- "We decided on a spur of the moment to spend a night in Detroit just before Christmas and it is a bit late but I totally wanted to leave a review. We LOVED our stay at the Aleo which is just next door and connected to The Shepard. We felt like we were in an extension of the beautiful art gallery which is within a former church, Every room was so thoughtfully designed and contained multiple pieces of art. The bedroom we stayed in had a view of the sculptures on the property and a very nice deck. The king sized bed was so comfy with crisp linen sheets. We had access to sitting rooms, full use of the kitchen, complimentary snacks and drinks (liquor was on an honor system basis). The grounds contained multiple sitting areas. We definitely intend to return when the weather warms up to further explore the nearby area and revisit The Shepard. Aleo will be a perfect homebase given the proximity to The Dequindre Cut bike path which takes you right down to the Riverwalk."

A cozy little getaway for the adventurous individual or couple at a location that is beautiful year round. The property is surrounded by 365 acres of state and MNA sanctuary lands with 700 feet of private frontage.

Excellent trout fishing, kayaking, tubing, biking, XC skiing, snow shoeing and hiking right out the back door. If you want to truly get away from the pink skies and road noise and want the "up north" experience but not stay at a crummy resort or noisy lake, this is the place for you.

The space
The guest house is a secluded space twelve feet into the treetops with private outdoor stairs to a 6x10 foot deck with small table, chairs and entrance. The studio is a spacious 20x24 foot room with a large sidewall dormer and large windows/sliding glass door on the gable ends.

The PRIMARY HEAT is a WOOD STOVE which is easy to manage, firewood is providedg. The bathroom is small but quite functional with a 32x32" shower with 6' shower head. There is a full size bed (new mattress 8/20) and a sofa. The kitchenette has a 2 burner electric hotplate, toaster oven, small 1.7 cubic foot refrigerator, press pot for coffee maker, an electric percolator, kettle and plates/bowls/cups/utensils service for three along with basic kitchen tools. You can cook on that wood stove too! There is an additional electric space heater and a circulating fan to cover whatever range of temperatures the season has to offer. Extra blankets are also provided for the bed.

Please, no trailers, ORVs or snowmobiles. There is not enough room at the end of the 300’ driveway for more than 2 extra vehicles.

I must note, that while internet does indeed exist here, the whole property is run off a grandfathered 3G data plan. Expect roughly 3x dial up speeds if that’s important to you.

AT&T and Verizon are the only reliable mobile networks up here so if you have an urban carrier you may not (and most likely won't) have any service! This is true of all Northern rural Michigan, not just here.

The guest house is above one of the studio buildings for Deep Wood Press where fine books have been made for the past 33 years. Here we cast metal type, engrave copper, make ink, print letterpress and intaglio, illustrate and bind very limited edition books.

Additional arrangements can be made for artists or the curious wishing to use the bindery or intaglio and letterpress facilities. This must be worked out in advance with your host and at an additional cost. Chad has taught all levels of printmaking and book binding in the US and Europe and can tailor any instruction or facility use to your needs. Remember - this is up 17 outdoor stairs and we can get impressive overnight snows sometimes. The bathroom and kitchenette are small and simple. Primary heat is a WOOD STOVE. This place is geared toward an active couple wanting to experience comfortable seclusion in the north woods.

I use unscented laundry detergent/softener and typically use Murphey's Soap for cleaning and mopping other areas between every guest stay for those of you sensitive to such things.

The water from the tap is of much higher quality than anything you buy in plastic. I have the well tested annually.

The Garthe Guest House is a two story home with the private guest rooms on the second floor. You will enter the home through the porch on the front of the house. We provide a light breakfast for guests who book rooms from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Each morning between 7a-8a the host will place items on the table and on the top shelf of the refrigerator for all guests to share. The continental style breakfast items may include: yogurt, granola, seasonal fruit, orange juice, hard boiled eggs, pastries or quick breads/muffins, quiche, breakfast casseroles. Not all items will be available every day. We can not accommodate special dietary needs. For guests renting the entire upstairs which includes all three private rooms, breakfast will not be provided.

The private kitchen includes: Fridge/freezer, stove/oven, microwave, sink, dishes, utensils, bakeware, & cookware. This Michigan themed studio is on the main level of the Hop & Vine Inn. It includes a TV with Hulu.

All of the Hop & Vine Inn’s units have their own bathroom, TV, AC & heat, mini-fridge, fan, and coffee maker.

***TIP*** The weekends are great around all the Michigan beach towns, but a little unknown tip is to vacation here on the WEEKDAYS to avoid the crowds! Summer weekdays are never boring in Saugatuck, Douglas, & Fennville. FennValley Vineyards hosts family-friendly free live music every Thursday evening, as does Virtue Cider, and the Felt Mansion! The beaches have more parking & more room to spread out. The restaurants have the same incredible food, but less wait time. Boat & sand dune tours have more availability, so you can choose the perfect time to go.

The space
The Hemingway Suite has 2 bedrooms and is a unique recently renovated space. Bathrooms is classically appointed with a soaking tub but also doubles as a shower. Spacious space for all sorts of groups. King bed in the large main room.
