The fully equipped kitchen has a, microwave, refrigerator, stove with retro hood and hand laid stone backsplash, and everything you could desire to cook, prepare and serve a gourmet feast, heat left-over’s from the great assortment of fabulous restaurants surrounding our property or grill your fresh catch on the gas BBQ grill just out on the deck. We will make you feel right at home at The Backyard. This is a downstairs unit. We live upstairs. If you are coming to the Outer Banks to party, shoot off fireworks, and generally make a lot of noise this is not the place for you!! We live in a neighborhood of working people who are not on vacation. We will do our best to respect your privacy and stay as quiet as possible upstairs – just keep in mind that 3 people live upstairs and the normal amount of noise should be expected.
If you are looking for a Motel 6 or Holiday Inn type accommodation - this is not for you. But if you are interested in living with the real people of the Outer Banks - this might just be perfect. We are a laid back, fun family and offer to share our beautiful property with you and we are available to answer any questions you may have about local restaurants, etc. Whatever it is – having lived here for over 30 years – we’ve either done it, or know someone who has!

Yes, we love dogs!!, and have generously opened our newly renovated rental up to furry friends, because we too have furry family members (who are located in a enclosed fence). In return, we kindly ask dogs stay off furniture (beds/couch) and all linens, and guests provide dog beds or crates for their furry guests. Since we provide linens, it can take 2-3 washes at a time to get dog hair out, and triple the cleaning time and costs. If you have a puppy or a dog that isn't house broken, has a tendency to chew on things, or is shedding, please keep dog in crate at all times when you aren't present in rental. The pet fee covers 1 dog per a stay, if there are any additional pets there will be an additional fee of $50 per pet (per a stay).

Your hosts: The property is a 20,000 sq ft lot with no residences to the north or south of the property and feels very private. The rental and residence are 2 completely different spaces and neither are shared. The rental is a ground level space (with no one above or below) and encompasses 2 private entrances separate from the primary residence to enter/exit. There are no common shared areas (including parking) with homeowners, except front of yard. We also offer no shared amenities, such as private gas bbq pit, beach chairs (5), umbrella, boogie boards (2), and accessories.
We live on the property and will respect your privacy, available only if you need us! We are a non-smoking property.

A dog-friendly downstairs unit with a studio layout, Salt & Light features a well-equipped kitchen, a flat screen TV, WiFi, a shared, coin-operated washer & dryer, and a mini-split heating & air conditioning system for optimal temperature control.

The outdoor area offers an outdoor shower and an outdoor hose. For your convenience, the unit has a cart for hauling your beach gear to and from the sand.

Linens and cleaning are included in the rate. Linens are provided by an independent vendor (bed linens, bath towels, washcloths, sheets). Bed will be made when you arrive!

Our awesome caretakers, Mike and Lisa, live nearby and are as committed to your experience as we are.

In addition to many local retail shops, fine and casual dining establishments and grocery stores, the cottage is also close to many great local attractions including the beautifully renovated Jennette's Pier (less than one half mile away), the North Carolina Aquarium in Manteo, Jockey's Ridge, Tanger Outlet shopping, Bodie Island Lighthouse, Coquina Beach, and off-roading and fishing at Oregon Inlet.

There is a two-dog maximum, we do not allow cats, and we do not charge a pet fee. There is no smoking allowed in the unit. This unit is not handicap accessible. We have a 30-day cancellation policy - refunds will only be issued if cancellation is submitted in writing to the property manager outside of 30 days from check-in date.

- "Close to the beach and other attractions. Hosts were friendly and accommodating." - "We enjoyed our stay at this small property. The location was excellent, and the suite was immaculate. Please note there is not a laundry room at this property. Additionally, there was one towel and one washcloth allotted for a six night stay. The owner was kind to bring additional towels upon request. We would stay there again; however, the suite was cooled with a room air conditioner in the main room. As you can see in the photo, it was professionally installed. The air conditioner is loud and kicks on and off constantly (like every 30-60 seconds). When we visited the sofa was under the air conditioner, so conversation and watching a movie were challenging with the noise. Again, not the biggest deal in the world, but if you are noise sensitive, it will bother you. The host was lovely, and responded promptly. You are staying on the bottom floor of a house. You will hear the people above you, and they will hear you. Again, everyone was respectful, but it may bother you to hear others and know they can likely hear you. I mention all of this not as negatives, rather information that might be helpful."

This is a BASIC, older apartment - nothing fancy - on the ground floor (below sea level). It has baseboard heat and a window unit air conditioning and a basic kitchen - probably not suitable for cooking extensive meals but great for basic needs. A good place to unwind after a day at the beach, fishing, or other outdoor activities. It is listed with a max occupancy of 2 people, but families with up to 2 children can be accommodated on a case by case basis if providing own bedding and with advance permission. Permission MUST be given IN ADVANCE. No exceptionsA separate detached three-bedroom unit upstairs is available on its own or with the downstairs as one house.

THIS IS DOWNSTAIRS ONLY. Please note that parking is very limited. The downstairs unit has only 1 dedicated parking space if the upstairs is occupied.

This listing is downstairs ONLY. Outdoor common areas (hose and outdoor shower) and laundry room may be shared with other guests if the upstairs is occupied.

This unit only has parking for 1 car or regular size SUV or truck. No on-street parking.

Other things to note
2 adults maximum. Please message us beforehand if you are a family bringing children (2 maximum). Permission must be given in advance. If you were instant booking, please do not book with more than two adults without our permission. We will not allow the booking . Again. If you are more than two adults and are bringing children, you must ask for permission in advance No additional bedding will be provided, but there is space for you to bring your own air mattress(es).

You may have to clean the grill if the last guests did not clean it as is courtesy. Our cleaners do NOT clean the grills. Charcoal is NOT an amenity we provide, but many guests leave some behind as a "pay it forward" gesture, so you may find some but you are responsible for your charcoal needs. In

The unit has baseboard heat and an older window style a/c setup. - nothing fancy! It also has a dehumidifier that you may have to empty if full. We thank you in advance for your assistance with this.

Please note that the wood paneling and the age and proximity to the ocean can have a unique "cottage" smell. We do run a dehumidifier which you may have to empty during your stay. We assume you read this note before booking. Thank you!

PLEASE BE COURTEOUS OF NOISE AND PARKING WHILE OTHER GUESTS ARE IN RESIDENCE. We do have a camera on the house that is motion activated and has a spotlight to monitor parking. The only area that can be seen with the camera is the parking area.

Featuring a spacious bedroom and a comfortable couch, our apartment is the perfect place to unwind after a long day at the beach. We provide beach chairs and bikes to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Our neighborhood features an outdoor waterside community area available to guests that includes a playground , pickleball, basketball, and a dock for fishing and crabbing. A small sound side beach access is also within walking distance, ideal for watching the sunset or launching a kayak or paddleboard.

As a family-friendly home, we ask that guests keep noise levels reasonable and avoid loud partying or drug use. Our goal is to create a safe and welcoming environment for all of our guests to enjoy! We have two kids, and you may hear their little footsteps from time to time or see them playing in the back yard!

Our place is walking distance to the beach and Nags Head Town Park . There are some hiking trails to the Albemarle sound. Dowdy Park is also close. We are located in walking/ biking distance to great local restaurants, ice cream shops, surf shops, coffee shops, grocery stores, antique stores, yoga studios, YMCA and much , much more. The walk to Barnes St beach Access is about a 10 - 15 min walk less on bikes .
The space
Lost on Lost Colony has a great out door sitting area, relax with your coffee or tea in the morning. Coffee maker, microwave, toaster oven, and small refrigerator are available for your convenience. Great access to the beach or the park 10 minutes in either direction. We have bikes, umbrella, and beach chairs available for free (at your risk/responsibility) for your entire stay. We are close to SUP rentals and surf lessons. Art on the walls is done by all local artists, and is for sale upon request. You could park your car and walk or bike to most everything you need in Nags Head. We do live upstairs with the cats. We will either be at work or the beach most of the summer. We will be available to answer and questions you might have while staying in Nags Head.

Guest access
You have an outside shower , and a foot rinsing hose to get the sand off after a beach day. The entrance is around the side of the house with its own seating area filled with plants and a hammock is available upon request. We occasionally have a fire pit out back and you are welcome to join us. The motto is Beach,Sleep, Repeat!
Other things to note
Pretty much everything you need for a good beach stay is available here. We provide soap, shampoo, linens. Just don't forget your sunscreen and bathing suit!
There are 2 cats that live upstairs, you mostly won't notice them they are pretty lazy until dinner time!

They accommodated our late arrival. The property was as advertised...better, in fact. We arrived after a very difficult drive. Lisa said, "It's a very comfortable bed." She was right! The bed is extremely comfortable. The apartment is small, but there is plenty of room for two people. The bathroom is a full-size bath with a curved shower rod (excellent choice!) and a shower head that my husband really appreciated. :Lisa and Cyrus have done an excellent job of utilizing the space they have, and it is tastefully, fashionably, and comfortably decorated. They have provided well for the needs of their guests - and have done so very practically but tastefully. One of the things I look for is the availability of towel hangers. Lisa and Cyrus have plenty, and they are placed where most needed. There is an outside seating area with bicycles available for guest use. The property is centrally located in OBX - almost equidistant between Corolla and Hatteras. We would definitely stay here again."

- "I had a wonderful stay. Thank you. " - "Nice stay" - "Not able to check in since the room was still being worked on after a water leak I was told that had happened three days prior with plenty of time to give us a warning. Check in with 1.5 hrs late after a 5 hr trip. Drywall dust was never cleaned up so that was fun to keep out the bed, no water view or bathroom amenities as advertised. Bathroom was a mess between unfinished drywall, shower curtain too short and only given a half roll of TP for the duration of stay which we had to go buy more. Lock pad was a pain. Not only did we struggle to get into the room but also the maintenance personnel that we waited an hour on but following day the housekeeper struggled to get in both of which stated they have been complaining about as well. The last night there the next door neighbor was reving speed bike past midnight for close to an hour that was shaking bathroom window, thankfully he stopped after I spoke with him. I’ve emailed Kees about all these issues but since it’s been more than 48hrs with no reply this review is needed to help others from running into these issues. "

Welcome to your private downstairs single level guest suite for 2. This property is laced with beautiful gardens and benches for your enjoyment and includes a private patio out your back door as well as a private screened in porch off to the side. The interior is tastefully done in neutral colors and creates an oasis inside and out. In your space you will have one bedroom equipped with a queen size bed offering luxurious linens and pillows. The bedroom also offers a quiet desk space, ample storage under and closet with hangers. The bathroom is much inviting with a full tile/glass door, hand held shower head, shampoo/conditioner/shower gel dispenser and plush bath towels. You will be provided bath towels along with 3 rolls of toilet paper and back up miscellaneous bathroom supplies. There is a hair dryer and straight iron for use. The living room offers a large flat screen Roku for tv, Netflix and Hulu are provided. Your kitchen area is fully stocked with all dishes, utensils, pots and pans. There is an induction burner as seen in pictures with pots/pans, microwave, toaster.

Steps away from your private screened porch you can follow the sand dune trail right to the YMCA that offers extended stay passes for guests as well as daily passes for use of their facilities including the outdoor pools! If you care to walk just a tad further, next to the YMCA you will find Pirates Quay shopping center. Here you will be able to grab all your beach needs at Super Wings, enjoy a yoga class or mediation at the local yoga studio, take a stroll through Cloud Nine a locals favorite for beading and jewelry, grab a cup of coffee at Waveriders or a delicious meal at Greentail's Seafood Market and Kitchen. Take a left from the YMCA and use the cross walk over the main road to access Dowdy's Park, a great spot for the entire family. Enjoy the local farmers market on Thursday mornings all summer long at the park. Walk two blocks east of the park and you will be at the public beach access which offers a beautiful bath house and volley ball court. All of this steps out of your back door over the sand dune!

Guest access
You will have the entire private suite to yourself. This is not a shared space. You will have access to the driveway and allowed 1-2 vehicles, please do not block other vehicles. We welcome you bring your bikes and you are most welcome to store them outside in the carport. You will have access to the screened patio area and the open patio out of your back door. The screened patio area is a shared space with the upstairs occupants. There is a locked closet in the space for owners supplies.

This is a vacation rental suite that has everything you need for a nice getaway! The Nags Head Landing Cottage contains three private suites under one roof. Each Suite has its own private driveway, entry access from the interior stairs, and separate private access to the covered front-porch. The Beach Haven Suite is accessed via the East ground-floor entryway and occupies the middle unit of the Cottage. This is the most spacious of the three units as it has a slightly larger living room, kitchen and bedroom.

This is a great place for a couple looking for a spacious vacation rental!

You will have your own private driveway for parking. Parking for 2 vehicles in your driveway. You will also have your own private covered porch. It is great for relaxing and taking in the salt air.
