- "We had a wonderful stay. and the house is excellent and in a great location." - "Beautiful cottage with stunning view of the lake. Gregori our host was gracious and kind. Highly recommended and looking forward to our next visit." - "Loved the cottage. Loved all the art. Loved being right on the water - plus two balconies and a dock to look out at the water. I suggest bringing bug spray. Very buggy at night, but that's what you get when you stay in the middle of the woods on a lake. One of the balconies is screened in, which is nice. I also recommend bringing bubble bath to use in the clawfoot bathtub. There was some discrepancy with the pricing - the page said the additional guest fee is $20 and the pet fee is $10, but when I paid, it was $60 for the additional guest and $30 for the pet fee."

- "Beautiful cottage, very well maintained, clean...I had a wonderful time!" - "This is a beautiful, lovingly cared-for property. It fronts onto a ridge overlooking a lake, which was beautiful to gaze at whether the sky was foggy or clear. There are big windows from the living and dining room especially which give a beautiful effect. The area seemed quiet and when we ran into local residents, quite friendly. Cozy as can be original settler's log cabin with a stunning west facing sunsets over a kid friendly sandy beach. Enough lawn space to spread out and play. Brand new updated bathroom, eat in kitchen all just 50 minutes from Ottawa. sleeps six comfortably. there is an extra pull out couch for additional guests if required.
This place captured our hearts because it offers the full waterside cottage experience while living in an authentic log home in a stunning grove of towering ash trees. The clean sandy beach is in a tiny little bay on Mississippi Lake. kids can wade out a good long way in complete safety as the water remains shallow. A great place to learn to swim. A nice little dock for a boat or just to bask after a swim. There is a long gentle open lawn for outdoor sports and enough parking to satisfy extra daytime visitors. The spacious second floor master bedroom looks out over the lake and enjoys a stunning sunset along with the deck, living room and main lawn as the sun sets directly across the lake and washes everything in golden light. Bbq on the deck or enjoy a marshmallow roast at the beachside fire pit.
Mississippi lake is also worth a wee Google search. It is renown for its wide variety of quality game fish. There is no end to the exploration on this large lake which connects to neighbouring waterways. The cottage is situated in a very quiet corner away from the main traffic on the lake so you can paddle around or drift for an afternoon in tranquility.
- "Great location Clean check in easy" - "Excellent cottage - vacation away from home." - "Perfect for our group of 7 adults and 2 kids. We had a great time, the cottage was very comfortable, as were the beds. The bedroom on the 2nd floior is large yet cosy. We had fabulous weather all week with just a few showers. The sunsets were fantastic. The lake is shallow for a good distance from shore - our 3 and 1/2 year old loved being in the water. Ther were a lot of water toys for both kids. We took the canoe out several times. We even saw some wildlife - beaver, loons, ducks and ducklings, eagles, and a fisher. Campfires and meals in the gazebo made for special family times. Perth is so close by that day trips into town are almost a must! Quaint little town.7 Definitely thinking of coming back!"

This family friendly and fully equipped cottage has 3 comfortable bedrooms for up to 4 adults and 2 kids. Private, clean waterfront with a shallow entrance to the lake. Great swimming, awesome views! Located in a beautiful treed setting, large deck, heat/AC, wood stove, canoe, peddle boat, SUPs kayaks, BBQ, TV. Fully equipped kitchen. All you need to bring is you! Pets upon approval.
- "A wonderful stay at the lake started the moment we alighted from the car and breathed in the woodsy air. There was a good breeze everyday that kept any bugs at bay. The cottage was spotless with a well appointed kitchen that included plenty of dishes, glasses, mugs, etc (other cottages we have rented did not, so this was a welcome surprise). Comfy beds with good reading light. The screened in porch would be lovely on a rainy day, but our weather this week allowed us to be out on the deck with spectacular views of the lake most days. There are stairs down to the lake from the cottage that feel solid and safe (we stayed last year at a different cottage where the stairs down to that lake were more of an adventure that most people would want). The upside of stairs to the lake is that spectacular view. There are a number of nearby golf courses and we enjoyed the Perth golf course. Highly recommend Foodsmiths in nearly Town of Perth for fresh fruit and veg and other groceries. We had a wonderful Italian dinner out at Bistro 54 in Perth."

Fresh lake air and quiet lull you to sleep at this two-bedroom cottage on the north side of Black Lake. Beautiful sunrises and birdwatching over breakfast start your day before kayaking, canoeing or swimming in a sheltered bay. There are gentle breezes from the lake to keep you cool and a wood-burning stove for warmth. When the sunset begins to fade, sit around the fire pit and gaze at the many stars, meteorite showers and fireflies while accompanied by the haunting call of the loons. The cottage sleeps 4 and includes the use of a Blueair HEPA air purifier (in case any wildfire smoke comes this way), high-speed internet, a canoe, 2 kayaks and an eV charging station. The bathroom and kitchen have been remodelled and the kitchen comes equipped with a microwave, stove, fridge, espresso and regular coffeemakers, dishwasher and washing machine. The towns of Perth and Westport are nearby for rainy-day activities and there's a drive-in theatre close by. There are good cycling paths and provincial parks with walking trails nearby. The lake is great for fishing too. This cozy cottage is a lovely getaway from smoke and city noise and will leave you feeling rejuvenated by the end of your stay.
- "We stayed for 4 nights and 5 days. It was beautiful and peaceful and felt like home. The host was wonderful and had left markers games for my 5 year old. There was wood for the fire pit and lots of swimming and exploration of both the property and the area. Wonderful time!" - "Spent a fantastic few days at Pam's cottage. The cottage is old style but very well maintained and all the amenities are there. Water is not portable, but several large jugs of drinking water is provided. You also need to bring your own linens and towels. The cottage is located in a very quite bay. Water is usually very calm out front even when wind pickup further out. The view from the cottage is money. It is so relaxing sitting on the lounge chairs enjoying the view. But what we enjoyed most are the watercrafts provided. They are all excellent for paddling. Two seats are provided for the canoe. We went to the top of the lake and back and it's a 12.5 km trip. Bass are plentiful in the lake, but all are less than 1lb in size."

Our cottage is located on beautiful Otty Lake, 10 minutes from historic Perth, Ontario. Built on the Canadian shield we christened this 1940s bungalow Chraig a Dwr (Welsh for rock and water). The cottage is perched on a small outcropping of rock giving the sensation of being nestled in the trees. Those who stay here remark on the peace and tranquility they feel looking out the bank of windows to the lake or enjoying the stars around the campfire. We have lots of wildlife around and several Provincial Parks within an easy drive. We have kayaks and a canoes to enjoy the lake and if you bring your boat there is a public launch you can use. Or you might want to curl up with those books you have been meaning to read and enjoy a glass of wine on the deck. Head into town and enjoy the wonderful cafes and restaurants, galleries and shops catering to all tastes. Three-bedroom cottage and bunkie on a one-acre private island. The island, Potato Island, is situated in Horseshoe Bay on Big Rideau Lake. Spectacular water views and excellent privacy. A traditional Canadian cottage experience. Pet friendly. Week-long bookings only.
The Space
Well treed one-acre island including three-bedroom cottage, bunkie, two docks, a small swimming area and a fire pit. Excellent views of the lake from both sides of the cottage. The cottage includes an open living and dining area with a wood stove, small well-appointed kitchen, a three-piece bath, three bedrooms and a large deck. Other cottage amenities include two kayaks, two canoes, two rowboats (for access), water toys, a new barbeque, reading material, art supplies, games and kids toys.
Important Cottage Notes:
About Potato Island
- The cottage is located on Big Rideau Lake. It is located approximately 20 minutes southwest of Perth, Ontario, on a bay on the north side of the lake called Horseshoe Bay. It is a little bit southwest of Murphy’s Point Provincial Park.
- It takes about 90 minutes to get to the cottage from central Ottawa, including a 10 minute canoe or rowboat ride.
- Good fishing, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, boating. Wildlife includes herons, loons, ducks, geese, turkey vultures, turtles, mink, muskrat, beavers, bullfrogs, the occasional deer, garter snakes, dragonflies, monarch butterflies and lots of bird life.
- We'll send you detailed directions as to how to get there if you decide to rent.
About the Cottage
- The cottage is an older seasonal uninsulated structure and thus, it is prone to have the occasional spider, ant, wood roach, mouse or other insect. Although, we do make an effort to keep these critters out of the cottage, you may see some. If this is a problem, you may want to consider a different type of rental.
- The cottage is ideal for individuals and families who want peace and quiet and relaxed play. Although it can accommodate large groups, it is not designed to be a party palace.
- Because it is an old structure, some of the facilities are relatively primitive. We have hot and cold running water, but there is a limit to the amount of hot water that can be generated at any one time. The environmental toilet works very well, but also requires a little bit of understanding and water conservation measures.
- Bed linens, beach towels and bath towels are not included in the rental due to there being no washer and dryer on the island, but can be provided for an additional fee. Pillows and spare blankets for cold nights are included.
- The wood stove heats the cottage quite well in the event of cooler temperatures. Guests are responsible to bring their own firewood, or it can be arranged to be provided for an additional fee.
- Cell phone signal is somewhat limited at the Island (1-2 bars most phones)
- No air-conditioning, but good breezes off the lake and lots of windows with screens. There is also a ceiling fan and two tower fans in the cottage.
Island Living Advantages
- No neighbours
- Privacy and quiet
- No need to tether pets
- Lots of shoreline
- Many different types of landscapes
Island Living Disadvantages
- Time of canoe/rowboat ride (4 minutes)
- Transportation of food and drink
- Transportation of building materials, tools and repair items!
- Isolation in case of an accident (Although there are neighbours within shouting distance, and the mainland shore is about 150m away at the nearest point)
- Travel to the island after dark
Children
- There are lots of things for the children to do, but primarily non-electronic. No music system and television except a wind-up radio. We don’t mind other people bringing these, just don’t expect them to be supplied.
- There are lots of games and puzzles, swimming masks and flippers, a badminton set, climbing, fort building, frog-spotting, crayfish baiting (use bacon!) and other old time honoured cottage pursuits.
Swimming
- The level of the lake is regulated, and can change over the course of the season by up to 30 inches. The water is clear and good, but off the main dock is weedy. We have a small beach a little further down the island and from this you can walk out with no weeds. The sand is fairly gritty (we provide water shoes) and the beach itself is only exposed at the end of the year when the water level is at its lowest.
- The quality of the swimming is good, but not excellent.
Boating
- Small boats may be launched from the landing dock, otherwise there is a public launch about half a kilometre away from the cottage.
- The fixed dock on the lake side on the cottage is suitable for docking boats up to 20' in length.
- If you bring your own motor boat you can travel a long distance up and down the lake.
- You can also make long voyages by our two kayaks or two canoes.
- Horseshoe Bay is quite calm and excellent for canoeing and kayaking.
- Weather can pick up on the main lake, so caution and planning should be taken with longer adventures.
Guest access
Full use of the island including the three bedroom cottage and bunkie. Parking available on mainland for two vehicles.
Other details to note
This is a pet-friendly cottage, so even though it is cleaned thoroughly between guests, we can't eliminate all causes of pet-allergies, so if you or children could be affected, please take that under consideration.
Because this is a pet-friendly cottage, so even though it is cleaned thoroughly between guests, we can't eliminate all causes of pet-allergies, so if you or children could be affected, please take that under consideration.
Bookings
- Bookings are (mostly) restricted to FULL-WEEK rentals, Saturday to Saturday. 5 DAY RENTAL MINIMUM.
- The cottage is uninsulated, but does have a wood stove, so it is available for rent May - October.
Neighbourhood description
Potato Island is located in Horseshoe Bay on Big Rideau Lake. Big Rideau Lake is part of the Rideau system and is renowned for its excellent bass, walleye, trout and pike fishing. Horseshoe Bay is a large calm bay off the main lake.
Getting around
A car is definitely required. The nearest towns for shopping are Perth and Smith Falls.
- "Potato island was absolutely perfect for our family, and we had a fun, relaxing week long stay. The cottage is older..rustic but very clean and had everything needed for prepping food. The surroundings are absolutely beautiful and peaceful, and we felt so mentally refreshed. The kids swam every day rain or shine, we went canoeing, read books, sat around the camp fire, played games, and the dogs had a blast running around the island. As an owner of three small dogs, this was a huge stress reliever for us to not have to leash them all every time they needed to go out and we didn’t worry about them getting lost. Do bring water shoes as there are some sharp rocks in the lake. If you like camping, this is like glorified camping with everything at your finger tips. The kids even loved the week without wifi and suggested we should have a day a week at home without it! The only thing I would love to see is another tower fan or two, as these were life savers on hot days, but were fought over at night. Thank you for sharing your beautiful location with us! We would love to come again."

When you think of an idyllic lake getaway, you might conjure images of gorgeous views, swimming off of the dock, use of water toys like kayaks and a paddle boat, and of course, roasting marshmallows at the fire pit. Barber’s Pointe offers all of this and more. As our moniker suggests, we're on a point, and the view is truly 180°. Facing west puts the stunning sunsets in full view. You won't get any closer to the water than this.
THE SPACE
The first thing you’ll notice when you walk in is the expansive and unobstructed west facing view across Otter Lake. Nearly the entire front of the cottage is windows. What makes this especially spectacular is that the water is literally a couple of steps from the deck. As beautiful as the sunsets are, if you find yourself up early, head to the north side of the property and look east. You might just catch a sunrise.
The layout of this 1960’s design has the bedrooms in the back, which provides great privacy if you have guests or little ones napping. The front of the cottage is a wide open concept with a ridge beam spanning the full length. The three-piece bathroom has a modest stand up shower, sink, and toilet on septic. The entire cottage is appropriately clad in painted white shiplap pine paneling.
At night, enjoy the fire pit, bordered by upright style composite Adirondack chairs. Accompanying the seating is a Nordik-style fire bowl for making smores or just gazing at the flames. Enjoy the dark, or turn on the outside lights to fully illuminate the fire pit area with Edison bulb string lighting.
There are two good-quality kayaks and a paddle boat for use during your stay. You can launch these from the gradual entry behind the fire pit to cruise the lake and take in the bucolic scenery. There's also a large foam swimming mat, affectionately known as the grilled cheese. It's a slice of fun for adults and kids alike.
For those chilly spring and fall evenings, turn on the wall mounted pellet stove for a natural and clean heat. Ignition is as simple as the press of a button. Enjoy the flames as you stay cozy with a book, board game, or conversation. There is also a flat screen television with BluRay and DVD player, along with a wide and eclectic selection of movies for rainy days.
GUEST ACCESS
- You will have full access to the entire lot. The shoreline wraps around the point and provides great entertainment for kids searching for frogs. We also just completed a kids play deck, built atop a stump, dubbed the Rainbow Lookout.
- If you have a boat, there's a launch just a minute down the road. Please ask first before docking in front of the cabin. It can get rough on the lake, and larger boats may not be suitable.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
For check-in: towels are not included. The water from the taps is drawn from the lake, and thus not suitable for drinking. A watercooler with water is provided on site.
For check-out: you can leave 1 clear plastic bag of garbage and 1 clear blue plastic bag of recycling at the dumpsters at the end of our laneway at Highway 15.
- The swimming is fantastic. However, it is a rock bottom area of the lake where some are slippery and sharp. For that reason, swim shoes are a must. We have a large assortment in the front closet next to the television, but feel free to bring your own.
- There is a limited assortment of life jackets in the front closet. If you’re unsure of sizing, please bring your own. Life jackets are to be worn at all times in the kayak and paddleboart, and everything is used at your own risk.
- For coffee, there is a Keurig machine, so please bring pods.
- The cabin is well-equipped for kids. Please reference the amenities section.
- Common condiments are provided, but we ask that if you finish something, you replace it.
- There is a dedicated cleaner for the cottage. She ensures the cabin is fresh and ready for the next guests.
- "Great cottage in wonderful location. Close to things to do, or simply chill. Will probably re-book next summer. " - "This cottage offers a warm, happy vibe that instantly made our family feel right at home. The setting and views are lovely and will leave us with a lasting impression. It is very clean, comfortable, well-equipped, and in excellent condition. The hosts were very gracious and accommodating. Highly recommended! Lisa & Rick "

Comfortable and modern family cottage with A/C, chef's kitchen, 4 BR, 2.5 Baths, gas fireplace, stunning views, with 200m of shoreline on Bennett Lake, located on 11 acres of forest on a private road. Outdoor amenities include a toddler playground with sandbox; canoe, kayaks, life vests and paddles; expansive deck with outdoor dining; fire pit.
The cottage is typically a summer home for our young family (4, 2, and 0 years old kids) so it is very safe and well-equipped for babies and children with a crib, pack-and-plays, high chairs, baby gates, cupboard locks, toys and games for all ages.
Dog friendly as well, with a fenced in dog run out the kitchen door.
With four bedrooms, two pull-out couches, 2.5 baths, and lots of interior and exterior space, we are happy to host larger groups. Generally, in our hosting experience, two or three families with kids can fit comfortably.
Lakefront access with swim-off dock, rocky but clean shoreline, a variety of boats, and plenty of life jackets and water toys. Please note there is a long stairway down to the water, so not ideal for anyone with mobility issues.
Situated on 11 private acres with access by private road, the location offers total privacy and lots of wilderness to explore on the property. Beautiful and historic Perth is 15 minutes away, with a variety of great options for day trips as well as convenient shopping.
We are typically at our house in Ottawa or traveling when the cottage is available. If you're interested and schedules align, we're always happy to share a coffee on the deck at check in or check out.
We are always available by phone or text to answer questions or respond to emergencies. If anything at the cottage needs our attention, we can be there within an hour or two. As well, please ask for advice on fun kid-friendly trips and activities nearby!
- "We are a cooking and eating clan and the cottage provides everything we needed to produce our culinary happiness. The beds are very comfortable, also a plus. The water is divine, the absolute right temperature. Mother Nature was generous and the weather was great."
