While this property is new to VRBO in 2025, we are not new to hosting. We loved our first cottage (VRBO #2249821; 9.8/10 based on 48 reviews) but when our neighbors decided to sell their cottage, we couldn't pass up the opportunity for a larger space on the same street. We're working to make this one our own and continue creating memories, even with it's quirks (unlevel floors in a couple of spots). We look forward to sharing it with you.
- "Had a great time at the lake. Very clean and close to all amenities. Enjoyed the backyard and space in the basement!" - "Great property. Close to everything. "

We had a daily visit from a deer that had her doe in the brush. It was such a beautiful town and the beach was amazing. The views of the lighthouse and beach were nice. - "My family and I recently had the pleasure of staying at Crystal Lake Cottage, and we couldn't have been happier with our experience. From the incredible location to the well-appointed house, everything about our stay was simply perfect. First and foremost, the location of this cottage is unbeatable. Situated right on the lake, we enjoyed direct and easy access to a private beach. The beach itself was a dream, with its pristine sand and crystal-clear, inviting waters. If was especially idea for families with little kids, as the water was not too deep. We spent countless hours swimming and building sand castles, creating memories that will last a lifetime. And let's not forget about the breathtaking sunsets we witnessed from the perfectly located fire pit. It was the idea spot to gather around with loved ones and bask in the beauty of the day's end. The house itself was spacious and clean. We were impressed by the stocked kitchen, which made it a breeze to prepare and enjoy meals with our family. There was ample seating and plenty of room for everyone to relax. The back porch quickly became our favorite morning coffee spot, offering a tranquil setting to start our day off right. Jay was incredibly responsive and attentive, ensuring that we had everything we needed throughout our stay. Additionally, the detailed document provided with nearby activities was a fantastic resource, allowing us to explore and make the most of our time in the area. We highly recommend!"

Sitting at the top of a cedar-lined bluff, this charming and secluded contemporary cottage offers open beam ceilings, a wood-burning stone fireplace, soaring views of Lake Michigan, and 105' of private-access sandy beach. Only two miles from downtown Frankfort.
As you travel west toward Lake Michigan and turn onto the tree covered private drive, you'll know you've found a special place. Located on a one acre lot and over 200' from the road, this peaceful location will put you into vacation mode instantly.
The home has two bedrooms located in the walkout lower level of the home with polished concrete floors. The first downstairs bedroom is equipped with a bunk bed and trundle bed (three twin mattresses). The master bedroom has french doors and large, east-facing picture windows which provide a nature view of the property. It is equipped with a queen bed with memory foam mattress. Each of the rooms has a closet with hanging storage baskets and hangers. An ironing board and iron are provided.
The downstairs bathroom is a full bath with combination bathtub/shower, toilet, and double vanity. A hair dryer and first aid kit are located here.
Upstairs you'll find a 1/2 bath and laundry room with stacked full size washer & dryer.
The upstairs "bedroom" is a combination bedroom/TV room, which is somewhat open to the living area/great room. Though less private, this is the largest sleeping area with both a futon and a queen-sized sleeper sofa and has beautiful lake views.
The great room boasts the most dramatic lake views of the entire home and easy access to the deck. A wall of windows provide an unforgettable panorama of Lake Michigan framed by hearty cedar trees. A beautiful stone fireplace runs floor to ceiling in the center of the room, separating this area from the kitchen and dining peninsula. Note that the fireplace has been converted to a wood-burning insert/stove, with large viewing glass for a safe and smoke-free experience.
The galley style, eat-in kitchen includes a 36" 5-burner gas cook-top, built in 30" oven, refrigerator with built in water/ice dispensers, dishwasher, and 36" stainless steel apron sink (with reverse osmosis water dispenser and garbage disposal) set in marble countertops. Take your morning coffee on the outside deck or enjoy it in the kitchen without missing a view of the lake. Plates, bowls, silverware, pots/pans, cookie sheets, electric mixer, rice maker, bread maker, Ninja blender, electric griddle, Kurig coffee maker, french press, paper plates, paper towels, napkins, and well equipped spice rack are provided for your convenience.
The beach is accessible by stairs immediately off the deck, which take you directly down to the lake (~70 feet below). The stairs are shared with only one neighbor through a longstanding agreement made by the previous owner, which we continue to honor. An alternate set of stairs is available at the public access point at the end of Grace Rd (a nice alternative if you have guests with physical limitations).
If you drive an electric vehicle, Level 2 (240V) charging is available via an outdoor NEMA 14-50 (RV) plug, located within easy reach of the circle drive. With "your" portable charger and adapter, you'll be able to charge at (up to) a continuous 50A from this circuit allowing a quick top-off or full overnight charge for your EV. If you need a charger or adapter, let us know in advance and we will try to accommodate you.
Located just 1/2 mile off of M-22; Traverse City (and the region’s 40+ vineyards), Sleeping Bear Dunes, Crystal Lake, Manistee, and Interlochen are each less than 50 minutes away. Spend the week exploring this wonderful little corner of the state or stay locally in Frankfort, the quintessential northern Michigan beach town. Though small in size, Frankfort offers a bakery, several cafes, shops, and restaurants, including Stormcloud Brewing, the local microbrewery. The city of Elberta, which sits on the opposite shore of Betsie Lake, boasts its own beach, several restaurants, and a distillery (with live music and wonderful views of Betsie Lake).
If you’re into fishing, you can fish from the Frankfort pier or choose from several local charters, all with great reviews. The Betsie River is well known for seasonal fishing of steelhead and salmon, but also trout.
If the wind is out of the south, surfing is quite popular on the leeward side of the pier (at your own risk).
The Betsie Valley bicycle trail can be picked up just 2 miles away in Elberta and will take you into downtown Frankfort or you can ride a paved trail all the way to Crystal Lake to the north. From Crystal Lake the trails turns back to the south and will take you all the way to Thompsonville. The trail is 22 miles long in total. https://betsievalleytrail.org/trail-map/
My wife and I purchased this cottage in the fall of 2018 and completely renovated the home over the fall/winter/spring of 2018/2019. New for the 2020 season is an outdoor shower and foot-wash station. The home is available as a weekly rental only, due to local ordinances, though we can accommodate shorter stays in the off-season. Please see the calendar for availability/pricing.
- "We love our August Lake Michigan getaway more every year. Very clean, modern property, equipped with everything you need. Communication with owners (Not a Management Company!!!) is excellent and appreciated." - "We had an amazing stay. The house is really lovely with a beautiful view over lake Michigan and amazing sunsets. The house had everything we could need with nice instructions on how to use appliances. Three kids shared the bunk room easily since there is a pull out trundle. We had adults in the main bedroom and on the pull out couch, which worked well for us. Steps to the lake are steep (but close by public access stairs are an easier alternative). The beach is awesome and we were lucky to have some beautiful beach days. The woods around the house make it feel very isolated and we spent mornings and evenings on the deck with the view. Kids had fun with a tree stump obstacle course in front of the house. I hope we can go back!"

Two bedroom, one bath, comfortable and peaceful...This cottage is ideally situated on the South shore of Crystal Lake, about halfway (5 min. drive) from either Frankfort or Beulah. It has 82 feet of beautiful, private beach, large dock with platform, boat hoist, and is a short boat ride (or even paddle) to the sand bar. This is a quiet neighborhood of small cottages, and there are no roads to cross between the cottage and beach. (Please note that the map is incorrect in showing a road between cottage and beach).
This cottage offers lots of privacy, tucked into woods on a few sides where you may observe deer or foxes. There is a lovely deck on front with an amazing view directly onto the large lawn, beach, and lake. There is a fire pit (on beach) and gas grill (outside cottage) as well as a wood-burning stove. Lots of outdoor space for kids (and adults!) to run and play or relax and unwind. Indoor space is cozy and comfortable, making even rainy days enjoyable for games, reading, or movies. It's a place for enjoying the best of the simple life and making memories to last a lifetime! (And, for modern convenience, it has internet and Hulu/Amazon/Netflix etc. enabled t.v. and DVD player).
The surrounding area has so much to offer with many outstanding restaurants, bike and hiking trails, summer concerts and festivals, water sports, etc. There are beautiful public beaches on Lake Michigan as well as many pristine inland lakes and rivers for floating or paddling. This area has been recognized for many outstanding features that are easy and scenic drives, such as the Sleeping Bear Dunes (most beautiful place in America), Moomers Ice Cream (Best ice cream), numerous wineries, breweries, and distilleries, and local businesses (check out Gwen Frostic and Cherry Republic, for a couple examples). We'd be happy to help provide suggestions specific to your preferences. It's a place where you can do as much, or as little, as you'd like to create your perfect vacation.
** Please note: This beach/lawn is actually about 100 feet wide. 82 feet (including dock, firepit, shed, water toys, chairs, etc.) are private and exclusively for use of the blue cottage tenants/renters. An additional 18 feet on the Eastern side, accessed by a landscaped path on the same side, is an easement access for 2 other cottages (owners and 1 other neighbor). Easement access is limited to walking to/from the lake and/or sitting with separate chairs on that 18 feet. Renters are also welcome to use this 18 feet to enjoy the full 100 or consider it a "neighboring beach" and enjoy the other 82! :)
- "This property was perfect for our family. It was just as described and how others noted it had everything needed. Our boys enjoyed playing in the yard and swimming. Close to many activities. Highly recommend!" - "This was my second visit to the Little Blue Cottage and I hope there will be many, many more!!! The setting of the cottage overlooking Lake Crystal couldn’t be more peaceful and picturesque." - "Absolutely delightful! Cottage was charming, extremely clean and the location was perfect. Owners were very kind & very responsive! We hope to return next year."

FISHING
Great fishing can be had right off your dock on Upper and Lower Herring Lake. Please catch and release, especially on Lower and Upper Herring Lakes. For fishermen who like to cast near Lake Michigan, both Frankfort and Elberta have fishing piers on Lake Betsie, which is essentially Frankfort Harbor. It is known for salmon, brown trout, steelhead, smallmouth bass, and catfish.
On calm days, locals like to fish from the north and south cement breakwater piers that reach way out into Lake Michigan.
The Frankfort Tackle Box on Main St has bait, tackle, licenses and great advice. For salmon, lake trout and steelhead charters, I recommend Power Trip or Tiny Bubbles.

- "Cottage was small but perfect size for the two of us. Quiet peaceful lake, loved sitting on the screened porch watching the herrons and ducks. Didn't use the available rowboats, kayaks or SUP's this year but looking forward to a future stay with kids and I'm sure we will use them." - "Lake is not busy and shallow for kids to play. Tons of paddle boards, kayaks, and row boats available. Only 10 minutes to Frankfort. Very lovely cottage with everything we needed to get away. Thanks Peter!"

- "We really enjoyed the lake the paddle boards and kayaks. Short drive the beach! I wish the grill worked, it was full of water and rusted. That would be my only suggestions for improvement." - "Great location on the water with just a few other rentals. Wonderful for all ages with swimming, wildlife and paddle boards/kayaks to keep busy. Lots of nearby attractions." - "This is right where you want to be. On a beautiful lake with spectacular sunsets, near Lake Michigan, hiking, dunes and fun. New home, right on the lake. We loved the kayaks. Saw herons and eagles. We didn’t want it to end"

- "If you're looking for a small cozy cabin, you found it. Very well decorated inside with many nautical trinkets. Love the Huron Light-Ship. We stayed here, while competing in a sailing regatta at the Crystal Lake Yacht Club. Proximity was perfect, from distance to Lake Michigan, Crystal Lake, and downtown Frankfurt. Everything was within a few minutes of driving. We took day trips up to Glen Arbor, Fishtown, and Sleeping Bear Dunes. We also went tubing on the Platte River. Our family enjoyed the open ceiling of the cottage, and the ability to casually talk over the walls while laying in bed at night. I'd strongly suggest this place!"

- "Great location ! Loved this place all around great place to stay in Northern MI!" - "This home was perfect for our family of 5. Located downtown, everything was within walking distance. The laundry room is brand new and huge. We so appreciated that because we had stayed somewhere else prior and had to do 2 loads right away. There is no yard for kids to play in, but we did so much hiking and other activities that it was not an issue. Nice quiet neighborhood too."

Want to truly get away? Hill Hideaway is a very cute and recently updated cottage that is in a truly incredible location! It's perched on top of an isolated hill just south of Crystal Lake and the home has a stunning view of the lake! Updated kitchen! Stacked washer and dryer! Great lake views from throughout the house, including a very fun and family-friendly sunroom. Provides for a relaxing getaway to northern Michigan for individuals, couples, and/or small families!
NEIGHBORHOOD:
The house is on a remote hilltop just south of the central portion of Crystal Lake. There are several homes on the hill, which is property that has been owned by the same family for more than 100 years! The area is quite secluded and is normally quite calm, peaceful, quiet, and relaxing.
Crystal Lake is one of the most scenic and popular inland lakes in Michigan. The water is very clear and rather cool and the lake is very popular for boating, sailing, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming. Public boat access (at South Shore Drive and Lobb Road) is just a 5-minute drive from the cottage and public swimming access (at Bellows Beach) is only a 10-minute drive from the cottage.
Outside of the immediate neighborhood, the home is just a few miles from downtown Frankfort, which has a charming collection of shops, restaurants, cafes, and a microbrewery (Stormcloud). Frankfort also has a fantastic public beach on Lake Michigan and a popular historic lighthouse on Lake Michigan. The cottage is also less than a 30-minute drive from both the start of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (to the north) as well as Crystal Mountain Ski Resort (to the southeast).
The cottage is also only about a 1-hour drive west from downtown Traverse City. Traverse City is the business, arts, recreation, entertainment, dining, and shopping hub of all of Northern Michigan and it provides a vast variety of "bigger city" things to see and do.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
1) TELEVISION: There is no television shown in the photos, but there is now a television in place. Note that there is streaming only (i.e. no cable television) and that guests must use their own streaming apps.
2) PETS: Pets are strictly prohibited at the property.
3) AIR-CONDITIONING AND FANS: The home does not have air conditioning. (Given the proximity to the cool waters of Crystal Lake and Lake Michigan, air conditioning is rarely needed in the area.) There are 2 portable fans that are available for use if needed.
4) BATHROOM SHOWER: The bathroom shower is quite small. Larger individuals may have difficulty using it.
5) TOWELS: Bath towels are provided, but beach towels are not provided.
6) NUMBER OF GUESTS: Up to 5 guests are permitted. Please note that the twin bed is on a top bunk and best suited for a child age 5 or older. It might be difficult for an adult to use.
7) FIREPLACE: The home does have an indoor wood fireplace that is available for guests to use. Firewood is not provided, but is available at most gas stations and grocery stores in the area.
8) BONFIRE RING: Although not shown in the photos, there will be an outdoor bonfire ring / fire pit in place for guests to use.
9) OUTDOOR GRILLING: There will be an outdoor charcoal grill in place for guests to use. (Here again, this is not currently shown in the photos.)
- "Beautiful location overlooking Crystal Lake! The house was lovely and recently refreshed. It was a perfect getaway to enjoy Frankfort and the amenities of the area while also providing privacy and a calming retreat from the daily hustle." - "Stunning views. Cute space" - "We loved this property. Hope to stay again next year. Accurate photos and lots of little extra touches to make it comfortable. Highly recommend. " - "A beautiful secluded spot in one of loveliest areas of MI! The property has been recently renovated and has a complete array of well thought out amenities. The pictures don’t do justice to the kitchen. Although it’s not large it’s very functional and a pleasure to work in. The hosts have provided a thorough guide to fill you in on all the local restaurants and attractions. There is no AC but in our years of experience vacationing in Benzie Co. the fans provided would keep the place comfortable in the warmest times of the year. "

It’s a short drive to Frankfort, which has lots of cute shops and good places to eat. I highly recommend Stormcloud Brewery for a delicious meal. I also highly recommend staying at this cabin. - "This was the sweetest cabin in the woods. The lake is in walking distance down the hill from the cabin. The kitchen is fully remodeled & has everything you need. If you plan on grilling, you'll need tongs/spatula! There are fans to keep the air moving (if needed). We never turned the TV on, but there is one if you want it. The bed was very comfortable. Towels, sheets & blankets are all included. Plus, a washer & dryer! The kids absolutely loved the bunk house (with 3 twin beds). It was so great for them. If you're wondering if you should book this cabin, do it!! You will not regret it! Have a fun time♡"

- "I rented this property for a friend who took proposal pictures for my fiancé and I. Her and her boyfriend loved the place and said they’d definitely stay there again. Owner was very nice and checked in on them. Highly recommend!" - "I cannot recommend Mike's property highly enough. For two people who want to focus on time outdoors while having a place-that-feels-like-home, this is absolutely perfect. The thing that really shines through in this property is the focus on the details. We have all been in VRBOs or BNBs that feel thrown together with a disappointing/ inconvenient lack of necessities for a truly comfortable stay. The hosts and owners have gone above and beyond in considering and providing necessities (and luxuries) that are the cherry-on-top for travelers. From a well-equipped kitchen that allowed us to easily cook from home, to an outdoor box with firewood, kindling, chair cushions, and a rag to wipe them down if they're wet; everything is well thought out and clearly focuses on a comfortable and welcoming stay. While the space is compact, my partner and I were able to fully unpack each of our carry-ons and one oversized piece of luggage. This speaks to the thoughtful design of the space. Truly, every inch has a purpose. Finally, the thought the hosts put into giving this property privacy/separation was outstanding. We had our own driveway, parking, and a fence that made it feel like we had our own front yard.I have already told Mike that we will be back; my only hesitation in writing such a positive review is hoping that it won't be booked next time we want to come! - "What a great place to stay! I was fortunate to be the second client renting this property and I couldn't have been happier. Very clean, private and cozy. Nice base to use for local short trips or a day-long adventure to Sleeping Bear Dunes and the surrounding towns. This is a can't go wrong rental and I hope to return soon!" - "An absolutely amazing view awaits you here! So pretty and quiet and peaceful. House is extremely old and has character, but needs a little work. Very comfortable temperature, didn’t use the a/c. Excited to hear it had a Temperpedic mattress, but it was only full size."

This cottage is an easy base for exploring Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Our host and caretaker (my father) led interpretive programs there for more than four decades, helping design many of the programs and places you can experience today. He’s happy to share insider tips so you can make the most of your visit.
Fall here is stunning, but the cottage is seasonal with limited insulation and baseboard heat in the living room and bedroom. To enjoy Northern Michigan’s cool autumn days, bring warm layers and cozy slippers.
Whether your days are filled with dune hikes, fishing trips, fall color tours, or simply sitting quietly with a book, this cottage offers a peaceful base that feels both private and connected to everything that makes Northern Michigan special.

In town Frankfort! Welcome to our adorable cottage with a comfortable mix of modern amenities and historic charm, walking distance to downtown Frankfort, Lake Michigan beach, and Crystal Lake.
Located near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and a 25-minute drive to Crystal Mountain with golfing & downhill skiing!
Just down the street from the cabin is Bellows Park, complete with tennis and basketball courts, a skatepark, public restroom, and playground. Perfect for families!
The space
The cabin is small and cozy (~450 sf) and has 1 bedroom with king bed and a sofa bed in the living room that folds into a queen-size mattress. The kitchen is stocked with coffee, tea, cooking, and baking essentials. The bedroom and bathroom linens are 100% cotton and mixed in with vintage linens for a lived-in feel. Guests will enjoy the numerous original windows throughout the cabin, letting in a lot of natural light, but also covered in solid privacy blinds if you'd like to tune out the outside world for a time. The cabin also includes some "nice to have" items like a rechargeable bluetooth speaker and universal phone chargers.
The space can technically sleep four, but might feel a bit small for 2 couples. It's a good fit for 2 adults with kids. The backyard is a nice escape, and you're so close to the city of Frankfort and surrounding water/trails, that you probably won't be inside too much anyhow.
The home sits on a crawl space and Frankfort has water aplenty due to our proximity to beautiful Lake Michigan & Crystal Lake. Do you remember the smell of a cabin at summer camp? Expect that here! Due to the age of the cabin and wet soils, we run a dehumidifier to keep humidity levels down.
The cabin is located behind the main house "Yellow Bellows", which is also an Airbnb for much of the summer.
Guest access
Guests will have access to the entire cabin during their stay.
There is one paved off-street parking space in front of the cabin (about 100 feet away) and room to pull forward in directly in front of the cabin (unpaved).
