The Location: High Hemlock is located within the Highlands town limits near Harris Lake and behind Mountain Fresh Grocery. This is an area where locals come to walk/jog because it's a on a rare flat loop that is a quick 1/2 mile jaunt to Main Street, where all the shops and restaurants are located.

The Property: High Hemlock is located on a 1/2 acre fenced and wooded lot with a small mossy side yard. Hemlock groves, thick, old growth rhododendrons, and maples add privacy from the street. There are 4 rocking chairs on the front porch that are perfect for bird watching or listening to the peace and quiet or the occasional church bells.

The Cabin: As some of our renters once said, "walking into High Hemlock is like stepping into a Garden & Gun spread." Open the creaky screened door to the subtle smell of firewood and the rhododendrons blooming beside the front porch. The cabin is flooded with natural light. Finishes include all shiplap walls, wide-plank hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings with antique wood beams, local slate tile, and the original 1940's Wolf range in the kitchen.

The Layout: From the front porch, guests enter into a large open space that houses the living room with wood burning fireplace on the right, and the dining room for 6 on the left. Both ensuite bedrooms are off of the main living area (one with a king bed and the other with a queen bed). The galley kitchen is to the far left behind the dining room wall and looks out onto the side mossy yard.

The Area: Highlands, NC is the premier mountain destination in the Southeast. Lined with shopping, dining, museums and galleries, the bustling mountain village centering around Main Street is straight from a Norman Rockwell painting. Previously a summer/fall hotspot, it's quickly becoming a year-round destination. At 4,118 feet, it's one of the few temperate rain forests in North America, bringing botanists and nature lovers from all over the world.

The Details: The living room and both bedrooms have flat screen smart TV's and standard cable channels. We also have wifi. All of the bedding is memory foam- we understand everyone has their preference, but we get lots of compliments on our comfy beds. The kitchen is stocked with general kitchen essentials. There are 30 acres of beautifully maintained property. It is surrounded by beautiful forest which will beckon you to explore. Access trails to the Bartram Trail are only steps from the front gate. This area is heaven for hikers with an abundance of trails that range from easy to difficult.

Bird watchers can also experience great adventures trying to identify the huge array of species in the front yard! There are barred owls, scarlet tanagers, cedar waxwing and worm eating warblers, just to name a few. There is a fully equipped kitchen. (but the gourmet fare in the town of Highlands, NC, is well worth the 30-minute scenic drive.)

There are many local attractions that include zip lining, mountain coasters, gem mining, white water rafting, fly-fishing, hiking, the Great Smoky Mountain Railway, winter tubing, skiing and snowboarding, ice skating, scenic drives, The Blue Ridge Parkway, and live theatre at the Smoky Mountain Performing Arts Center in Franklin and The Highlands Playhouse in Highlands.

I can't think of a better place to be than Highlands, NC. The only thing better is a location with the ability to walk everywhere in town and be above a Wine Shoppe! You will access to our Main St. facing front yard with fire pit, tables and chairs. The end to a perfect evening is having a glass of wine while sitting by the fire pit.

Our apartment was remodeled in 2017. Most of the work was done by my Father (a retired Highlands builder). We wanted to keep the characteristics of Highlands but offer modern amenities. Our property is #1 on the Historical Registry for Highlands.

- "The house was lovely, clean and accomodating, esp. how thoroughly appointed the kitchen was, with great cookware, storage, etc. The fridge was wonderful, and we loved the lighting. We enjoyed sitting on the porch gazing at the mountains. The location of this house was very close to our destinations, groceries, etc. The only difficulty was the heat buildup upstairs (the air conditioning vent in the upstairs closet was inadequate to cool the bedroom and sitting area, and we were uncomfortable using it, including sitting to watch television. We feel this should be remedied or a the very least included in the description of the home on VRBO. Having said that, we enjoyed our stay."

The inside of the house looks brand new from floor to ceiling and had all the comforts of home. You can tell that the owners have worked very hard and spared no expense to restore the home. The house was very easy find and was close to town which was nice, however, it sits right on top of a very busy road. The front porch is so nice and big and I was picturing myself taking the perfect nap there, but the road noise was not to be ignored. No one took a nap on the porch but the traffic would die down in the evenings and it was more peaceful then. In fact, I've never seen so many lightning bugs so that was fun! It was amazing to see! Our cabin is located 12 miles out of Franklin, NC near the Little Tennessee River. We are in easy traveling distance to whitewater rafting, kayaking both flat water and whitewater, fly fishing rivers, gem mining, zip lining, horseback riding, Deep Creek tubing, river tubing , The Appalachian Trail, hiking trails, waterfalls, Smoky Mountain Train excursions, Cherokee attractions/casino, Dollywood, Smoky Mountain National Forest, Blue Ridge Parkway, Elk viewings and Biltmore Estate in Asheville.

The space
Our cabin is on a quiet mountain 12 miles NW of Franklin, NC. Elevation about 2,000 ft. It has 2 bedrooms with queen beds to sleep 4 with 1 bath. There is also a queen sized Lazy-boy sofa bed to sleep 2 more guests. Our favorite feature is our covered back deck with table and chairs for quiet meals while being entertained by the Hummingbirds vying over our two feeders. Plus, it’s so nice to relax on the bench swing or nestled in the hammock swing while reading or just watching the sunset. And nothing beats the coziness of the wood-burning stove for those chilly evenings or mornings. We have lots of family and children’s games and puzzles in the armoire in the dining room and also children and adult books and dvd videos on the living room bookshelves. We also have Starlink wiFi with TV streaming services.

Guest access
Guests have sole access to the whole house with hiking sticks for walks on our mountain or other nearby trails. We also have a picnic basket with reusable dishes, cups and utensils for those outings near our many beautiful rivers and waterfalls. Our favorite place to picnic is at Deep Creek near Bryson City where there are tube rentals for tubing and picnic tables with grills, changing rooms and bathrooms. Bryson City is also where train excursions originate and a must see train museum with a huge working multiple model train layout. Be sure to check our Guidebook for plenty of things to see and do.

Other things to note
We don’t allow pets for the comfort and peace of mind for other guests who have pet allergies. We are also a non-smoking listing.

Because we are 12 miles from Franklin, NC, we message our confirmed guests complete information about local grocery stores so they can pick up groceries before arriving at “Higher Ground”.

Additional note: As further precautions during the pandemic we block off dates between guests to be able to clean more thoroughly. We use Lysol Laundry Sanitizer additive for all towels and washables. We also wash all bed linens including quilts, blankets, and even the mattress covers. We leave a container of alcohol wipes for our guests and liquid hand sanitizer. Of course we wipe down remotes, switches, door knobs and keypads with alcohol wipes too. We spray non-washable fabrics with Lysol disinfectant spray.

The space
The porch is a seductive spot at Love Cove Cabin. All that is audible is nature - and a lot of it. In cooler months you can balance the beauty of the porch with a gas fire in the rock fireplace. In summer months there is a portable AC that cools the cabin along with two large fans in the upstairs loft. The kitchen is fully equipped so you can stay onsite or venture to nearby Franklin or travel a little over an hour to Asheville, which remains in the top 10 towns to visit in the US.
All- wheel drive recommended. Rear- wheel drive will be challenging.

Very Clean and Comfy 1 bedroom duplex type cottage across the road from The Little Tennessee River. High Speed Starlink Internet. Great location near most Smoky Mountain attractions. King and twin bed. Attached game room with pool table. washer and dryer area. Great place for Relocators, workers or Family getaways. Access to putting in a fishing pole. This is a really cool place to hide out at a reasonable price. You can enjoy Franklin and the surrounding areas easily and have a clean, comfy place to come back too. Also good for semi long term to enjoy the area. Traveling nurses, students and workers. High Speed Internet and work from home.

This cottage is like a townhouse/duplex. It is not flush to the other 2 bedroom unit. It has its own parking area and also a open private yard area to sit and view the river.

Welcome to the High County mountain cabin in Franklin N.C. Located 10 min. to town at the foothills of the Smokey Mountains .Dillsboro, Sylvia, Bryson City, Cherokee and Helen G.A. all with in 45min. Cabin has lodge décor with 1 Queen bed, full bath, kitchen and Livingroom . Kids can also camp in the Livingroom with sleeping bags. We provide all house hold items and linens so just bring your bag for a fabulous getaway!

10/20/24 update: closed for the season, thank you to all my 2024 guests! Will reopen for booking in February 2025! Hope to see you then. Decorated and cozy private room with dedicated bathroom. You'll have free range of the spacious downstairs living area, including the kitchen.

Sometimes I will be out of town but when I’m here my dog and I will stay upstairs to give you free range of the downstairs living area. I’ll be available through the AirBnB app and will send you my phone number when booking is confirmed.

Other things to note
I live at the top of a steep driveway on a gravel road. I’ve had no problem getting around in my Honda Civic but if you aren’t used to driving rural mountainous roads you’ll want to take it slow.
