We will make you feel right at home at The Backyard. This is a downstairs unit. We live upstairs. If you are coming to the Outer Banks to party, shoot off fireworks, and generally make a lot of noise this is not the place for you!! We live in a neighborhood of working people who are not on vacation. We will do our best to respect your privacy and stay as quiet as possible upstairs – just keep in mind that 3 people live upstairs and the normal amount of noise should be expected.
If you are looking for a Motel 6 or Holiday Inn type accommodation - this is not for you. But if you are interested in living with the real people of the Outer Banks - this might just be perfect. We are a laid back, fun family and offer to share our beautiful property with you and we are available to answer any questions you may have about local restaurants, etc. Whatever it is – having lived here for over 30 years – we’ve either done it, or know someone who has!

Yes, we love dogs!!, and have generously opened our newly renovated rental up to furry friends, because we too have furry family members (who are located in a enclosed fence). In return, we kindly ask dogs stay off furniture (beds/couch) and all linens, and guests provide dog beds or crates for their furry guests. Since we provide linens, it can take 2-3 washes at a time to get dog hair out, and triple the cleaning time and costs. If you have a puppy or a dog that isn't house broken, has a tendency to chew on things, or is shedding, please keep dog in crate at all times when you aren't present in rental. The pet fee covers 1 dog per a stay, if there are any additional pets there will be an additional fee of $50 per pet (per a stay).

Your hosts: The property is a 20,000 sq ft lot with no residences to the north or south of the property and feels very private. The rental and residence are 2 completely different spaces and neither are shared. The rental is a ground level space (with no one above or below) and encompasses 2 private entrances separate from the primary residence to enter/exit. There are no common shared areas (including parking) with homeowners, except front of yard. We also offer no shared amenities, such as private gas bbq pit, beach chairs (5), umbrella, boogie boards (2), and accessories.

A dog-friendly downstairs unit with a studio layout, Salt & Light features a well-equipped kitchen, a flat screen TV, WiFi, a shared, coin-operated washer & dryer, and a mini-split heating & air conditioning system for optimal temperature control.

The outdoor area offers an outdoor shower and an outdoor hose. For your convenience, the unit has a cart for hauling your beach gear to and from the sand.

Linens and cleaning are included in the rate. Linens are provided by an independent vendor (bed linens, bath towels, washcloths, sheets). Bed will be made when you arrive!

Our awesome caretakers, Mike and Lisa, live nearby and are as committed to your experience as we are.

In addition to many local retail shops, fine and casual dining establishments and grocery stores, the cottage is also close to many great local attractions including the beautifully renovated Jennette's Pier (less than one half mile away), the North Carolina Aquarium in Manteo, Jockey's Ridge, Tanger Outlet shopping, Bodie Island Lighthouse, Coquina Beach, and off-roading and fishing at Oregon Inlet.

There is a two-dog maximum, we do not allow cats, and we do not charge a pet fee. There is no smoking allowed in the unit. This unit is not handicap accessible. We have a 30-day cancellation policy - refunds will only be issued if cancellation is submitted in writing to the property manager outside of 30 days from check-in date.

- "Close to the beach and other attractions. Hosts were friendly and accommodating." - "We enjoyed our stay at this small property. The location was excellent, and the suite was immaculate. Please note there is not a laundry room at this property. Additionally, there was one towel and one washcloth allotted for a six night stay. The owner was kind to bring additional towels upon request. We would stay there again; however, the suite was cooled with a room air conditioner in the main room. As you can see in the photo, it was professionally installed. The air conditioner is loud and kicks on and off constantly (like every 30-60 seconds). When we visited the sofa was under the air conditioner, so conversation and watching a movie were challenging with the noise. Again, not the biggest deal in the world, but if you are noise sensitive, it will bother you. The host was lovely, and responded promptly. You are staying on the bottom floor of a house. You will hear the people above you, and they will hear you. Again, everyone was respectful, but it may bother you to hear others and know they can likely hear you. I mention all of this not as negatives, rather information that might be helpful."

- "Had a wonderful time staying here. Had communication with the hostess very openly and honestly. She was so super nice. It was the perfect room for my boyfriend and I. Plus it’s kinda in the middle of everything, just a short walk from the sound, a short bike ride/drive over the the beach and close to so many restaurants. Will definitely be staying again the next time it’s just us! Thank you so much!!!" - "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was very nice and cozy with great aesthetics. All we needed was right there on the premises. The location was perfect we were close to everything. We were only a few minutes (literally) from the ocean on one side and the bay on the other.The hostess went above and beyond to make sure our stay was a good one. We loved that there was an outside shower and a hot tub, a porch swing to sit outside in the morning/evening. Our expectations were reached. We loved the location, great neighborhood (the people were friendly) and you could walk down the road to see the sunset on the water. Beautiful... We were celebrating our 13 yrs of marriage and we will be back for sure!"
