely day out with spectacular coastal walks, dolphin spotting and wildlife watching, together with comfortable viewing points and a well-stocked cafe for a treat after all the fresh air. - "Had a nice week at the cottage. Very centrally located for exploring the area or just relaxing at the beach. Was a little concerned about the lack of Wifi but the 4G coverage is strong and did not miss it in the end. Dog owners beware of the thorn bushes beside the car park. Our dog took a wrong step and got a thorn but she was fine after little TLC. Overall a great cottage. Very clean and nice view over the hills out the back. The sunsets were amazing as we sat on the back porch every evening."

With outstanding beaches and coastal hill top walks on the door step.

The accommodation is laid out over three floors; on entering the property directly into the living room where there is a Smart TV with airplay, open fireplace, and comfy sofas for all the family to enjoy a night around the fire, steps that take you in the dining room where there are stone steps and French doors opening on the rear garden. The well-equipped kitchen featuring a Belfast sink is adjacent to the dining room where you will find everything you need.

Upstairs on the first floor there are two kingsize bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower room and utilising the space with a washing machine. The family bathroom is on this floor with a rain shower over the bath and heated towel rail. Up to the second floor you will find another large bedroom with a double and a single bed. On a clear day, there are views across Ballard down all the way to the Isle of Wight.

Outside is somewhere you will spend a lot of time, the evening sun giving you a beautiful place to sit and relax after a day exploring. There is a museum in Swanage with information on the history of the town including the Jurassic Coast, dinosaurs and the second world war; there is certainly something for all the family to be interested in. Swanage has a train station with a steam train which can take you to Corfe Castle, a beautiful town with the ruins of a 1000-year-old castle which is a National Trust site.

If you want to connect with the outdoors you can walk along the sandy beaches in Swanage or the National Trust Nature Reserve at Studlands or along the southwest coastal path on the Jurassic Coast. Perhaps a day trip to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door for spectacular scenery or visit Durlston Country Park and National Nature Reserve where you can also visit Durlston Castle an extraordinary Victorian building with ever changing exhibitions inside. For the thrill seekers you can book trips to go out on the water including sea fishing, diving or coasteering. A great way to explore the Purbecks is by bike, Rempstone Ride offers a 12mile, off road track suitable for all the family, Cross via pool harbour ferry, there are cycle tracks all along the coast. Bikes can be stored in the courtyard or the summer house. Hikers are spoilt for choice, Ballard and the Purbeck Hills offer some of the best walks in the country. Town: Swanage is a small, family-friendly beach town on the renowned Isle of Purbeck, at the eastern extremity of Dorset's renowned Jurassic Coast. Swanage is arguably best known for its lovely, gently sloping golden sands. The small town is well renowned for its annual jazz festival, which is held in July, and for its abundance of stores, fine taverns, and restaurants, some of which specialise in locally caught seafood. The charming Victorian wooden pier is a lovely spot to promenade, go fishing, or just sit and take in the sights. It's also a popular starting point for divers. With a plentiful range of coastal activities to indulge in, including scuba diving, fishing or walking along the South West Coastal Path; head southwards to discover Durlston Country Park or northwards toward beautiful Studland. You can take a ride on a steam train through the countryside and explore a nearby, picturesque village of Corfe Castle. For a very special experience take a boat cruise to Poole Harbour to see some of Dorset's greatest coastal landmarks such as Brownsea Island, Sandbanks and the Old Harry Rocks.

The space
Built in 1792, this fabulous Grade 2 listed Purbeck stone cottage is set in the heart of old Swanage with jurassic coastal walks, classic sandy beaches, fabulous pubs and restaurants literally a stones throw from the front door. The Swanage steam train can also often be heard jugging out of the station on its way to Corfe Castle.

The property comprises of a reception room, kitchen with a small cloakroom off. It has two bedrooms, one twin in the ground floor and one double on the first floor. There is a bathroom on the second floor (with a sea view!).

The galley kitchen includes electric hob, oven, microwave, toaster, kettle and washing machine.

There is a small area behind/adjacent to the property for securing bicycles and drying clothing.

Free parking is available a little further down Church Hill, close to the Mill Pond, this is on a first come, first served basis.

Although there is a bath, the hot water tank is very small and so there will not be enough water to fill it, unless it is for very young children, so I am afraid that it is showers only.

We are happy to take children, however, because of the steep staircases and open fires the property is not suitable for young children and, therefore, it would be at your own risk.

The cottage can sleep four guests but is better for two as the second bedroom is on the lower ground floor.

Dunford house is a quaint 3 storey stone 19th c. cottage, situated at the end of a terrace facing other similar cottages across a quiet traffic free walkway. Modernised in a contemporary style it retains much of its original character.

The space
The cottage is cosy, centrally heated, with a light and airy feel - an ideal place for couples or small families. It is perfect for up to 3 adults.

Entered at street level, a small ‘snug’ leads to a lounge area with stripped wooden floors. The lounge is equipped with TV, DVD player, and Wifi. There are views across to the Ballard Down to the rear, and to the quiet walkway to the front of the cottage.

Upstairs, on the top floor, the master bedroom is equipped with a kingsize oak double bed – and ample storage is provided in a large fitted wardrobe. Views are offered of Ballard Downs across the rooftops of the neighbouring cottages and also offers a glimpse of the sea.

The small second bedroom contains an oak single bed and a small fitted wardrobe. The room overlooks the facing cottages in the terrace.

Downstairs on the ground floor, the kitchen is modern and well equipped with ceramic hob, dishwasher, washing machine and full-sized fridge-freezer and microwave.

The re-fitted bathroom is found on this (ground) floor, and includes a new power shower and an under stairs storage area.

The kitchen leads on to the conservatory with a dining table, seating 6. French doors lead out to the garden.

The garden is compact, walled and enclosed with mature shrubs. There are two decked areas with a table and seating for 4.

It’s a surprisingly sunny spot and perfect suntrap in which to relax with a glass of something at the end of a busy day enjoying yourself – or even for some alfresco dining.

Note - stairs are a little steep but manageable for most. There are no stair gates for very little ones. Being a Victorian cottage the distance between the spindles on the landing may be wider than in modern builds.

Also in the colder months the conservatory will need additional heating provided by the fan heater and electric heater to make it a useable eating area.

Sorry no pets allowed. Strictly no smoking or vaping property, anywhere on the premises.

The property has a large eat-in kitchen, ideal for relaxing family mealtimes, and a cosy spacious lounge. The house dates back to the 17th century, and was originally a stone cutter’s yard, and later a police station. The kitchen is believed to be the original police cell. The property has recently been refurbished in 2022 within keeping of the original features. You can see this from the exposed beams, open fireplaces, flag stones and stonework which have been expertly renovated back to their former glory. With outstanding beaches and coastal hill top walks on the door step..

There several stone steps and drystone walls outside and multiple levels inside. The house may not be suitable for those with mobility restrictions.
The house is at the junction of High Street and Court Road on the right when arriving from the town centre. You can use the drop down kerb outside for loading and unloading. There is unrestricted free parking a few metres further up the high street or in local side streets. Parking is easier before 4pm week days, in addition the main car park is a few minutes walk away.

Other things to note
The town, beaches and southwest coast path are within easy walking distance and you should not need the car once arrived unless leaving the town.

The accommodation is laid out over three floors; on entering the property directly into the living room where there is a Smart TV with airplay, open fireplace, and comfy sofas for all the family to enjoy a night around the fire, steps that take you in the dining room where there are more stone steps and French doors opening on the rear garden. The well-equipped kitchen featuring a Belfast sink is adjacent to the dining room where you will find everything you need as well as access to the rear walled courtyard and side gate to the street.
Upstairs on the first floor there are two kingsize bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower room and utilising the space with a washing machine. The family bathroom is on this floor with a rain shower over the bath and heated towel rail. Up to the second floor you will find another large bedroom with a double and a single bed. On a clear day, there are views across Ballard down all the way to the Isle of Wight.
Outside is somewhere you will spend a lot of time, the evening sun giving you a beautiful place to sit and relax after a day exploring. There is a museum in Swanage with information on the history of the town including the Jurassic Coast, dinosaurs and the second world war; there is certainly something for all the family to be interested in. Swanage has a train station with a steam train which can take you to Corfe Castle, a beautiful town with the ruins of a 1000-year-old castle which is a National Trust site.
If you want to connect with the outdoors you can walk along the sandy beaches in Swanage or the National Trust Nature Reserve at Studlands or along the southwest coastal path on the Jurassic Coast. Perhaps a day trip to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door for spectacular scenery or visit Durlston Country Park and National Nature Reserve where you can also visit Durlston Castle an extraordinary Victorian building with ever changing exhibitions inside. For the thrill seekers you can book trips to go out on the water including sea fishing, diving or coasteering. A great way to explore the Purbecks is by bike, Rempstone Ride offers a 12mile, off road track suitable for all the family, Cross via pool harbour ferry, there are cycle tracks all along the coast. Bikes can be stored in the courtyard or the summer house. Hikers are spoilt for choice, Ballard and the Purbeck Hills offer some of the best walks in the country. Other nearby days out include Brownsea Island, Studland Bay, Arne Nature Reserve, Monkey World, Bovington Tank Museum, The Blue Pool, Dorset Adventure Park, Farmer Palmers and so much more.
