The Maples Inn is located in the heart of the historic village of Bar Harbor. It is a short walk to downtown Main Street, the waterfront, shops, restaurants, galleries, and tours.

Our off-the-grid, solar-powered cottage is nestled within our 18 acres in the town of Washington, Maine. The cottage borders a beautiful stream, is surrounded by tall pines and is several hundred feet away from our home, providing a very private and serene experience.

Guests can wander or snowshoe on our property, relax in the screen house next to the cottage or hang by the accessible fire pit.

We are close to many local lakes and hiking trails and only 30 minutes from Camden & Rockland.

The space
This cozy post and beam cottage overlooks Davis Stream and is super insulated so it stays cool in the summer and heats easily in the winter. The main source of heat is a wood stove with back up diesel heat.

The cottage can accommodate up to 4 guests. There is is a queen bed in the first floor common area and another full bed in the loft accessed by a ladder.

There is a one burner stove with dishes, pots, utensils and silverware provided and a table to eat your meals while viewing the stream. There is also a grill available in warmer months.

Water and wood are provided. In warm weather there is a fresh air shower with hot water and a sink to wash dishes. In freezing temps the bathhouse shower is not available. We will provide water for using the wash basin in the cottage.

The toilet and open air shower are located in the out house right beside the cottage. Please note: the outhouse/bathhouse is not a heated building.

Guest access
Our guests can hike or snow shoe any where on our 18 acre property. We do have several pairs of snow shoes available again upon request with advance notice .

There are two lakes within a five minute drive from our house. We also have kayaks available upon request with advance notice required.

We are located in Washington, Maine - surrounded by beautiful trails and preserves for hiking and snowshoeing and many local lakes and ponds for swimming and kayaking.

We have extra snowshoes and kayaks available if you request in advance.

We are 30 minutes from Camden - home of the Camden Snow Bowl and the US National Toboggan Championships! We are also 30 minutes from Rockport and Rockland - multiple towns filled with great restaurants, Schooner cruises, and year-round adventures.

Children and animals are welcome and encouraged! We ask that there is no smoking any where in the cottage or on the property.

The space
The Bay View Room was once the room from which Captain Charles Burnham Morrill kept an eye on his Casco Bay steamboat anchored nearby. Now the the nicest guest room in my partially restored Victorian home, the Queen size bed and sitting area both offer water views across Harpswell Sound. The room is brightly lit by natural light from large windows, offers two rocking chairs for reading and relaxing and has a small table for in-room dining if desired.

There is ample on-premise parking for my Airbnb guests. The southern end of Orr’s Island is especially scenic within a 5-minute walk to the famous Cribstone Bridge linking Orr’s and Bailey Island. A two-minute walk will bring guests to the equally well known Orr’s Island Candy Store where homemade chocolates, local gifts and hand-dipped ice cream await visitors. Two restaurants are located within 20-minute walking distance as well.

During your stay
As your local host who grew up on Orr’s Island, I take great personal pride in welcoming and interacting with my guests. Guests are invited to share their own stories and respond to the history of Harpswell as a popular destination for writers and artists, from Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Stephen Etnier and Elisabeth Strout.

My home is filled with original art and photography, much of it for sale. When pandemic concerns allow, two first-floor rooms serve as public gallery spaces displaying work by area artists.

The troubling history of racism culminating in the State of Maine’s destruction of a mixed race community on nearby Malaga Island in 1912 is also a topic many guests like to learn about and discuss.

Barker Pond Farm Cabins, built in 2010, feature modern amenities including a full bath and kitchen, outfitted with towels, linens and cookware. Barker Pond Farm Cabins are nestled into the shores of quiet Barker Pond, a 100 hundred acre pond surrounded by forested hills., with 2000 feet of private frontage. Barker Pond Farm is 135 acres of owner-managed forest, pasture and organic gardens, all on a homesteading scale. There are walking trails to explore, fish to catch, boats to paddle, birds to watch, good swimming and plenty of trails and roads to bike. A pond side fire pit is a great place to end the day with stories and songs.
Winter is a great time to be here on Barker Pond as well! We have cross country and snowshoe trails, ice fishing and skating, all weather dependent, of course. You can check out Barker Pond Farm Cabins on FB to get the latest weather conditions.
